Danny Creeden “Catches the Beaver” at Brookfield Speedway Sunday
BROOKFIELD, NY – The “beaver” was caught.
Danny Creeden made the haul from Middletown, N.Y., worthwhile with a victory on Sunday evening at Brookfield Speedway. The win was historic as the ground-pounding big-block/small-block Modifieds invaded the Madison County Fairgrounds for the first time since the speedway’s resurrection.
Creeden received $2,000 and the custom “Golden Beaver” trophy following the 30-lap main.
“I’m a short-track guy, this is what I love,” offered a smiling Creeden in Victory Lane. “I was the first one to get the bullhorns (at N.Y.’s Accord Speedway) and I was the first one to get the ‘beaver’ tonight.”
The track’s pit area was packed with 84 race cars on Sunday, with a healthy crowd filing into the covered grandstand for the inaugural event.
Creeden complimented the historic Brookfield venue, which has emerged from closure in recent seasons with steady improvements.
“Great place,” he surmised. “Well lit, great clay, very little dust and no tire wear – you can’t ask for more than that.”
The win salvaged a rough weekend for Creeden after he was sidelined during qualifying on Saturday at Pa.’s Grandview Speedway during the prestigious Freedom 76.
“We left Grandview early last night, not on purpose,” he surmised.
Creeden picked the pole via the redraw and led every lap of the main. The battle for second was heated, however.
Danny Tyler of Cottekill, N.Y., emerged with the runner-up spot after swapping the position with both teenager Gordon Smith and Blaine Klinger.
Tyler, Walton, N.Y. 's Klinger, Smith, of Oxford, N.Y., and Nick Nye of Groton, N.Y., completed the front five.
Heat winners were Brett Tonkin and Tyler for the 15 Modifieds on hand.
After securing his first career win at Brookfield in July, Matthew Richardson went back-to-back in the Scenic View Campground Sportsman 25-lap main, earning $700. Richardson narrowly edged Randy Green in a spirited battle for the lead throughout the main.
Green, a southeastern New York invader, placed second, followed by Klinger – who competed in both the Modified and Sportsman divisions – Butchie Irwin and David Hackett Jr.
Abrams Press Slingshots saw Tyler Fallis fend off teammate Brett Putnam in the Allstar ranks, while Blake Banek topped the Junior contingent in the 15-lap main.
A wild White’s Welding & Custom Cutting 20-lap Four Cylinder event went to Kamrin Krause (Dual Cam), while Jamie Warner was credited with the Single Cam victory.
John Holmes earned $500 from the 50-lap Enduro nightcap, which featured 32 starters. The event went from start to finish without stoppage.
Racing continues at Brookfield on Saturday, Oct. 25 with ‘Spooktacular Saturday’ featuring the Scenic View Campground Sportsman, Anderson Towing & Recovery Pro Stocks, Hustle the Highway Series 600 Modifieds, Abrams Press Slingshots, White’s Welding & Custom Cutting Four Cylinders and a 50-lap Enduro.
