Brayden Bills Grabs First Ever Insinger Performance Modified Win On TroupsCreek Night

Brad Smith makes it two on the season in RUSH Late Models, Welty wins Crate Sportsman, Amidon three in a row in Mini Stocks, Conklin wins first ever in Hobby Stocks as does Travis Webster in Street Stocks. Levi Riley makes it four wins in Warrior Division and Delgrosso wins one for Billy Joe Birdsall in FWD action.

Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.

(Woodhull, NY) - Troupscreek Auto and Troupscreek Heating were onboard as the nightly event sponsors at the Woodhull Raceway for the June 12, 2021 event. It was a son/father affair in the Insinger Performance Modified Division as Addison, NY high school student, Brayden Bills backed up last weeks runner-up performance with a feature win, his first ever since joining up with Woodhull’s top division a year ago. Father, Mike Bills jumping into the Frank Dunning machine for the night joined his son, Brayden on the front row of the twenty-five- lap feature event. From the drop of the green flag Brayden Bills had a rocket ship as he jumped into the early lead followed by Mike Bills. Caution flags on laps four, eleven and thirteen kept the field bunched and the lead group in clean air with Brayden Bills still in command. Cory Costa, who had lined up seventh on the opening grid along with Donnie Lawson who started just one row ahead of Costa were moving thru the field with Lawson on the bottom and Costa blasting the heavy cushion. Costa began to pass cars at will and assumed the top spot on lap fourteen and simply drove away from the field and looked poised to claim his second feature of the 2021 season. However, as it has happened on two prior occasions this season while clearly on his way to victory, Costa succumbed to mechanical issues and was done on lap seventeen. From there Brayden Bills reassumed to lead, but with some eight laps remaining the event was far from over as father, Mike Bills and Donnie Lawson were now putting an incredible amount of pressure on the race leader. Lawson was all over Mike Bills like a cheap shirt and tried every trick to make a pass, but on every occasion, Bills would close the door. With parallel sticks showing it still was totally uncertain who would win but, Brayden Bills methodically hit his marks and with his dad and Lawson preoccupied with each other was able to take home the hardware. Mike Bills finished second making it an extremely rare Son/Father one/two finish. Lawson held on for third chased across the line by Ryan Susice making his first appearance of the season piloting the Patrick Hoopes owned machine while opening night winner, Joe Dgien claimed fifth.

In the companion NAPA Crate Sportsman Division veteran driver, Dale Welty put on a clinic as he was able to pick up his first feature event of the season at Woodhull. Welty would line up outside the sixth starting row, made some nifty moves in the early going and dogged then race leader, Tyle Lawrence. After a caution flag on lap fourteen, Welty made his move on Lawrence and took command of the twenty -five lap event which would go without another yellow. Welty won by a healthy margin as Lawrence was able to hold on for second place, his best finish of the season. Aiden Grover began the event in the third row, ran in with the lead group throughout the event and claimed third at the finish followed by opening night winner, Josh Keesey and Bob Butcher who rounded out the top five finishers.

The Cummings Trucking RUSH Late Model Division held their Annual King of the Ring one on one event sponsored by Troupscreek Auto and Troupscreek heating paying $500 cash to the winner of the event. The final round came down to Chuck LaFleur and Jason Knowles and in a nail biter, Knowles would pick up the win, the four-foot trophy along with the cash. In the regular Cummings Trucking twenty lap feature go, Jim Buck and Darin Horton would lead the field to Tony VanPelt’s opening green flag with Buck holding court at the top of the field for the opening seven circuits. Brad Smith who had already picked up a feature win earlier in the year began the event outside the third row, caught leader Buck and took control on lap nine. From there Bad Brad opened a huge advantage between himself and the rest of the field and cruised to the win that was slowed only twice by yellow flags. Chuck LaFleur, who as earlier mentioned finished second to Jason Knowles in the King of the Ring once again found himself playing the brides maid role as he finished in the runner up spot to Smith. Jason McGregor began the event in eleventh and came home to finish in the third and final podium position. Last weeks feature winner, Austin Allen once again showed that he has the stuff to compete in the tough RUSH Late Model Division as he finished fourth while Joe Layfield, who began the event in third rounded out the top five.

Travis Webster has struggled mighty throughout the first half of the 2021 season in the Joe Willcox Performance Street Stock Division. However, Webster took full advantage of his second row starting spot, shot into the early advantage, withstood four caution flags which bunched the field and cruised to his first ever win in the division. With Webster out front and dominating all eyes were on the battle for second as last weeks feature winner, Laverne Knickerbocker had his hands full with perennial class favorite Brett Marlatt as the two were in a slug fest for second and as the checkered flag waved at the completion of the twenty-lap event it was Knickerbocker holding off Marlatt by a car length as the pair would finish second and third. Ted Morseman and Dan Gardner would complete the top five.

The Woodhull Auto Parts Hobby Stock continues to provide plenty of exciting race action and on this night, it was yet another new face finding victory lane as Brandon Conklin would jump into the lead from his second row starting spot and show the way the entire twenty lap distance. It was a popular win for Conklin as he was mobbed in victory lane by a host of fans, crew members and fellow drivers as he picked up his first ever feature win. Mike Spencer, like several others on this night placed a number 88 on the side of his machine in memory of former Woodhull Raceway standout competitor, Billy Joe Birdsall who lost his life earlier in the week, came home for a well-deserved runner up finish as he was chased across the line by Greg Young who ran second throughout most of the event, but wound up third at the finish. Clayton Mclean and Jeredd Dennis both once again showed their prowess in the class as they nailed down the fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively.

Brody Amidon has been on a tear all season long in the Wicked Tee’s Mini Stock Division and after chasing then race leader, Jason Warner for the opening dozen laps he was able to make the pass and go onto win number four on the campaign and his third in a row in the division. Warner had another great run but came up a bit short and had to settle for second while Russell Morseman would claim third chased across the line by race winner Brody Amidon’s father, Rick Amidon and Dylon Morseman who finished fourth and fifth.

Adam Delgrosso and Codie Baker once again asserted themselves as two of the dominating players in the Johnson Auto Supply FWD Division as the pair once again showed the way in the FWD twenty lap feature. Delgrosso was able to get into the top spot on lap two and from there it was holding off Baker to claim his second win of the season. In victory lane an emotional Delgrosso dedicated his win to the late Billy Joe Birdsall and like several others on the night, Delgrosso also had the number 88 taped to side of his classy looking machine. Baker, who came into the night with two feature wins to his credit had to settle for second at the line followed by Wesley Houghtaling who had won previously on May 22. May 15 FWD feature winner, Garrett Wilson had another solid top five finishing fourth while Jeff Lafler continues to improve each week and rounded the top five.

Levi Riley had the lead, lost the lead to number one nemesis, Ridge Cobb, then regained the lead a few laps later and cruised to his fourth win of the campaign in the Wicked Tee’s Youth Warrior Division. Cobb, who has two wins to his credit thus far finished in the runner up spot followed across the line by Bradly Morseman, Marshall O’Brien and Keegan Smith.

Congratulations to all winners.
