CARL NAGEL PICKS UP FIRST MODIFIED FEATURE OF 1989 AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY ON RUSTY WALLACE NIGHT

Carl Nagel earned his first Modified feature win of 1989 at Five Mile Point Speedway and Harry Benjamin also earned his only win of '89 in the four Cylinder Modified feature. In the special Rusty Wallace match race Mike Clapperton and Wallace finished in a dead heat as the fans were on their feet throughout the entire race. Don's Automotive Mall and Gary's U-Pull It were the sponsors of all the nights racing.

In the Modified feature Rich Tiffany captured the early lead over Joe Sellers. The two battled for several laps with Sellers leading and then Tiffany recapturing the lead on lap 4. Lap 4 was the first caution of the evening as there would be two more before the race resumed. When the green came back out Tiffany continued to lead but now Carl Nagel was in second place and began to pressure Tiffany for the top spot. On lap 11 Nagel closed in on Tiffany and on the following lap Nagel took command with Doug Worthing up to second place. The caution flew once again for a pileup in turn 1. Bill Mead, Dave Mead, Dan Spratt, Chuck Akulis, Butch Tittle were all involved in the crash. During the caution flag Worthing had a tire go flat and headed to the pit area.

When the green flew again Nagel had to fight off George Suprick and David Doig. Nagel pulled ahead as Doig moved up to second as Lynn Highhouse and Mike Colsten battled for third. On lap 25 Akulis moved around Suprick for the fifth position and on lap 27 Highhouse moved into second. With two laps remaining Nagel and Highhouse were battling for the lead. Highhouse tried all routes but it wasn't to be as Nagel hung on for the popular win. Highhouse finished second, Doig was third, Colsten and Akulis rounded out the top five. Suprick, Tim Olenski, Butch Tittle, Mike Nagel and Ron Mawson completed the top ten finishers. Heats were won by Tiffany, Mike Nagel, Glenn Knapp and Matt Solomon with the consolations being won by Colsten and Mawson. The Modified feature was shortened to 30 laps because of the speedways 11:00 p.m. curfew.

Rusty Wallace made his first ever appearance to Five Mile Point Speedway last Saturday. Wallace signed autographs for the fans, held a press conference and then prepared for a special match race against the top ten point leaders in the Street Stock division. The drivers drew for position on the speedway with Wallace drawing the second starting position and Mike Clapperton, the current point leader drawing the pole. When the race began the fans rose to their feet as they knew this was going to be a "Shootout". Wallace took the lead right from the beginning but could not shake Clapperton. The two battled side by side the entire race as Wallace showed his preference for the outside groove and Clapperton stayed on the inside. Mark DeVaul and Al MacRabie battled for third as the two leaders pulled away.

With two laps remaining the two leaders were still side by side without ever making contact. When the white flag flew Wallace remained on the outside as Clapperton had only one last chance. When the two entered the third and fourth turns Clapperton went underneath and looked to pull out an upset win. When the two crossed the finish line it was a dead heat as the fans shouted their approval. Mark De Vaul finished next in line followed by Al MacRabie and Andy Belles. Harry Marvin, Gary Card, Charlie Gilbert, Russ Hunsinger, Don Tweedie and Mike Stoddard rounded out the field.

In the Four Cylinder Modified feature Harry Benjamin picked up his first win of the season. At the start Benjamin wasted no time as he took the lead from his second place starting position. Benjamin pulled away as Charles Webster was running a great race trying to hold off Mike Latta and Gary Stage. Stage moved into second place as he tried to close in on Benjamin. By lap 10 Benjamin was a full straight ahead of Stage with Webster, Latta and Randy Davenport battling for third place. When the checkered flag flew it was Benjamin winning by a large margin. Stage, Latta, Webster and Davenport rounded out the top five. Positions 6-10 were filled by Bruce Detro, Tim Vincent, John Janus, Mike Walters and Don Hickling. Heats were won by Benjamin and Chet Carr.
