JACK JOHNSON WINS FONDA SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP

Fonda, N.Y. Starting 13th in the starting field in a modified feature might be bad luck for some drivers but not for Schenectady's Jack Johnson.

The veteran Johnson took the green flag in that pos-Ition in the "Spring Championship 100 lap event at Fonda Speedway Wednesday night but when the last lap had been completed, the veteran Schenectady wheel man had picked up still another victory in this one of his most successful seasons.

Jack has now won six of 11 features at the Track of Champions in 1980 and his Wednesday victory came right on the heels of another big win for him in the "Northeast Showdown" at Rolling Wheels Raceway the night before.

But in order to win Wednesday's Spring Champion-ship race at Fonda, Jack had to wait until the 24th lap to move into a commanding lead

Lou Lazzaro of Utica started on the pole and was the leader for the first 20 laps of the 100 lapper. But Lou developed suspension problems in his modified and lost the advantage to Gibby Fountain of West Kingston, R. I. on tap No. 21

Three laps later, Jahnson overtook Fountain and steadily increased his margin as the race wore on. John-son lapped every car in the starting field with the exception of the eventual second place finisher, Alan Johnson of Clifton Springs

Fountain finished third followed by Ray Dalmata of Gloversville and bob Savoie of Amsterdam

Heat victories went to Mike Romano of Johnstown, Bob Rees of Charleston, Ed Pieniszek of Crescent and George Sifo of Schenectady.
