Mike Romano and Jeff Trombley Share Modified Victories at Fonda

8/17/97.....Mike Romano won the second modified feature to record

his first Saturday night win at the New Fonda this season.

Romano's consistent finishes all season gave him the edge on runner up

Jack Johnson of Duanesburg in the battle for the track title. Johnson came up

short on his quest for his 12th track title at the "Track of Champions."

At the green for the first modified feature it was the #82 of Brian Purdy

and the #1Z of Ray Zemken to the line first. In turn two Purdy and Zemken

made contact allowing the #13 of Frank Hoard to scoot by on the outside for

the lead. The yellow flew for the Craig Boehler, John Kollar and Seth Gano

who scattered on the backstretch, as the field came around to record the first

lap.

As the feature unfolded Jeff Trombley looked the strongest in Mike

Romano's back up car. Starting seventh, Trombley took the lead from Hoard on

lap fourteen and pulled away from the field for the win. Trombley was

followed across the line by Frank Hoard, Jack Johnson, Mike Romano and Dave

Camara to round out the top five.

Mike Romano picked up his first Saturday night win of the season in the

second modified feature. After inverting the top four (determined by a draw

after the first feature) the green flag fell and Mike Romano and Jack Johnson

sat side by side on the front row and that is the way they went to the line.

Jeff Trombley once again became a factor early on in the Romano back up car as

he quickly began to challenge the front runners.

On lap eight the only yellow of the event, flew for the #50J of Craig

Boehler when he spun and stopped on the inside of turn four. This closed up

the field and put the #26 of Dave Camara in the hunt to challenge the top

running group of cars.

The top two of Romano and Johnson never changed as they battled side by

side for the remaining laps. Romano took the win followed by Johnson, Camara,

Trombley and Mike Ciaravino to complete the top five.

Modified "B" Feature winner was A. J. Romano in the Bobar #12B.

Winner of the $1000 "Dash for Cash" sponsored by Dutchess Overhead Doors was

Jack Johnson.

After a whole year of side by side battles and swapping of the top spot

in points between Alton Palmer and Brian Borst, Alton Palmer of Howes Cave, NY

sits as the 1997 Track Champion in the sportsman division at the New Fonda

Speedway.

Jim Senzio of Gloversville, NY was the winner of the first sportsman

feature to record his second ever win at Fonda in the sportsman division.

Three cautions slowed the action in the first sportsman feature but the

#44 of Senzio held the lead with challenges from Drew Fallis and Alton Palmer

from green to checker.

Defending track champion, Alton Palmer came from 15th starting spot to

finish third giving him a jump on the points as the #69 of Brian Borst had to

make a trip to the pits on lap seven. Borst finished in the eighth position

setting up still another potential battle between the two rivals, to be played

out in the next 15 lap sportsman feature. . Senzio was followed by Fallis,

Palmer, McAuliffe and Holt.

The second sportsman feature was won by Alton Palmer, who came from third

starting spot to take the lead from Drew Fallis who was on the point from the

first lap.

John McAuliffe moved into the runner up spot on lap two and on lap nine

the #76 of Palmer took over the second place position from McAuliffe and set

his sights on the front runner Fallis. Fallis had problems making his way

around the lap car of Gray Greco on lap eight giving Palmer the opportunity to

moved around Fallis for the lead. Palmer held the lead for the remaining laps

to record his 52nd win at Fonda. Borst finished in the seventh position

giving him the runner up spot in points once again this year. Palmer was

followed by McAuliffe, Holt, Senzio and Fallis.

Sportsman "B" Main was a first ever win for Nick Nichols. The Sportsman "Dash

for Cash" $500 from the Buckhorn Restaurant went to Alton Palmer.

Kenny Martin had the most wins in the street stock division at the New

Fonda Speedway this season and when all was said and done in this highly

competitive class Martin once again sits as the Street Stock Track Champion at

the New Fonda Speedway for the second year in a row. Martin did not win either

of the two street stock features on Saturday but his finish gave him his

second Fonda point title.

The first street stock feature was won by Steve Brownell of Eagle Bridge,

NY. giving him his first every win at Fonda. Brownell challenged the #14 of

Ram Kowalczyk who took the lead on lap three and jumped out front. Brownell

stayed close and when Kowalczyk spun in turn four on lap 14 Brownell inherited

the lead and never looked back where he would have seen the #26 of Phlan Hart

following close behind. Brownell was followed by Hart, Martin, Myers, and

Burton to round out the five.

The second street stock feature win went to Kenny Gates of West Winfield,

NY giving Gates his second win of the season at Fonda.

Gates led from the green with the only caution in the event coming for

the heavily smoking #17V of Dave Viall. The #35 fought off strong challenges

from the #26A of Burton and the #93 Martin the #26 of Hart and the #218 of

Welch who battled for position behind him. Gates came to the checker followed

by Hart, Burton, Martin, and Welch.

The Street Stock "B" Main win went to Jeff Jones and the "Dash of Cash" winner

was Kenny Martin who picked up $250 from Michelob.

The Hobby Stock division was started in July and Steve Burega came to

Fonda with his sharp looking #26 hobby stock machine. Each week the

competition was stronger and stronger for Steve but on this last night of

points he came to the track with enough points for the title. To top off his

night Burega picked up the win in the hobby division to increase his win

streak to seven on the season.

Enduro winner was: Dave Horning, Sr.
