First DIRTcar 358 Modified win to Derek Webb at Can Am

By: Tim Baltz

It had been two weeks since the drivers at the Can Am Speedway hit the race track. This past Friday was full of excitement and a first-time winner.

In the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman it turned out to be a family affair. Joe Trichilo led the opening 3 laps before opening day winner Owen Nier took the lead with Keegan Nier charging to the second spot. Owen and Keegan put on a great show for the fans as they battle back and forth for the win. On the final lap it appeared that Owen Nier was on his way to his 2nd win of the year, but a late caution bunched the field up for one more start, giving Keegan Nier one last chance. On the final restart Owen Nier was able to stretch out his lead and pull away to grab his second win of the season. Keegan Nier crossed in 2nd with Joe Trichilo, Paul DeRuyter and Ian Bressette completing the top 5.

The 25 lap Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds saw Cameron Black lead the opening 3 laps, until Jack Meeks made the charge to the front, taking the lead on lap 4 with Taylor Caprara moving to 2nd. As the lap clicked off Derek Webb was on the move as he climbed to the third spot and then chased down the top 2 drivers. Just past halfway, Webb continued his march forward as he took second from Caprara, then ran down Jack Meeks. Both Webb and Meeks put on a great show as they battle side by side for the lead. On lap 18 Webb made his move, taking the top spot away from Jack Meeks, over Taylor Caprara, Tim Fuller and Tyler Meeks. As the laps wound down Derek Webb charged to a big lead and without the assistance of a yellow flag, Taylor Caprara and the rest of the field had no chance to catch the leader. Derek Webb would finally live his dream as a DIRTcar 358 Modified winner at Can Am, in the 830th Modified feature ever held at the speedway. Taylor Caprara held on for 2nd with Tim Fuller coming from 21st to third. Jack Meeks and Tyler Meeks completed the top 5.

Franklin Mackin led the start of the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman feature over Frank Sibley and Gavin Eisle. Mackin had a great car and was holding off charges from Sibley in the early going, but Gavin Eisle was on his way as he took 2nd before halfway. On lap 10 Mackin still was in control but Eisle was closing quickly as it became a two-car battle for the win. Mike Fowler was also on the move, coming from 12th to take position number three, but still had ground to make up on the top 2 drivers. As the laps wound down the lead gap stabilized at 3 car lengths, with Mackin looking at a possible first ever win. On the final lap heading into turn 3, Mackin made a mistake in traffic, allowing Gavin Eisle and Mike Fowler to get by for the top 2 spots. Eisle would march on to take a surprise first win of 2022. Mike Fowler would claim his best finish of the season, crossing 2nd. Franklin Mackin recovered to finish third, with Frank Sibley and Tyler Corcoran completing the top 5.

In the 15 lap Panther Frameworx Crate Sprints, Logan Crisafulli has run well but has had bad luck in trying to get to victory lane. On this night he would be strong as he took the lead from early pace setter, Ken Klinkowski with Josh Verne Jr., Luke Stewart and Jonah Mutton completing the top 5. Klinkowski would run into problems on lap 8 as his car shutdown, bringing out the yellow. On the restart Crisafulli grabbed the lead but Luke Stewart would make the move, taking 2nd from Verne, then reeled in the race leader. Over the final laps Luke Stewart did all he could to take the lead but it was not enough, as Logan Crisafulli finally put a perfect night together, to score his first Crate Sprint Car win at Can Am. Stewart would settle for 2nd in his first start of the season, with Josh Verne Jr. crossing in third. Ryan Poole and Jonah Mutton completed the top 5.

Austin Smith was the early race leader at the start of the 15 lap Marsha Gibbons TLC Real Estate Thundercar feature over Jock Symonds and Justin McIntyre. Smith was running the high lane but Symonds was strong on the bottom and ran down Smith for the top spot. On lap 7 Symonds would take the lead but points leader Joe Orvis was on the move taking the 2nd spot away. Symonds and Orvis would pull away to settle the feature between them, with both cars evenly match over the final laps. Orvis did all he could but it was not enough, as Jock Symonds would hold on to record his first win of the year in his first start of the season. Orvis would claim his third straight runner up finish. Austin Smith, Justin McIntyre and Chuck Monica rounded out the top 5

Next week the FABCO DIRTcar Pro Stocks return to action for a full card of racing at Can Am, with action beginning at 7pm.
