Afton Fair Board Night Brings Excitement
By Dawn Maynard
A beautiful night and many race teams on hand for great racing. The Afton Fair Board was on hand to witness lots of exciting competition in all the divisions. At intermission they were able to visit with drivers from the Crate Sportsman, Limited Sportsman and IMCA Modified teams.
First feature on the track was the Crate Sportsman. Craig Pope and Darell Quackenbush brought the field to the green. Craig grabbed the early lead with Bill Davey Jr. looking to steal it away. The forty-two of Pope continued to lead the feature, with several cautions coming into play. Coming from the mid pack Gary Smith was making his way to the front. He spun on the front stretch on the next restart. He was able to continue at the rear of the field. The battle up front now was between Craig Pope and Todd Titus who was doing everything in his power to get around the Pope machine. Coming off turn two Titus made a move to the inside of the Pope car causing them both to spin. This gave the lead to Matt Brewer who took command. He had Bill Davey Jr. looking to take away the lead. Unfortunately for Davey that would not happen as Matt Brewer went on to win the twenty-five lap event. Bill Davey Jr. held on to second, third was Jared Green, fourth went to Phil Recchio and fifth was Scott Torbitt.
The 600cc Modifieds made their way onto the track. This was the week that the bounty was raised on Ryan Jordan after he had won four consecutive feature events. Ryan started in the fourth position with his sights set on the top spot. The early lead was held by Darwin Greene Jr., but it was Ryan Jordan who would overtake the Greene machine. Coming from the last starting position was Brett Gray who arrived late to the track. Gray was hoping to dethrone Ryan taking home the bounty money. As in the past weeks, Ryan opened up a good lead, with Brett working his way into second. In the closing lap, a caution came out for Aiden Miller who suffered front end damage. This tightened up the field for the final laps. On the restart Gray looked to the inside and outside of the Jordan machine. Brett was not able to make the pass for the lead and had to settle for second. Ryan Jordan grabbed win number five, with Brett Gray in second. Third went to Ryan David-Kadaronak, in fourth was John Hoover and coming in fifth was Jack Sherwood. The bounty is now $500 if someone can win the feature event over Ryan Jordan. If no one is able to complete that Ryan and his team will take home the cash next week.
The mighty Modifieds came to the track with Tyler Yeagle and Geoff Quackenbush in the front row. It's been a couple of tough weeks for the Yeagle team as mechanical woes have plagued them. They were hoping tonight would be a better one. When the green fell Tyler grabbed the lead with Geoff right on his bumper. They raced hard and clean until lap nine when the caution came out for a spin in turn three. On the restart Tyler regained the lead for one lap as Shane Jablonka stole it away. Tyler was working outside of the track for most of the feature. Jablonka continued to lead with JR Hurlbut and Brandon Loucks battling for second and third. JR was looking inside and outside of the forty-four. On the final lap the Shane Jablonka machine spun giving the lead and win to JR Hurlbut. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Loucks, Brett Tonkin, Dan Vauter and Shaun Walker.
IMCA modifieds are a bi-weekly divisions here at Afton. Fourteen teams made their way to the track. When the green dropped Brad Sites got the lead. Tyler Belcher was trying to work his way to the front. He and Sites raced side by side. Brad grabbed the lead, never looking back. Coming from mid pack his brother Eddie Sites was making his way to the front. He was working the rear bumper of the Jake Maynard car. Eddie was looking to find the fast way on the high side. As the laps wound down it was now the brothers' show. Brad held off his brother to grab his first win. Eddie was second, third to Jake Maynard, fourth to Tyler Stoddard and fifth to Gary Roberts.
The popular FWD 4 Cylinder came to the track fourteen cars strong. Andy Bolles grabbed the early lead with Tim Vandermark and Collin Mills in tow. All the teams were on hand hoping to dethrone three time winner Collin Mills. Tim Vandermark took over the lead from Bolles. Coming alongside with him was the Mills machine. Collin was driving his father's car as he had mechanical problems with his number twenty. The Mills and Vandermark machine made contact as Tim was able to save it. On the next lap Collin moved to the inside to take over the lead. Tim Vandemark came in second, Andy Bolles third, fourth to Scott Beach and Dakota Fuller in fifth.
The final feature event was the Limited Sportsman division. Wayne Devantoy brought the field to the green. He grabbed the lead with Tom Davey working his way to the front. The battle behind the top two was heating up as Devon Green and Stephen Winsor were battling. A couple of cautions tightened up the field. Dylan Nichols made his way to the front of the field. It was a special win as Dylan dedicated the win to his grandfather who passed away this past week. Coming in second was Tom Davey, third was Wayne Devantoy, Stephan Winsor fourth and in fifth Devon Green.
Coming up next week is Pit Stop Auto night. There will be a meet and greet for the Modifieds. Factory Stocks will make their initial appearance as a bi-weekly division. Regular show for all the other divisions with bounty's in the 600cc modified driver Ryan Jordan and FWD 4 Cylinder driver Collin Mills. Make sure you mark this date on your calendar for lots of excitement. For more information check out our Facebook page.
