LYNN HIGHHOUSE WINS FIRST MODIFIED FEATURE OF THE SEASON AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY
KIRKWOOD, NY...After several attempts this season, Lynn Highhouse of Honesdale, Pennsylvania recorded his first win of the season the Modified Division at Five Mile Point Speedway. Scott Eldred, Mike Frederick and Butch Tittle also notched victories on the one-quarter mile clay oval on Hawkins Manufac- tured Housing Night.
Highhouse started 17th in the 26 car field, but had worked himself into third place by lap 6. On lap 7, Highhouse had moved into second place and battled with Ron Mawson for the top spot. After the caution flag flew on lap 15, when Tony Pepicelli stalled coming out of turn two, Highhouse flew past Mawson on the restart and held off the challenges of Mawson, Doug Worthing, Chuck Akulis and Mike Colsten. Colsten and Akulis battled for second place over the last three laps with Akulis holding the advantage until Colsten nipped the 31 machine crossing the finish line on the last lap.
Dave Doig finished fourth with Worthing, Joe Donahue, Jr... Butch Tittle, Scott Landers, Matt Solomon and Dave Mead rounding out the top ten finishers. Tim Olenski and Scott Landers won the consolation races.
The 4 Cylinder Modifieds ran their feature which had been post- poned since August 19 with Scott Eldred of Vestal recording his eighth feature victory of the season. Current point leader John Janus started fourth in the field and had grabbed the lead before the completion of lap 1 while Eldred had started fifth and moved into the second position by lap three.
The top two drivers battled the remainder of the 20-lap event with Eldred taking the lead on a lap 6 restart and holding off Janus the rest of the way. Janus finished second with Gary Dence, Charlie Webster, Randy Davenport, Tim Vincent, Bruce Detro, Gary Stage, Greg Martindale and Dave Van Buren completing the top ten.
In the Street Stock Feature, Mike Frederick of Windsor picked up his second win of the 1989 season at the Point after holding off point leader Mike Clapperton over the final five laps.
Frederick started 13th when the green flag flew, but moved into the top five by lap 5. Glenn Wilcox held the lead for the first lap with Randy Travis taking the point on lap 2 and holding that advantage until lap 7 when he slid wide in turn two, allowing Frederick and Wilcox to move ahead.
Al MacRabie moved into second place on lap 9 with Clapperton in third until Clapperton took over the second position on lap 14. Clapperton set his sights on Frederick, but was unable to
overtake the leader with Macrabie, Gary Card, Russ Hunsinger, Dan Ballard, Randy Travis, Shelly Stanton, Terry Zacharias and Harry Marvin rounding out the top ten finishers. Russ Hughson, Travis and Frederick were heat winners with
Mark DeVaul claiming the consolation race. In the B & D Trucking Super Clash that featured the seven Modified Feature winners in a special seven lap race, Butch Tittle of Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania grabbed the lead on lap one from the outside pole position and held off Chuck Akulis down the stretch to claim the $200 first prize.
Akulis finished in second place, followed by Doug Worthing, Mike Colsten, Dave Doig, Ron Mawson and Carl Nagel.
