JACK JOHNSON JUMPS TO THE FRONT AT BREWERTON

BREWERTON, NY...Jack Johnson started seventeenth and quickly worked his way through the field to take the 35 lap DIRT modified feature on Team Haskins Oldsmobile, Gleason Builders night. Other winners included Don Alvord, Pat Pontello and Glen Erwin. The DIRT Modifieds started 25 cars strong with Bob McCreadie starting last as the field took the green. McCreadie came from the hospital to the racetrack and had to start last as he did not run in either the heat on the consi. His car was not working well early as he spun twice and finally lost the right front of the car on a lap 17 incident. The race was caution filled as the slick racetrack kept the teams guessing. Jeremie Corcoran led the first 18 laps from his num- ber one starting spot. Early on, Dana Wagner and Roger Phelps would try to pass Corcoran but could not find a way by. But working through the field was Jack Johnson and he would try Corcoran on the top side of turns 1 and 2 and make the pass just past the halfway point. It was his first DIRT modified win ever at Brewerton, although several years ago he won a big block-small block shoot-out before the DIRT banner flew at Brewerton. Billy Decker was strong all night and passed Corcoran with under 10 laps to go for second place. Decker also had to come along way as he started the race in sixteenth spot. Wagner would hold on for fourth place and Donnie Wetmore would round out the top five. Tim McCreadie made his first appearance at Brewerton and looked good early but spun twice in the feature and called it a night. The IMCA mods saw a new winner as Don Alvord took the win. Alvord passed Jim Evans on lap five and held off a very determined Rob Keller at the checkered flag. This race was slowed by seven cautions. Alvord was the four cylinder super stock cham- pion from last year and had posted wins at the Cayuga County Fair- grounds earlier in the year. It was a big win for Alvord as he is atop the regional IMCA point standings. The four cylinder super stock race was a good one with Glen Erwin winning for the second time in four days. Erwin won the Tuesday race and passed Jim Olin with two laps to go to win Friday night. Olin led the first 12 laps from his outside pole position but faded as the race went on. Bill Klinkowsky passed Olin on the last lap to take second. Erwin held the points lead going into the race and had not won previous to Tuesdays race and now extends his lead. Carmen Vona finished third passed Olin at the line with Chris Carroll fifth. The dwarf car feature saw Pat Pontello take his first win of the year. Pontello started sixth and took the lead on the first lap passing five cars. Late in the race, Jim Gray mounted a challenge, getting under Pontello in the last corner but finished a car length short. A demolition derby will be added to this Friday nights show which will get underway at 7:30. Race results on race
