HORTON, RYAN GODOWN AND CHENEY ARE EAST WINDSOR CHAMPS -- PAUCH WINS MODIFIED 50 AS 2000 SEASON CLOSES
EAST WINDSOR, N.J. ~ Perhaps the most weather effected season in the 35-year history of the East Windsor Speedway came to a close Friday night as Jimmy Horton of Neshanic Station became the Small-Block Modified champion, Al Cheney of Cranbury grabbed the Street Stock crown and Ryan Godown of Ringoes beat out his brother, Brian, for his first ever Sportsman title.
The Modified crown was settled in a 50-lap, double point main event. Frank Cozze of Wind Gap, Pa. was the early leader in the contest and appeared to be on his way to breaking a season-long winless streak. All the while, Frenchtown's Billy Pauch was motoring through the pack until he caught Cozze on lap 18. Pauch needed just two more laps to race into the lead before he cruised the rest of the way to the
season-ending victory.
Defending champion Kenny Brightbill of Sinking Springs, Pa. was the runner-up, while Freehold's Eddie Bohn, Horton and Darren McCaughey of Oldwick settled the top five. Doug Hoffman of Allentown, Pa. was Horton's closest foe in the point race, but his chance at a title strike ended early when he dropped from the race on lap seven after a tangle earlier in the event.
Al Cheney was cautious during the final event of the season as he requested a starting spot at the rear of the 24-car field and then kept within striking distance of his closest point rival, Kim Cook of Hamilton. Cheney ended up 13th in the final Street Stock 15-lapper of the year, while Cook was just ahead in 11th.
Meanwhile, Rob Ormsbee of Wall raced through the pack to win his second straight Street Stock feature event, while Ron Coverly of Beverly was the runner-up. Carol Whitehouse of Hamilton was third, while North Brunswick's Lenny Riley and Larry Bubeck of New Hope, Pa. were fourth and fifth.
For most of the season's final 20-lap Sportsman feature, title contending brothers Ryan and Brian Godown slugged it out at mid-pack in the race for the crown. When the checker flag waved Ryan beat Brian to the line by one spot, ninth and 10th, respectively, and that was enough for Ryan Godown to win his first ever title at the half mile clay oval.
At the front of the pack, Mike Lyons of Hightstown raced into the lead on lap four and raced to the win over Jack Swain of Mt. Laurel. Art Liedl of Somerville, Richie Pratt, Jr. and Barry Christ were third through fifth.
With the racing season now in the record books, plans and preparations are already in gear for the 2001 campaign. Speedway manager and head of the track preparation crew, Butch Jones, will be adding truckloads of new clay to the racing surface soon so that it can knit into the track before the new season opens. Promoter Jack Simmons also said that the annual Awards Ceremony and Rules Meeting is planned for early March, 2001 and that the 36th season of stock car racing will open in early April.
