Lee Takes 9th Running of Sheetz McGarvey Memorial at Hidden Valley

May 24, 2024

Clearfield, PA - The Ninth Running of the Shawn “Sheetz” McGarvey Memorial at Hidden Valley Speedway was won by Jon Lee of Summerville as he parked the #5L in the Carnes Equipment victory Lane on Friday Night.

Other winners for the first regular season show include: Gary Little of Clearfield in the Semi Lates, Jimmy Holden of Tiona in the Small Block Modifieds, Brandon Connor of Penfield in the Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks, Tim Steis of St. Mary’s in the Pure Stocks, A.J. Hoffner of Turbotville in the Little’s Drive In Four Cylinders and Ronald Ramsey of Irwin won the Old Skool Stock car class while Cody Schultz of Hyde won in the Old Skool Vintage Modified Class.

The Shawn “Sheetz” McGarvey Memorial saw heat race winners Jon Lee and Denny Fenton on the front row for the 35-lap Super Late Model Main event. As Sam McClellan threw the green flag to get the show underway, Fenton actually had the lead heading into the first turn, but Lee was on the gas and took the lead off turn two and was looking for a win. A quick caution on lap one regrouped the field with Lee still holding the lead. Fenton sat second with Joey Petyak in third. The race went until laps 10 and 11 when the caution waved again. The final 24 laps went non-stop, as Lee began to open up his lead, Fenton held onto second as third through fifth was close but everyone was holding their own when McClellan waved the double checkered flags it was Lee winning his first McGarvey Memorial race over Fenton in second, Brandon Debrakeleer was third Petyak fell to fourth after a late race bobble and Rodney Phillips was fifth.

The Semi Late feature saw Gary Little on the pole with Brad Benton on the outside, and when the green fell it was Benton who shot into the lead as Little fell to third behind BJ Hudson. A lap one caution regrouped the field and when lap two was being scored, Hudson had been able to get by Benton for the lead and Little still sat third. Little was able to get by Benton on lap seven and he was slowly reeling in Hudon when the next pair of cautions waved on lap 10. On a restart Little was able to get the lead from Hudson and Hudson then ended up out of the race as well as Benton. The final 10-laps went non-stop as Little went on to hold off the efforts from Justin Owens who race a close second the rest of the race. At the finish it was Little taking the win over Owens, Luke Hoffner, Dan Gill and Jeremy Lippert. Heat wins went to Little and Benton.

The first of two Father - Son battles was in the Small Block Modifieds as Jimmy Holden and his son Hayden battled for the top spot, ther and the Casher father/son duo of Shannon and Aaron also battled each other in the same race for positions with the Holden dad coming home with the victory of the 20-lap event while the Casher Son beat his dad to the line. The race didn’t start out that way though, as Shannon Casher was giving Jimmy Holden about as much pressure as he could handle, but unfortunately on lap six, Casher caused the only caution in the race when he looped the #93. He tailed the field and relinquished second to the younger Holden, who just could not get the power to slip by his dad. At the finish the top five were Jimmy Holden, Heyden Holden, Trent Ogden, Jeremy Beichner and Shannon Casher. Shannon Casher also won the heat.

The Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks hit the track with Kyle Corah and Fuzzy Fields on the front row, with Fields taking the early lead, then he found the infamous Infield Tire and looped the #28. This put Brandon Connor in the lead as something appeared to break on the Fields car, sending him into Pernell Beimel on the frontstretch, ending both drivers night. Connor was able to hold off Cregen Brady the rest of the race to get the victory as Brady ran a strong second with Jim Challingsworth in third, Corah was fourth and Jim Bloom was fifth. Heat wins went to Corah and Fields.

The Pure Stocks saw first time heat winner Noah Bloom on the pole and Tim Steis on the outside of the 17-car field with Steis taking the lead and Mitch Stiles in second, but the first lap was a difficult one as there were three cautions before the field got under control. Once they went green only one more yellow would slow it, but it was Steis who would lead the whole way for the victory with Stiles hanging onto second, Jake Foradori was third, Bloom was fourth and Cody Wolfe was fifth. Heat wins went to Bloom and Josh Fields, who had engine issues and failed to start.

The Little’s Drive In Four Cylinders saw the second father/son race held, as AJ Hoffner battled his dad, Luke, in the feature but that came later in the event. As the race went green Jason Elensky shot into the lead and was setting a fast pace, when it appeared something broke, sending him into the first turn tire barrier. He tailed the field and gave the lead over to Justin Williamson, who was battling Jimmy Ogden for the lead, as Ogden took control of the lead on lap three. Ogden and Williamson were trading pain, too often, when they ended crashing on lap 9. Ogden was out for the rest of the race while Williamson tailed the field. On the restart AJ Hoffner took the lead and his dad, Luke was a close second and they ran that way to the checkered flag, with AJ taking the win, Luke was second, Jimmy Moyer was third, Elensky worked his way back to fourth and Shawn Williamson was fifth. Heat wins went to Elensky, J. Williamson and AJ Hoffner.

The Old Skool Kool Vintage Modifieds saw Tim Beatty lead the opening two laps before local favorite Cody Schultz was able to grab the lead and eventual win. Bill Stile worked his way to a second place finish over Wally Stock, Brian Lederhouse and Beatty. Stock won the heat.

The Old Skool Kool Stock Cars saw Ronald Ramsey take the win over Brian Lederhouse.
