RACE RECAP-
Dale Planck, Bill Walters, Skip French and Bill Bailey all took feature wins at the New Afton Raceway during Afton Fair Night. For Bill Walters it was his first career feature win while the others have all graced the Victory Lane at the fairgrounds
on earlier occasions.
The Modified feature was a real battle for the first 18 laps. Gary Smith took the lead at the drop of flagger green flag. Smith relinquished the lead on a lap five restart to Dale Planck. Planck ran at the front until lap ten when Loren
Dick Sweet's
Holland Jr. got under the Outlaw Circuit runner going through turns one and two and took the lead. The two continued to race a tight battle for the lead with the cars becoming hooked at one point before breaking loose without losing the lead. Finally, on the eighteenth circuit, Planck moved into the lead to stay. At the line it was Dale Planck taking his second feature win at Afton with Jeff Walton taking second on the last lap over third place Loren Holland Jr. Finishing in fourth was
Chuck Akulis with Mark Terry fifth. The front row of the Sportsman main told the story as Billy Walters and Greg Hoke held the first two spots through the
first 18 laps of the event. Walters took the lead at the drop of the green and led the field through the entire 20 lap distance. With two laps to go Dave Calaman worked his way past Greg Hoke for second but didn't have enough time to reel in Walters. The win was a career first for the former 4 Cylinder Modified pilot. Following Calaman and Hoke across the line were Jim Gabriel Jr. in fourth with Dave Rosa fifth.
In the 20 lap Street Stock Main event Butch Klinger took the lead from Jeff Norton on the second lap. The French brothers soon moved in on Klinger taking over the top two spots on the seventh lap. With Skip leading and Tim right on his
bumper the brothers raced for the win. Marty Goodwin was in third spot at the halfway point but could not hold off a charging Herm Slack who crossed the line third with Goodwin fourth and Gary Roberts fifth. In the final event of the night Bill Bailey took the lead from Dennis Kirk on a seventh lap restart and was never
threatened in walking away with his third consecutive Four Cylinder Stock feature win. Dennis Kirk finished second with Russ Henrickson Jr. third, Brad Jones fourth and Jamie Hurlburt fifth. AFTON EXTRAS: The Fair always brings out a packed house both in the grand stand and in the pits and this year was
no exception as 35 street stocks signed in for the nights festivities along with 28 modifieds. After having this week off the
pure stocks will return next week.
