VETERANS AND ROOKIES SHARE FEATURE SPOTLIGHT AT BREWERTON SPEEDWAY

BREWERTON, NY.....A mix of veterans and rookies shared the spotlight Friday night at

Brewerton Speedway as Alan Johnson scored his 266th career big block win in the DIRT

Modifieds, Troy Van Allen swept the double bill for the Dwarf cars, Rick Angle scored h!

is first win in the 4 Cylinders, and Sean Lias and rookie Frank Caprara Jr. grabbed his first

career IMCA Modified win in only his third IMCA race.

Alan and Jack Johnson led the field down to the drop of the green flag in the DIRT Modified

35-lap feature event, with Jack leading the first lap. Alan took the lead on lap two and

Jack began to develop a push in his FX Caprara car. The yellow flew quickl!

y as Danny Johnson and Chuck Bower tangled in turn four. Both drivers were able to continue.

The next 24 laps were green flag racing, with Danny Johnson charging from the rear, passing

the likes of Bob McCreadie and Billy Decker as he tore through the field. Up front, Alan

Johnson stretched his lead and held it through traffic while Jack Johnson f!

ought his ill-handling car. While Vic Coffey and Chuck Hebing fought for position behind the

lead duo, Danny caught them and passed them, moving into the top three with less than ten

laps to go.

A lap 26 yellow bunched the field, and on the restart, Danny muscled his way past Jack into

the runnerup slot. Alan again used traffic to his advantage, but had one more yellow in his

sights. That set up a restart with four to go. Danny did get close on !

a couple of occasions, but Alan had too much for his brother and scored his first win of the

year at Brewerton. Danny was second with Billy Decker coming home third, passing Jack

Johnson in the final laps. Coffey crashed in turn four coming down for the c!

heckers and never crossed the finish line. Bob McCreadie came home fifth with Hebing, Pat

Ward, Bob Varin, Bill Abold, and Tim Fuller completing the top ten.

Modified heats were won by Danny Johnson, Pat Ward, and Jack Johnson.

The first of two IMCA Modified features was a battle between two strong campaigners as George

Cantanzano and Sean Lias dueled for the top spot for the first half of the 20 lapper. On a

restart at the halfway point, Lias slipped under Cantanzano to take the!

lead and stretched it to the finish, despite having the car too loose in its handling.

Cantanzano held on for second, with Neil Edgar, Craig Simmons, and Frank Caprara Jr. rounding

out the top five.

In the second IMCA feature of the night, Brent Matzel held the early lead until he was caught

up in a crash on lap 5. Frank Caprara Jr, a sixteen year old former go kart racer in his

first year of IMCA competition, inherited the lead, but had first feature!

winner Lias, Cantanzano, and Jim Evans knocking at the door. For the final 15 laps Lias

tried every way to pass Caprara, but the young lion held the inside lane and prevented Lias

from making a run at him.

At the checkers, Caprara scored his first feature win to go along with a heat win he notched

earlier in the evening. Lias was second, with Evans and Ron O'Neil slipping past Cantanzano

in the final circuts. IMCA Modified heats were won by Caprara, Lias, a!

nd Carmen Vona.

The two Dwarf car feature events centered around the duels between Dan Boyce and defending

track champion Troy Van Allen. In the first feature, Boyce grabbed the lead early while Van

Allen stormed his way through the pack after fighting hard with Greg Furl!

ong, Jim Gray, and "Fast" Eddie Bell. Van Allen and Boyce touched slightly on the

frontstretch on lap 10, with Boyce making the save, but losing the lead to Van Allen. Van

Allen stretched it out to score the win in the first feature over Boyce, Bell, Pat !

Pontello, and Mark Weigelt.

In the second feature, Boyce again was the front runner early after passing pole sitter Frank

Doll Jr. for the lead. Bell was in the hunt until a mishap sent him to the rear. He would

come charging back for a top five finish. The race saw a red flag wit!

h just a couple of laps to go when Greg Furlong made contact with a slower car and did a

three-quarter endover, with his car coming to rest on the back deck, nose pointed at the sky.

Furlong was not injured in the crash. On the ensuing restart, Boyce slow!

ed with a flat right rear tire, allowing Van Allen to inherit the lead and a sweep of the

night's features. Frank Doll Jr. held on to second over Bell, with Bill Teleska and Kevin

Doll rounding out the top five finishers. Dwarf car heats were won by Scott!

Nash, Jim Coher, and Frank Doll Jr.

The 4 Cylinder Super Stock feature was a barnburner that saw Chuck Powelcyzk and Ray

Chittenden fighting for the lead until Rick Angle, in his first Brewerton appearance of 1998,

slipped past them to take the lead. As Angle stretched out his advantage, Ken!

Klinkowsky and Ed Granoski joined Chittenden and Powelcyzk to battle for position with a

high-flying Todd Williamson.

At the checkers, Angle had the nod over Powelcyzk, Chittenden, Klinkowsky, and Williamson.

Heats were won by Lloyd Hinton and Chittenden.

In other racing activities, Darryl Sanders was the 1-on-1 Spectator race winners, and Women

on Wheels events went to Carrie Shuba, Lesa Angle, and Shelly O'Neil.

Next Friday night is Food Bank night at Brewerton Speedway, with a dollar off adult admission

with a canned food donation. Gates will open at 5:30 with racing starting at 7:30.
