PUCKETT, DECKER, AND SHERMAN GET BIG PENN CAN WINS
Jessup, Victoria 200 by virtue of his victory on Friday at Penn Can Speedway in modfied action. Randy Decker won Susquehanna, PA the Mid-Season Championship in the street stock ranks while Jim Sherman grabbed the late model laurels. All the action took place in front of a capacity crowd.
In the modified action Jim Sanderson (Scranton, PA) and Bill Mead (Heart Lake, PA) swapped the early lead. By lap 10 of the 25 lap event Mead held a comfortabel lead, traild by Bobby Ruckett, Lynn Highhouse (Honesdale, PA), Sanderson, Dick Marcinko (Jessup, PA), and Dale Porreca (Greentown, PA). clicked off Puckett moved his Apple House no. As the laps 41 in on Mead who was obviously loosing the bite in his tires. On lap 15 Puckett dropped to the inside of Bill Mead in turn four and moved into the lead, a lead he would not give up. Mead continued in a strong race to finish second, Butch Tittle (Saylorsburg, PA) drove a strong race to finish third, George Suprick (Clark Summit, PA) had his best run of the season to finish fourth, and Dale Porreca rounded out the top five.
For Puckett it was his third career feature win, second at Penn Can. Puckett got his first Penn Can win in 1988 also in the Victoria 200 Qualifier. Puckett remains the only driver to represent Penn Can in the $10,000 to win event at Fulton, NY in September.
In the action packed street stock division Billy Trego (Moscow, PA) charged into the early lead before a lap was completed. Trego looked solid in the 30 laps race holding off the tough Randy Decker (Stevens Point, PA). For Trego lap 13 would be the end of the strong run, as lapped traffic allowed Decker to move around the young Trego. Trego's bad luck continued when the gas tank on his no. 31 machine came loose and would spell the end for him. As action resumed Sidney Center, Ny driver Mike Clapperton put on a charge to challenge Decker. Clapperton tried inside and out but could not work around the flawless driving of the veteran Decker.
At the flag it was Decker, Clapperton, Mike Frederick (Widnsor, NY), Brian Franko (Clark Summit, PA), and Dave Thomas (Windsor, NY) rounded out the top five. For Decker, it marked the fourth street stock win of the season at Penn Can.
The late models were in competition and Gilbertsville, NY driver Scott Wilson looked to be enroute to his first career feature win. Wilson took the early lead and held on until spinning in turn four on lap 14 of the 15 lap race. Jim Sherman inheritied the lead and grabbed his second win of the season. Following Sherman were Curt Tunilo (Mud Creek, PA), Gary Roberts (Binghamton, NY), John Siedlecky (Binghamton, NY), and Mike Hinds (Montrose, PA). The win was Sherman's (Susquehanna, PA) second of the season. In the modified "B Main" action Bill Tittle of Roseto, PA picked up the win after a race-long battle
with George Watson Jr. of Scranton, PA. NOTES: 48 modifieds, 16 late models, and 28 street stocks enjoyed the smooth Penn Can racing surface...
