MCCREADIE BREAKS WINLESS STREAK AT BREWERTON
BREWERTON, NY..7/10/98.."Barefoot" Bob McCreadie had not visited victory lane at Brewerton Speedway since the early part of May, but his winless streak at the "D-Shaped DIRT Demon" is now history as he took the win Friday night. Other winners included Sean Lias in a photo finish for the IMCA Modified honors, Lloyd Hinton in the 4 Cylinders, and Troy Van Allen continued to be unbeatable in the Dwarf cars.
McCreadie started ninth in the field for the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature and made his presence known early, quickly moving into the top five. Point leader Alan Johnson and Pat Ward tangled with Bill Gill on lap 3, which brought out the first caution flag. Billy Decker was moving up from his fifteenth starting spot as well. Danny Johnson was also involved in an early race tangle, and joined brother Alan and Ward in making a charge from the rear.
McCreadie got the lead on lap 9 and tried to get some distance between himself and the rest of the field, but Decker caught him, and actually passed McCreadie for the lead on a lap 16 restart. McCreadie was back up front two laps later as they diced side by side around the track. Scott Prentice was also strong, holding third until late in the race when Alan Johnson slipped under him. Alan tried to stay with the leaders, but fell back a bit at the finish. It was the third win for "Barefoot": at Brewerton for 1998, with Decker, Alan, Prentice, and Danny Johnson rounding out the top five. Heats were won by Alan, Decker, and Tim Fuller.
In the IMCA Modifieds, Rob Keller and Dick Weiland battled for the lead in the first half of the feature, but were soon overtaken by Sean Lias after several laps of swapping lanes and positions. Similar to the Modified feature was George Catanzano's charge from the last row up through the field into the top five late in the race.
A yellow with two to go set the stage for a shootout, with Weiland pulling alongside Lias as they came down to the checkered flag. Lias won the drag race off turn four by less than a foot to earn the win over Weiland, with Keller third. Frank Caprara Jr. and Catanzano rounded out the top five. Heat wins went to Lias and Keller, with Lias also grabbing the Magee Trailer Sales Dash for Cash.
The 4 Cylinder feature event was another battle between Jim Olin and Lloyd Hinton, who have been trading wins all season long. They battled with early leader Harvey Calkins three wide around the track until Hinton finally emerged on top. Ken Klinkowsky was also in the hunt, and barely avoided a spinning Olin late in the race to move into third. Hinton fended off one more challenge from Ed Granoski to take the win with Klinkowsky showing in third. Harvey Calkins and Chuck Powelczyk rounded out the top five, with heat wins going to Klinkowsky, Olin, and Hinton.
The Dwarf car feature was a lesson in heavy traffic driving for Troy Van Allen. Starting deep in the pack, Van Allen took advantage of the smooth racing surface to make four and even five wide passes as he came up to the front, bringing Dan Boyce with him.Boyce spun just past halfway and later retired with a problem. Eddie Bell held second for most of the race until he too ran into trouble just three laps from the finish. Jim Gray moved into second at the finish, followed by Pat Pontello, Mark Weigelt, and Darren Forbes. Dwarf car heat wins went to Bell, Boyce, and Forbes.
In other racing action, Ryan Phelps won the Youth Dwarf main event, and Women On Wheels races were won by Kim Younglove, Lori Sponable, and Jessica Smith.
Next Friday night the Supermodified Stars on DIRT challenge race will take place along with a regular show of DIRT Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, 4 Cylinders and Dwarf cars. Gates open at 5:30pm and racing starts at 7:30pm.
