Pauch Pads The Legend In New Egypt Weekend Finale

New Egypt, NJ (October 13 & 14) - When the money's on the line, count on

Billy Pauch to shine. The Frenchtown, NJ star bested a talent-rich field to

pocket the big $5,000 in Sunday's Sprint PCS Modified 50 at New Egypt

Speedway. The race was one of four special events that were a part of the

track's Legends of the Fall two-day season finale, sponsored by Advanced

Wireless and Sprint PCS.

"I kind of had my doubts there for a while, because we detuned the car for

the slick, daytime track," said Pauch, after acing the big one for the third

year in a row. "I had to make my moves up top, and keep my momentum going. I

certainly didn't want to see any cautions." In his victory lane speech,

Pauch also recognized the retired "legend" drivers who were honorary guests

for the weekend. "It's good to see the old-timers here, and get to relive

some of the old stories," he commented. "They carried the flag for many

years - and now it's our turn to carry it."

By luck of the draw, Pauch started eighth in the Sprint PCS, and was solidly

in the top-five by lap 4, running in a tight pack with leader Kenny

Brightbill, invader Jimmy Horton, Darren McCaughey and 2001 division champ

Keith Hoffman. Brightbill and Horton swapped the lead in a rail-to-rail

rivalry to the line for most of the first half, with Pauch trying hard to

make it a trio. On lap 22, Pauch's way-high outside pass finally dropped

Brightbill to third; at the crossed flags, Pauch eliminated Horton and he

was home-free. Although a lap 47 caution bunched the field, allowing Horton

and Brightbill a final shot, it was Pauch at the line for his 12th of the

year, with Brightbill second, Horton third, Fritz Epright fourth and Hoffman

fifth.

Sunday's Modified victory was compensation for Pauch's Saturday heartbreak

in the Samsung 50 for Sportsman. Pauch dominated that event, leading

decisively from lap 14 until a flat right-rear tire did him in on lap 37.

Whitehall, PA's Keith Hoffman, driving Jim Scherer's #4TJ, inherited the

point and led the remaining distance to claim the $3,000 prize. Brothers

Brian and Ryan Godown, Rick Grosso Jr. and Tom Hager completed the top five.

In Saturday's companion Advanced Wireless 25 for URC Sprints, Greg Coverdale

of Milford, DE, led every lap to score his sixth career victory at New Egypt

and take the $2,000 winner's share. Brian Seidel finished a fast-closing

second, with Mike Haggenbottom third, Dave McGough fourth and Sam Ross

fifth.

The $1,000 first-place money in Sunday's Touchpoint 30 for Street Stocks was

taken by Rich Page II. The thrilling finish saw Page win by less than a

wheel over 2001 division champ Al Cheney III, Phil Retter, Carol Whitehouse

and George Quinlan. Page also won a special Street Stock Cash Dash,

sponsored by Bill Miscoski, who put up $250 for the winner with a matching

amount going to injured driver Pat Conaway. A total of $910.50 was raised

for Conaway, who broke his hip in an accident at the track on September

29th.

The Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club also raced in two exhibition events

during the weekend, with "legends" drivers signing autograph cards on both

days.

Weekend sponsor Advanced Wireless and Sprint PCS awarded free cell phones

and many other giveaways to lucky fans. Advantage Financial Mortgage

Bankers, teasing racers with a $5,000 bonus for a sweep in both the

Sportsman and Modified events, gave away a pair of 27-inch TVs in a fan

drawing; and Champion Tire of Ringoes, NJ, awarded a set of passenger car

tires to another lucky race fan.
