Chuck Kennison, Gary Roberts, and Jake Slack Share Opening Night Laurels at ARP

On a beautiful Friday evening Afton Raceway Park opened its 1992 season before a packed house of racing starved fans. Thirty-one 358 Modified-Sportsman, 31 Street Stocks, and 42 Four Cylinder Street Stocks filled the pits for Doug's Speed Shop Night.

Chuck Kennison took advantage of Ron Ford's first turn spin on lap 22 to take home the opening night 358 Sportsman-Modified win. A contributing factor to Ford's spin may have come one lap earlier when he and Kennison came together going into turn one causing damage on the left rear sheet metal on the number 7. After the incident, Ford appeared to be having handling problems but made it through turns three and four and continued to hold on to the lead before coming around in turn one. This was typical of the tight, close contact racing throughout the night.

An early race battle for the lead developed between Mark Terry, Ford, Kennison and Mike Clapperton, with the M16 of Clapperton moving into third on lap 8. A caution on lap 10 brought a restart on which Clapperton pushed wide dropping him out of the top 5. Early leader, Mark Terry lost the lead when he ended up sitting on the backstretch berm, putting Ron Ford atop the heap with Wink Hinkley second, Del Howell third, Kennison fourth, and Pat Shultis fifth.

A back and forth battle continued to rage for the second through fifth spots as Ron Ford held on to the lead. By lap 21 Kennison had moved into second, Hinkley held on to third, Mike Clapperton had fought his way into fourth, and Del Howell was running fifth. A caution brought on another restart and Mike Clapperton's push made itself evident as he dropped back to tenth. This not only set up the battle between Ford and Kennison but also a torrid fight for second between Wink Hinkley and Del Howell. At the finish it was Chuck Kennison with the win, Wink Hinkley holding on to second, Del Howell third, Pat Shultis took fourth, and Mike Clapperton was able to bounce back to finish fifth.

In the Street Stock feature Gary Roberts took the lead from Jerry

Northrup on a lap 3 restart and held on to take the victory. On lap 13 the

leaders, Roberts and Northrup, started getting into lapped traffic and it was the lapped cars that Northrup tangled with and brought out a caution. This incident put Al MacRabie in second, Marty Goodwin third, Les Streeter

fourth, and Steve Alger fifth. At the finish it was Gary Roberts with the win, Les Streeter second, Al MacRabie third, Tim French fourth, and Dan Roe fifth.

Picking up right where he left off Jake Slack took the opening night victory in the Four Cylinder Street Stock division. Slack jumped out to an early lead from the pole position. On lap 3, John Payne dropped low coming out of turn two and ran side-by-side with Slack through turns three and four until pulling into the lead down the front stretch. As they moved into slower traffic Payne got caught behind a lapped car allowing Slack to regain the lead. Meanwhile, Gary Smith had moved through the pack into third place. On a lap 7 restart the fight for second began when Smith dove under Payne to take second spot. Payne recaptured second when the 7up machine winds up sitting in the infield in turn two. Able to refire the car Smith rejoined the field in third place. On a lap 10 restart Payne's number 20 slowed and fell off the pace. Smith was unable to catch Slack at the number 68JR went on to take the win. Smith held on for second with Rick Lashway third, Jim Weaver fourth and Randy Brokaw fifth.
