GARY SMITH HOLDS OFF HERM SLACK FOR SS WIN
Gary Smith held off a determined Herm Slack to take his first ARP Street Stock win on Parts Plus night. In the Four Cylinder Street Stock division, Russell Hendrickson picked up his first win of the year after swapping the lead with Ron Flannery on the last lap. Mitch Gibbs brought home his third 358 Sportsmen Modified win of the year after a close race with Curt Van Pelt.
Dave Sargent blasted off into the lead at the start of the 358 Sportsmen Modified feature. Chuck Kennison put the pressure on Sargent and the #26S spun out on the fourth lap bringing out the first of many cautions. Kennison's lead would be short-lived as Mitch Gibbs worked under Kennison and had the top spot by lap four. Meanwhile Curt Van Pelt had worked the #13 irito third and began putting pressure on Kennison. On a seventh lap restart Van Pelt powered by the 9x for second and moved up to challenge Gibbs for the lead.
Despite repeated efforts to drive by Gibbs, Van Pelt couldn't get enough bite to make the pass and had to settle for second. J.R. Hurlburt came in third with Mark Gray fourth and Wink Hinkley fifth.
Gary Smith took the early lead in the street Stock feature from Skip French. Gary Roberts moved into second by the third lap and on a restart jumped by Smith to take the lead. The two raced side by side until Smith slipped by Roberts coming out of turn four to regain the lead with nine laps remaining. With four laps to go Herm Slack and Al MacRabie got by Roberts and Slack began to pressure Smith for the lead. As the two leaders entered turn one with the Thunderbird right on Smith's back bumper on the last lap, Smith was able to hang on to take the victory. Herm Slack came in a close second with Al MacRabie third, Gary Roberts fourth and Tim French fifth.
Russell Hendrickson took the lead on a lap 3 restart and held on to take the four cylinder Street Stock feature. With two laps remaining Ron Flannery went under Hendrickson to take the lead, but the 21JR made the final pass with one lap left to take his first ARP feature. Flannery finished second with Dave Jaindl third, Ralph Jennings fourth and Joe Winans fifth.
