DANNY JOHNSON BECAME THE FIRST REPEAT WINNER ABOARD THE MODIFIED DIVISION AT RANSOMVILLE

By...Tana Robinson

Danny Johnson of Rochester, NY took his second of the season at the big "R" last Friday night and became the first repeat winner in the modified ranks. Danny, who suffered mechanical woes with his new car the past few weeks, brought out old faithful who didn't let him down as he went on for the win.

At the start, Russ Zimmerman and Kenny Cosgrove brought the field down for the start. Cosgrove took the early lead followed by Zimmerman, George Jowdy, Rick Hoctor and Fred Cade. Cosgrove looked very strong early on as he stretched out his lead. Jowdy took over second as Zimmerman faded back a bit. Danny Johnson, after starting 14th, worked his way into fifth by lap five. He then went to work on the top four, one by one getting by until he was in second on lap 8.

A caution bunched up the field on lap 8. On the restart, Cosgrove continued to show the way with heavy pressure being put on by Danny Johnson. Cosgrove had the upper groove, leaving Danny to try the bottom. Scott Kerwin ran a close third, looking for his opportunity as well.

As the laps dwindled down, Danny continued to work the lowside, getting along side of Cosgrove on several occasions. Kerwin, Bicknell and Alan Johnson rounded out the top five. With just a hand full of laps remaining, the top three approached lapped traffic. A lapped car chose to stay high, trapping Cosgrove and allowing Danny Johnson by on the bottom for the lead. Cosgrove held onto second followed by Kerwin. At the checkered it was Johnson in for the win followed by Cosgrove, Kerwin, Bicknell and Alan Johnson.
