TERRY HOUGH BECOMES THREE TIME WINNER AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE,N.Y...8/15/97...Terry Hough, out of Gang Mills,N.Y., became
the first three time winner in the 358 Modifieds last Friday
night at the Black Rock Speedway. In Super-Stock competition,
Dale Welty put the Spencer's Big M 1-2-3 in victory lane for the
6th time this year, and inched ever closer to his first
championship. Brian Hilliard picked up his second feature win in
the Pro-Stocks, and Brian Austin claimed the win in the 4 Cyl.
Stock division.
It was another rainy night at "The Rock" last Friday night,
but once again the persistence of promoters Lin Hough and Sam
Kelly won out over Mother Nature. This makes the 13th time in 18
weeks these guys have had to deal with inclement weather. Terry
Hough stood in victory lane after 25 laps of racing in the 358
Modifieds. It was a hard fought win for the driver out of Gang
Mills,N.Y. He started the event in the 14th position, and never
took the lead until the 19th lap. Scott Benedict, and Billy
Borden lead this classy field to Scott Lyon's green flag, and
quickly pulled out away from the rest of the field, but they were
quickly joined by the high flying "Jungle" Jim Schuyler. This
high flying trio had a race of their own, while the rest of the
field battled to catch them. Terry Hough was, however on his way
up through the field, using the cushion to his advantage. He had
moved up to fifth by lap 12. This lap also saw a caution period,
as Chuck Kennison's 9X stopped in the fourth turn, and his race
was over early. On the ensuing re-start, Scott Benedict and Billy
Borden continued to run out in front, but Hough had worked his
way up to third, and Billy Borden dropped off the pace to fifth.
Two laps later, Schuyler made contact with Scott Benedict and he
went sliding through the infield in turn three. He recovered to
finish 14th, Schuyler would pay for his indiscretion later in the
event. For now, Schuyler was out in front, and Terry Hough was
parked on his back bumper. These two raced hard for the next
several laps, but on lap 19 Hough took over the top spot, and
began to pull away. With one lap to go, the yellow lights came
on, as Chris Lewis tagged the back stretch wall. Just prior to
the re-start, Schuyler was told to go to the rear of the field
for his bumping incident with Benedict. He decided not to
continue, and was pushed to the pits. On the re-start on lap 24,
Billy VanPelt lined up in second place, but when the green was
waved, Hough took off and held off Billy for his third win,
VanPelt was second, third went to Steve Hartman, Don Lawson was
fourth, and rounding out the top five was Charlie Donk. Heat
winners were, Dave Machuga, Jim Schuyler, Terry Hough, and Walt
Mitchell.
In the Big Flats Manufactured Housing feature for the
Modifieds, Stacy Jackson jumped out to the early lead, and when
on for the win. Marty Conlon finished second, third was George
Rushlow, and the fourth and final qualifying position went to Tim
Sebring.
Dale Welty continued his march to the Championship in the
Super-Stock division as he pulled down his sixth win of the
season. He started 15th on the field, and took the lead on lap
12. Once Welty got out in front he had things his own way, and
streaked across the line with the checkered flag flying. Second
at the line was, third generation driver, Tony Harris, third
place was, Kevin Chilson, fourth went to, Gene Balmer, and
rounding out the top five was, Dave Fultz. Earl Harp, who is
chasing Welty for the championship finished eighth, so Welty was
able to pad his point lead, with just two point shows left on the
schedule. Heats in the division went to, Bob Buono, Jeremy
Potrzebowski, and Dale Welty. The consi was won by, Rob Conklin.
Brian Hilliard picked up his second win of the season in the
rough and tumble Pro-Stock division. The bumping and banging in
this began early and continued right up to the checkered flag.
Jeff Baroody jumped out to the early but he had company right
there with him in the person of Jason Clugstone. These two
started rubbin' and trading paint as they battled for the lead.
But while these two seemed preoccupied in wrecking each other,
Brian Hilliard was up in the high groove with his right rear
digging in the cushion and had worked his way into the third
spot, from ninth on the grid. Hilliard grabbed the second spot at
the half-way point in the event. On lap 15, Hilliard took
the lead when Baroody began dropping back in his 3B. Mike VanDyke
to advantage of all of this and grabbed off the runner-up spot.
Lap 16 saw Jason Clugstone and Mike Brown get together in the
back straight. As the checkers were flying it was Hilliard
across the line first for his second win of the season, but
farther back in the field at the checkers, Jeff Baroody made
contact with Eric VanSkiver, and VanSkivers 22 hit the front
stretch wall and rolled onto its roof. Then the engine
compartment caught fire. VanSkiver got out unhurt, and the fire
was quickly put out. The 22 had to cradled off the track.
Finishing second was Mike VanDyke after a great run, third was,
Chris McCann, fourth went to, Darren Hadley, and rounding out the
top five was, Steve Clark. Heat winners were, Brian Rhoads, Brian
Hilliard, and Jeff Baroody.
Brian Austin took the lead on a lap two re-start in the 4
Cyl. Stocks and went on to record the victory in this entry level
division. After several caution periods, he was able to hold off
all challanges for the top spot. Following Austin across the line
were, Terry Cornish in second, third went to Eddie Mills, point
leader,Tom Stewart was fourth, and rounding out the top five was,
Shawn Brace. Heat wins went to, Eddie Machuga, Tom Stewart, and
Ralph Warren.
Racing will continue this week at the Black Rock Speedway,
as it will be Diamond Back Tires, Flat Top Racing night. There
will be a special 40 lap, $500 to win event for the Super-Stocks,
also an extra distance $100 to win event for the 4 Cyl.Stocks,
along with, practice for the 358 Modifieds and the Empire Super
Sprints. The Modifieds will be practicing for the big 97 lap
Skoal 358 Prolong Syracuse qualifying event at Black Rock on
Tuesday August 26th. Gates open at 5:30, and racing gets underway
