TREMONT AND MARSHALL SPLIT DOUBLE HEADER
WEST LEBANON, NY- Kenny Tremont won the delayed 30-lap
feature from last week. Eddie Marshall picked up his
first win of the season in the second 30-lap feature.
Bobby Hackel came home with the 20-lap sportsman win.
Todd Goldstein was the winner in the Street Stocks.
The first modified feature saw a massive pileup
on the intial green flag. The front two cars got
together and the field had nowhere to go. Most of the
field was involved, including Brett Hearn. Many of the
drivers were able to continue. Glenn Grossjung would
take the lead on the restart. Hearn was able to continue
after going pitside for repairs. He was up to fifth by
lap one. A restart on lap four allowed Hearn to take
third. Meanwhile, Grossjung continued to lead up front
with Donnie Ackner second. Tremont would grab the lead
going into turn three on a lap four restart. Hearn was
up to second by lap five. Dickie Larkin moved up to
fifth by lap six. Tremont and Hearn would breakaway
from the pack. Tremont would run into lapped traffic
by lap nine. The field was slowed by yellow on lap
eleven. Ackner would take third and Larkin would take
fourth on the restart. Larkin would grab third after a
lap 14 restart. Tremont would hold only a three car
advantage over Hearn on lap 16. He would open up to a
ten car length lead by lap 20. A yellow on lap 21
bunched up the field once again. Hearn would try and
pass Tremont, but could not prevail. Tremont was able
to hold off Hearn for the remainder of the event and
came home with his second win of the year. Hearn came
home second, Larkin third, Ackner fourth, and Guy
Sheldon fifth.
The second modified feature started out quite
the same as the first. A pileup occured in turn one on
the intial green. There were not as many cars involved
though. Eddie Marshall rocketed out to the lead early,
with Donnie Corellis in close pursuit. Hearn was up to
seventh by lap one, after starting 15th. Mike Benson and
Rich Ricci would battle for the fifth spot on lap three.
Hearn was up to sixth by lap three as well. Marshall
looked like the man to beat, opening up almost a half
straightaway lead by lap four. Hearn would battle Garry
Waters for the fourth spot on lap six. Hearn would take
it from Waters on lap nine. Marshall would start to run
into some slower cars by lap nine as he set a torrid
pace out front. He would encounter heavy traffic on lap
11. Hearn would grab third on lap 11. Hearn would then
try to pass the second place car of Corellis. He would
complete the pass on lap 15. Sheldon had another good
run going, he was up to fifth by lap 17.
Hearn would see his shot of winning deflate on
lap 18, as his right rear tire went flat. Mike Benson
and Mike King would battle for fourth on lap 19. A
yellow on lap 20 allowed Corellis to catch up to
Marshall. Corellis would try to pass Marshall on the
restart, but could not make the pass. Chris Moore had a
good run going. He was involved in an early race
incident and had worked his way back to fifth by lap 22.
Sheldon had worked his way up to third and would battle
Corellis for second.
Moore would take fourth on lap 24 and would run
the rest of the race trying to get by Sheldon. Marshall
continued to dominate up front and cruised home for his
first win of the season. The win was worth an extra
three thousand dollars for Marshall. Corellis finished
second, Sheldon third, Moore fourth and Benson fifth.
Denny Young was the early race leader in the
20-lap sportsman feature. Bobby Hackel was up to second
early on also. Chris Kokosa would take fifth by lap two.
Hackel would take the lead on a lap three restart. Jeff
Cassidy would get turned around while running fourth,
bringing out a caution. Kokosa would take second on the
restart. George Marcus was up to fifth on lap 11. Art
Collins would get some pressure from Bobby Chalmers for
the third spot on lap 12.
Hackel would have a ten car advantage by lap 13.
Roy Bridge and Danny Ody would battle for seventh on lap
14. Bridge would take the spot. Hackel would run into
some traffic by lap 15, this allowed Kokosa to close
ground. Marcus would grab fourth on a lap 17 restart.
Kokosa would try and battle Hackel for the lead, but
Hackel was strong to the challenge. Colins was third,
Marcus fourth, and Chalmers fifth.
Todd Golstein would grab the lead on lap seven
on the 20-lap street stock feature and never look back.
Rich Crane was up to second by lap nine. Jim Lagenback
was seventh, Adam Haas was eighth, and Lorne Browe was
ninth by lap nine. Crane and Ed Bachand would run for
second on lap ten.
Lagenback was up to fifth by lap 13. Meanwhile
Goldstein continued to lead up front. Lagenback and
Crane would run for fourth. Goldstein would open a half
straightaway adavantage by lap 18. Lagenback would break
on the final lap as Goldstein came home with the win.
This was the final night of points for the 1997
season. Brett Hearn was the modified champion. George
Marcus was the sportsman champ. The street stocks still
have several weeks remaining in the season. The next
race will be the big Kings 200 weekend on Sept 6th and
7th.
