CARL REYNOLDS WINS 1980 FIVE MILE POINT CRC 100

Carl Reynolds of Scranton, Pa recorded one of the biggest victories of his modified career Tuesday night at 5 Mie PointSpeedway as he outdistanced a star sludded field of 34 of the top dirt modified divers in the East to take the 100 CRC Schaefer Qualifier, Reynolds now becomes the 5 Mae representative and quaranteed starter in the World Series of dirt track racing at the Syracuse Schaefer 200 in October The first 24 cars, qualified by virtue of ther heat finishes drew for their starting position in the 100 lap grind and Berrie Griffen of Peckville. Pa picked the number one spot Griffen took advantage of his pole position to grab the early lead while Jimmy Horton of Bridgewater NJ came up from his four th place spot to take second The caution tiew early on the second circuit giving Horton the lead as he powered his Statewide Racing machine out of tum four on the restart Reynolds, who drew eighth starting spot, had moved into third by lap seven and then on into second and set his sights on the NJ super star. It was a drag race for the lead on lap 21 with Reynolds getting the better bite on the outside to take the front running spot

Defending 5 Mile Schaefer Qualither winner and current point leader Chuck Akulis, who started 22nd along with defending Schaefer 200 champ Jack Johnson, who started 14th, worked through the heavy traffic on the inside to take their places in the top ten by lap 25, while another local star Cart Nagle was holding down a strong fourth from his onginal 9th place starting spot Reynold's lead grew bigger as the cautions ceased by lap 52 while Dave Lape Horton, John son, Akulis and Nagle did battle for second through soxth Horton settled back into second by lap 76 and gained on the Kreisel built chassis as Reynolds got caught up in the pack but the Scranton youngster put his home track knowledge to work and stayed ahead of the no 3 Nagle moved into third over Lape by lap 89 and remained there unchallenged while Lape fell back to fight it out with Johnson. Akulis and now Will Cagle When the checkered flew at the close of the exciting 100 lapper. Reynolds became the second consecutive local star to represent the mile at the DIRT race of champions in Syracuse this fall Horton was a distant second, with Nagle five car lengths back in third Lape defeated Akulis for fourth as Cagle overtook Johnson for sixth Charlie Castle pulled Kenny Brightbill at the finish line for eighth as Alan Johnson rounded out the top ten
