DECKER TOPS CAYUGA COUNTY, ON HOT STREAK!!!
WEEDSPORT, NY.8/23/98..Billy Decker, from Unadilla, NY, is on a hot
streak, winning four races in the last four nights. Last Sunday
he picked up the 35-lap victory at the Cayuga County Fair
Speedway. Winning in the sportsman division was Tim Sears. Ron
Hawker took top honors in the enduro feature.
Tim Burnett, running a 358-modified, took command of the race
at the drop of the green. Burnett was able to first Mike Ward and
Jimmy Phelps at bay for seven laps. On that circuit Phelps took
the lead from Burnett.
The first of just three yellow flags was thrown on lap 13
after Chuck Bower looped his mount and made contact with the
fourth turn Jersey Barriers. His car was towed to the pit area,
where it would later return to the fray some 17 laps down.
Darryl Ruggles looped his car in the first and second turns
on lap 15 to bring out the yellow a second time. Just four laps
later Bob McCreadie slowed going down the back stretch, while
running in seventh, and dropped out of the race.
On lap 25 Decker used the same maneuver he had the night
before at Canandaigua Speedway. He drifted higher then the lead
two cars through turns three and four. This higher grove provided
the momentum to pass both lead cars in one fell swoop.
Decker was now trying to just run away and hide from the
rest of the pack. Jimmy Phelps held second followed by Bobby
Varin, Tom Sears Jr. and Tim Fuller.
The yellow was displayed just one more time when on lap 29
the number 15 of Bob Melone slowed on the track.
At the finish it was Decker followed by Phelps, Varin,
Fuller and Alan Johnson.
The 20-lap sportsman feature saw Tim Sears pass Ryan Baye
for the lead on lap six. Sears simply cruised home the winning,
only being slowed by two cautions, both coming on lap 17.
Following Sears across the finish line were Baye, Greg
Doust, Rick Miller and Mike Button. A major bumping incident on
the speedway during the lap 16 restart saw Rich Swarthout try to
slam into the Jim Spano machine on the front stretch after the
checkers. Spano remarkably did the correct thing and stayed
inside his car. Both drivers were fined their earning for this
event.
This Sunday racing continues at the Cayuga County Fair
Speedway with the Dwarf cars joining the modifieds, sportsman and
enduro divisions. Race time will be at 7 p.m..
