MIKE CLAPPERTON WINS FIRST EVER AT FIVE MILE POINT
KIRKWOOD, NY... Mike Clapperton scored his first ever DIRT Modified feature win at Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday. Den-
nis Dietrich and Rick Longstreet also scored first career wins while Chuck Boman took his fifth victory on Skoal Racing/Red Barrel Food
Stores/WIX Filters Night.
The DIRT Modified feature was marred by a massive pileup on lap nine that involved 15 cars. On a lap nine restart third running Roy Shields made contact with Dave Mead and Dick Sundgren, trigger-
ing the melee that saw Doug Worthing take a series of nasty flips. All drivers walked away uninjured from the devastating crash Dick Longstreet held the lead from the drop of the green and had
Sundgren, Butch Tittle and eventually Mike Clapperton hot on his bumper. Clapperton moved ahead of Tittle for second on lap 22
and went to work on Longstreet. These three drivers then put on a tremendous battle for the lead.
While Clapperton worked on leader Longstreet, Tittle was able
to sneak ahead of him on several occasions. The race went right down
to the wire between those three as well as Sundgren and Glenn Knapp, who were very close behind. With two laps to go they were running three wide for the lead.
As they got the white flag Clapperton went to the outside but Longstreet held him off until they went into turn three for the final time. It was there that Clapperton set up the winning pass as he again dove to the outside. As they came out of turn four they were side-by-side but Clapperton won the drag race to the finish to claim his first DIRT Modified win at Five Mile Point. The victory gave him a guaranted starting spot in the "VICTORIA 200" at Fulton n October.
Longstreet had to settle for second ahead of Tittle, Sundgren and Knapp. Larry Kelleher, Bobby Puckett, Dave Mead, Randy Davenport and Chuck Akulis rounded out the top ten.
The DIRT Sportsman feature found Dave Rosa in front for the
first nine laps. Right behind him was Dennis Dietrich and Gary Stage. Dietrich moved around Rosa to take the lead on lap 10 with Stage following behind him. Stage hounded Dietrich over the final ten laps and was able to get
to the outside of him on several occasions. Dietrich was not to be denied and he went on to capture his first career feature win and a guaranteed starting spot in the Sportsman portion of the "VICTORIA 200" weekend.
Stage was a very close second ahead of Rosa, Jim Gabriel, Jr. and Boyd Carlyle. Sixth through tenth went to Marty Goodwin, Bobby Yeager, Eddie McKernan, Dave Calaman and Bill Deckleman.
The Street Stock feature went right down to the wire. Rick Longstreet and Joe Scofield were looking for their first wins and they were hooked up in a three car battle for the lead with defend- ing track champ Jim Crawn. Both Scofield and Crawn tried every angle around Longstreet but
to no avail. Longstreet scored his first career feature win with Scofield
and Crawn very close behind. Ricky Whitman and Greg McKernan
rounded out the top five. Positions six through ten went to Dave Rumsey, Butch Klinger, Randy Gates, Doug Nelson and Dennis Reilly. The Pure Stock feature saw Chuck Boman go wire to wire to claim his fifth win of the year. He was followed by Reed Maryott,
Michelle Thoman, Bob Lane and Joe Rafferty. They were followed by Mike Stolarcyk, Al Colingwood, Mike Rhodes, Dan Youngs and Bryan Post. COUNTER POINTS...Clapperton was the 1989 Street Stock track champ at the Point... Five drivers have claimed first career Five Mile
