Fuller, Rogers, Verne and Symonds notch big wins in Can Am season finale
By: Tim Baltz
Thie final night of the season saw a great crowd and a full pit area with the stars of the DIRTCar 358 Modified Series, DIRTCar Sportsman Series, Action Sprint Tour and the Sundance Leisure Thundercars. O.D. Greene, FX Caprara Family of Car Dealerships and BT Construction were on hand to see some great action as the drivers were up on the wheel all night.
“We got a green Can Am Here we Go!!!” is what John Burr would have said at the start of a feature event at Can Am Speedway. The 5th annual John Burr Memorial for the DIRTCar Sportsman Series took to the speedway and Dave Rogers wasted little time jumping out to the lead over Cedric Gauvreau and Xavier Andrews. Rogers would lead the opening 5 laps before a tangle in turn 2 slowed the race, as Anthony Rasmussen lost a left front tire, ending his night early. On the restart Rogers continued to lead with Gauvreau right there with him. Both drivers were fast but near the half way point Gauvreau dropped off the pace and headed straight to the pits, which brought Xavier Andrews and Jessica Power into the picture. The two Kingston Ontario natives closed in on Rogers for the top spot and the battle was on. With 10 laps to go Power got by Andrews for the runner up spot and quickly put the pressure on Rogers for the lead. Over the final laps Dave Rogers did all he could to hold off Power for the win, both drivers even made contact with the infield tires and still were able to hold on to the top spots. In the end it was Dave Rogers coming away with his 4th career DIRTCar Sportsman Series win and third at Can Am. Jessica Power crossed the line with a series best 2nd place effort as did Xavier Andrews in third. Gavin Eisle and Mike Fowler completed the top 5.
Dave Marcuccilli was the dominant force at the start of the 50 lap DIRTCar 358 Modified Series race as he charged to the lead over Jorda McCreadie and Matt Caprara. The defending series champion was looking for something good to happen on this night as a tough start in the previous events at Glen Ridge and Fulton, set him back in the points coming into the night. Marcuccilli led by nearly a straight away but the battle was on behind him. Caprara was making a run at McCreadie for the runner up spot but on the move was Tim Fuller, two-time series champion and three-time track champion. Fuller made it to fourth and battled with both Caprara and McCreadie as Marcuccilli continued his strong drive. At the half way point Lance Willix, recently crowned the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Series champion for the DIRTCar 358 Modifieds, spun in turn two while running 6th and the yellow flew. On the restart Marcuccilli was able to drive away but Fuller was on the charge getting by McCreadie for third, then he made the pass on Matt Caprara for 2nd, but still had a long way to go to catch the leader. On lap 30 Fuller got the break he wanted as the yellow flew bunching the field up for a key restart. When the green flew Fuller went to work as he grabbed the lead over Marcuccilli, with Felix Roy making a run to the third spot. With Fuller in front the battle was on for second as Roy put all the pressure he could on Marcuccilli for second but couldn’t get by. In the end Tim Fuller collected his 4th win of the year at Can Am along with his 19th career series win. Dave Marcuccilli crossed 2nd over Felix Roy Erick Rudolph and Zach Payne.
The 9th running of the Ron White Memorial for the Sundance Leisure Thundercars saw complete domination by Jock Symonds. The Lafargeville New York driver jumped to the lead with Steve Smith and Francis White trying to track him down. Symonds was on cruise control and looking to claim another Can Am win, but a red flag slowed the field before halfway. In turn 4 Daniel Valade made contact with another car, sending him upside down in a slow roll over in turn 4. Valade climbed out uninjured, but the car was done for the night. On the restart Symonds was in control again with Francis White taking second, while Corey Valade made his move to third around Steve Smith. With driver battling hard for the second spot in the closing laps, Jock Symonds was in a class of his own as he dominated the entire event to score the Ron White Memorial victory. Francis White would hold off a late race charge by Damien Bechler to come home second, with Corey Valade and Steve Smith rounding out the top 5.
The Action Sprint Tour East Series was making their debut on American soil, but the tour regulars would have to deal with track champion Josh Verne Jr. The 2023 champion took the lead on lap 5 and authored a dominant performance on the night leading by over a straight away with Andrew Hennessy and Cam McKinnon trying to close the gap. With Verne in control the battle was on for second with Hennessy and McKinnon, while East Series points leader Lee Ladouceur made his way into the battle as well running in 4th. Over the remaining laps, Josh Verne Jr. was not going to be denied as he accomplished a season long goal, winning on the Action Sprint Tour for the very first time and claiming his 6th win of the year. Andrew Hennessy, who claimed his first series last weekend at Brighton on the National Tour, claimed the runner up spot, with Lee Ladouceur, Tucker Donath and Cam McKinnon completing the top 5.
The 2023 season is now complete at the Can Am Speedway and plans are already in the works for 2024. The Bartlett family, staff and Management, want to thank all the drivers and teams for their support this past season. Most importantly, Can Am Speedway thanks all the dedicated race fans, who turned out each week to see some exciting racing action, as we look forward to bringing you another action-packed season next year.
Lots will be happening in the off-season and to keep up with what is happening, be sure to give Can Am a follow on their Facebook page. See you in 2024!
