KENNY TREMONT TOPS ROLLING WHEELS 200
ELBRIDGE, NY.10/3/98..Kenny Tremont from West Sand Lake, NY,
cruised home to victory in the Paine Motorsports 200 run last
Saturday at Rolling Wheels Raceway. Also scoring a delayed
feature victory in the DIRT Sportsman ranks was Jim Spano, who
dominated the 30-lap Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels-Pennzoil-
SavOn Mr. DIRT Sportsman main event.
The 200-lap DIRT Modified feature started with Tremont and
Pat Ward bringing the 34 car field down to get the green flag.
Tremont would lead the first 35 laps when he took the opportunity
to pit under a yellow caused when Bob McCreadie stalled on the
speedway in the fourth turn. McCreadie's incident was the second
yellow of the race. The first came on lap 10, when Tony Pepicelli
slowed on the speedway.
Bobby Varin now found himself the leader with Tim Fuller
running second and Frank Cozze third. The yellow flew for a third
time when Dave Camara slowed on the track on lap 48. Varin pitted
under this yellow leaving Frank Cozze to assume the lead on lap
52, but not before Tim Fuller recorded being in the lead on laps
50 and 51.
The restart saw cars running in bunches. Then on lap 57
Scott Schrader saw his car run over, bending the right front
wheel completely under the axle. Cozze looked to not want to pit
until after the halfway marker. Running from the rear of the
field was Tremont, who passed Cozze for the lead on lap 79.
At the halfway point in the race it was Tremont running in
the lead followed by Danny Johnson, Cozze, Alan Johnson, Brett
Hearn and Jack Johnson.
A yellow on lap 109 saw Cozze finally pit and set up the
long run to the finish. Tremont was able to cruise away at his
leisure, with Danny Johnson eventually ending up in a torrid
battle to hold second from Brett Hearn. Twenty-three cars
remained on the speedway at this time.
The yellow flew on lap 146 when eighth place runner, Gary
Tomkins had a right rear tire go flat. He pitted and returned,
without losing a lap. Tremont continued as the leader followed by
Johnson, Hearn and Alan Johnson.
With 20 laps remaining fuel looked to be a concern, as the
majority of the race was run under green flag conditions. Cozze
was the first to realize fuel problems. On lap 186 he headed
pitside for more Sunoco, losing two laps in the process. Alan
Johnson pitted on lap 189 for fuel. Danny Johnson was not as
lucky, losing a lap on fueling. As the final few circuits
unravelled Gary Tomkins, Maynard Forrette and Ronnie Johnson also
ran short on fuel.
At the line it was Tremont taking the $10,000 win, followed
by Hearn, Jack Johnson, Steve Paine, and Jimmy Horton. Tremont
led 157 of the 200 laps, which saw four different drivers take a
turn at the head of the field.
In sportsman action, the 30-lapper was green flagged only to
see the yellow fly immediately when four cars tangled going into
the first turn. Chris Shultz would eventually lead the first two
laps before Jim Spano darted into the front spot. Spano then
dominated the field pulling out a full straight away advantage
over second place Shultz. Howie Albrecht passed Alton Palmer on
lap 10 to take third. Palmer finished fourth followed by Pete
Cosco in fifth. Five yellows slowed the race, all for minor
incidents.
This event had to be rescheduled from the week before after
rains fell on Sunday, September 27. Track points will end with
Sunday's running of the Robert N. Petrocci Memorial 75, after the
make up Labor Day races run on the mile at the New York State
Fairgrounds during the afternoon.
