TREMONT TAKE ROBERT N. PETROCCI MEMORIAL
ELBRIDGE, NY..9/6/99....Kenny Tremont, from West Sand Lake, NY, added his first ever victory in the Robert N. Petrocci Memorial at Rolling Wheels Raceway on Labor Day evening. Sportsman Rookie of the Year candidate, Justin Haers, took top honors in the 20-lap Sportsman feature, while Phil Sherman won the special 15-lap Pro- Stock main event. The New York State Fair Championship winner, Eddie Marshall led the pack down to take the green in Brett Hearn's back up TEO car. Marshall was not as successful as he wanted to be, pulling the car into the infield grass on lap seven. On the speedway Billy Decker, the second place finisher in Syracuse during the afternoon, picked up the lead at the drop of the green with Steve paine in tow. The first yellow flew on lap three when Tim Fuller pulled the B&F General Machine number M1 high on the backstretch with a flat tire. As all laps were counting, Fuller had little opportunity to pit without losing a lap. At the front of the field Decker was having his hands full with Tremont, running second. On lap 17, Tremont was able to take the lead from Decker. Paine, now running third was doing battle with Pat Ward. Paine's car was just strong enough to maintain the position.
A second yellow flew on lap 26 when Tom Sears Jr. looped his car in the first turn, losing a lap to the leaders. Tremont was able to stretch his lead to a full straight away on the restart, as Paine had again passed Decker for second. Lapped traffic became a factor after lap 40 as the leaders sometimes found themselves in packs of lapped cars. Tremont flew home the winner, with six lapped cars between himself and Paine in second. Alan Johnson moved up in the closing laps to take third. A.J. Romano brought his number 16 in fourth, with Brett Hearn rounding out the top five finishers. The 20-lap sportsman feature was run last on the program due to threatening weather forecasts concerning the advance of Hurricane Dennis. By midnight the rain was falling. Justin Haers battles Jim Spano for the lead early in the race, with Justin coming out ahead on lap 4 after Spano slide off the concrete front stretch wall. Spano continued on, but faded back to fifth at the finish. Jimmy Johnson was able to obtain second on lap 14. Haers flew home to dance on the roof of his car in victory lane. Johnson came home in second followed by Chris Shultz, Spano and Steve Hall. The 12-lap Pro-stock main proved again to be one of the most competitive divisions on DIRT. Tom Barron claimed the lead at the drop of the green flag. It didn't take racing buddy Randy Miller to pass Barron for the lead on lap five after a restart. Miller looked to be in solid until lap 13 when Phil Sherman grabbed the lead from Miller. Sherman held on to claim the victory, his first ever at Rolling Wheels Raceway. Randy Miller finished second followed by Barron, Jim McGuigan and Jeff Patrick.
Racing continues at the "fast track". Saturday, September 25 and 26 mark the annual Wheels Weekend featuring Pro-Stocks, Enduros and 358-Modifieds on Saturday and the big blocks and Sportsman running on that Sunday. Race time on Saturday, September 25 will be at 3 p.m., while the Sunday show kicks off at 1 p.m. sharp. Rolling Wheels Raceway is located just halfway between Auburn and Elbridge on Route 5.
