CLAPPERTON, DIETRICH, MCKERNAN, MARYOTT AND DOLL WIN FIVE MILE POINT

KIRKWOOD, NY..6/15/97...Mike Clapperton won the Modified Feature and took the point lead Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway. Dennis Deitrich, Greg McKernan, Reed Maryott, and Frankie Doll also claimed wins on Bihamton Pepsi-Cola.

Dick Longstreet came off his Parts Plus Dash for Cash win and darted into the early lead inthe Modified feature. Mike Clapperton started in the ninth and only took five laps to move into third. He then slipped past Larry Croker for second on lap seven and then he took the lead fro Longstreet on the next circuit.

Tim Olenski, Chuck Akulis, Glenn Knapp, and Mike Colsten were on the move at that point. Olenski rocketed past three cars to take three cars to take over second and set his sights on Clapperton. Colsten slowed between turns one and two with front end damage on lap 16. On the next lap Akulis slowed with flat tire.

Olenski stayed right on Clappertons back bumper but Clapperton had things under control and went on to score his first win of the season. Olenski was a solid second ahead of Glenn Knapp, Dick Marcinko and Bob Hamm, who both made late race charges. Butch Tittle and Longstreet came across the line in a tie for sixth ahead of Jeff Rudalavage, Randy Davenport and Croker.

Dennis Dietrich took the lead for Eddie McKernan onlap three of the Sportsman feature and never looked back. Jim Gabriel Jr, was running third when he encountered the bill Deckleman car that was sitting in turn three. Gabriel, Deckleman, Gary Allen and Jim Crawn were all involved, ending the night for Gabriel and Allen. Rookie Don Hart, Jr. ran a super race as he kept pace with Dietrich. Dietrich however, had other plans aand he cruised to the win. He was followed by Hart, Gary Stage, Jim Toy and Chad Cook. Positions six through ten went to Bob Lane, Crawn, McKernan, Eddie White and Jason Rought.

The Street Stock Feature found Walt McClenan out front when the red flag flew on lap five for Art Darling Jr who barrel rolled down the backstretch. He walked away uninjured. Greg McKernan took the lead on lap 6 and despite constant pressure from Gary Card, he held him off for his first win of the season.

Card was second ahead of McClenan, Jamie Shea, and Butch klinger. Dave Rumsey, Randy Gates, Ricky Whitman, Rodney Hart and Pete Crawn rounded out the top ten.

Reed Maryott became the first repeat winner in any division this year when he claimed the Pure Stock win. JOe Rafferty was second ahead of Al Collingwood, Charlie Gilbert, and Rich Powell. Sixth through tenth went to Bryan Post, Brian Gebel;ein, RC Henry, Jim Palmer and Dan Slezak.

Frank Mower was injured when he was hit hard in the drivers side door. He was sent to the hospital overnight for observation. When racing resumed Bill Cook got upside down onthe homestretch. He was not injured.

Frankie Doll won the Dwarf Car feature over Eddie Bell, Kevin Doll, Gordy Isham, Louie Gardinier.

COUNTER POINTS...Thre has yet to be a repeat winner in the Modifieds, Sportsman, or Street Stocks this year...The evening was crash filled as several hard wrecks took place...Point leads changed in all four weekly divisions. Mike Clapperton (Mods), gary Stage (Sportsman), Gary Card (Street Stocks) and Bryan Post (Pure Stocks).

This Saturday is Gary's U-Pull It Night Featuring the DIRT Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks. The second of the rollover competitions will also take place on Saturday. Race time is 7 pm.
