McCREADIE CASHES IN SECOND IN A ROW, GUERERRI WINS FIRST

CANANDAIGUA, NY..6/14/97...Bob McCreadie recorded his second straight Canandaigua DIRT Modified feature victory last Saturday during the running of the Peter Koch Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep feature event. Paul Guererri recorded his first ever DIRT Sportsman feature victory in that division's 20-lap main event. Other feature winners for the evening were Les Whyte in the street stock class and Tom Jul in the enduro class. Troy Griffin, piloting a 358-modified, slammed into the lead at the drop of the feature event green, only to find on the very next circuit a wild spinning melee down the front stretch. Caught in all of the action, sliding backwards, was Scott Schrader. Even though Schrader recovered quickly it was not fast enough to beat Dave Farney's yellow flag.

The restart saw Griffin hold on to his lead, with Darryl Ruggles in second followed by Vic Coffey, Charlie Donk and Ray Bliss Jr..On lap eight the yellow was displayed for a second time, this time for the slowing car of Gil Tegg Jr.. Griffin was driving a masterful race, even though earlier in the evening his car was showing signs of sever smoke. McCreadie had now caught Griffin setting up the classic McCreadie charge for the lead. On lap 15, Griffin succumbed to the assalt as McCreadie drove into the lead. He was quickly followed by Joe Plazek. These two proceeded to drive away into a race unto themselves. Meanwhile a half track back, Griffin was trying to maintain his third place position. On lap 19, Ruggles came to a stop in the second turn. This left Griffin, Bobby Varin and Gary Tomkins to fight it out for third. With just two laps remaining in the race Charlie Donk was able to grab fifth place from Tomkins. Abouth this same time Varin was passing Griffin for third place. But on the final lap Griffin recovered his lost third position. This made the final finishing top five to be McCreadie, Plazek, Griffin, Varin and Donk. This victory gives McCreadie 93 Canandaigua feature wins, just over 10 away from all time feature winner Alan Johnson.

In sportsman action Paul Guererri took the lead on the second lap from Loren Lincoln and never looked back. As the first lap was concluding the number 19 of Jon Kuluszo lost a left rear tire coming out of the fourth turn. Unfortunately Steve Gray vaulted over the tire as it rolled down the front chute. Gray was able to return to the race for just a few more laps before calling it a night. Directly behind Guererri were Chuck Graham, last week's winner, and Todd Henderson. Henderson was able to pass sophomore pilot Graham for second on lap 14. Pre-race favorite Karl Comfort had his race come to an end on lap 12, when he looped his car sideways less the 20 miles away from the finish line. Rounding out the top five were Guererri, Henderson, Graham, Ridley and Lincoln.

The street stock main event saw a number of yellow flags. Dean DeMallie drove a steady determined race, but in the end it would be his demise. Les Whyte drove a determined, fast race, which eventually would give him the victory. Tom Jul won the 20-lap enduro which saw less then seven cars running at the finish. A number of grinding crashes helped to eliminate much of the field. In the end it would be Tom Jul, again, for the victory.

This Saturday will be Amy's checkered Flag night at the track. On tap will be a regular show including modifieds, sportsman, street stock and enduros. Gates open at 5 p.m.., The gates will remain open until 7 p.m., when it's time to race.
