Pauch Wins The War And The Battle

New Egypt, NJ (Sept 25) -- In a night filled with surprises in all

classes, Billy Pauch pulled the biggest stunner: the Frenchtown, NJ flyer

made up 65 points on arch rival Kenny Brightbill, the division point

leader since June, to clinch the $10,000 Modified championship Saturday at

New Egypt Speedway. Pauch did the deed by scoring his seventh win in his

last eight Modified starts, while point leader Brightbill was crashed out

of the race on lap 11. It was the only time Brightbill failed to finish an

event all season.

Tom Hager led the 24-car Modified field before Rick Grosso Jr. pulled out

to the point. Pauch had powered from 17th to fourth when Brightbills

Tabloid Graphics #19 was slammed into the fourth-turn barrier tire and was

done for the night. Pauch picked his way into the front easily from that

point on, coming in for his 13th Modified win of 1999 and a stunning

championship upset by a mere five points. Tom Carberry claimed second

after a strong Grosso Jr. coasted across the line in third with an

expired engine. Hager and Tim Tanner Jr. completed the top five. An

emotional Pauch dedicated the night to his former teammate Kevin Gobrecht,

who was killed in an Outlaw Sprint car accident on Friday at Eagle

Raceway, Nebraska.

East Windsor, NJs Larry Archer passed Jack Swain with seven laps

remaining to capture his third victory of the year in the Sportsman class.

Swain, Jimmy Harris, Rocco Infante and Rich Scagliotta followed Archer to

the line. Ironically, the hotly contested $3,000 Sportsman championship

was decided in the pits: contenders Bob Worthington and Keith Brightbill

both retired early from the event, with Worthington holding onto the title

by 16 points.

In a chaotic Street Stock feature, the top two in the $1,500 point chase,

Billy Bauer and Ralph Gargiulo, were blackflagged to the pits; Pat Conaway

capitalized on their misfortune to grab the division championship. Bill

Gerber won the battle this night, his first of the year. Al Cheney III, Carol

Whitehouse, Richie Byrne and George Quinlan followed Gerber to the stripe.

One lucky fan collected $1,370 in the nightly 50/50 drawing. And

Christopher Clayton, 10, of Howell, NJ, is one happy kid -- as winner of

the kids coloring contest, Jack Swains Sportsman car will be painted as

per his design for next season, courtesy of Twinz Lettering of Toms River,

NJ.

This week, the URC Sprint cars will make their final appearance of the

year. Theyll be joined by the Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stocks,

with an open competition 13x92-inch tire rule in effect. Gates open at 3

pm, warm-ups are at 4 pm and the first heat gets underway at 5 pm. ***

admission is $18, children 7-12 are $6, and 6 and under are free.
