Ward Dominates RWR World Series 75 Mr. DIRTcar 358 Championship
Posted Saturday, Sep 22, 2007
Elbridge, NY — September 21, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director
Pat Ward survived a massive 15-car pile-up, then put a big heap of hurt on the rest of the field as he went on to score his first Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series victory of the season in convincing fashion on Friday to kick off the 21st Annual World Series of DIRT Track Racing Weekend at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.
Ward led the second half of the race to post his second career Small-Block tour victory at Rolling Wheels, out-distancing runner-up John Lazore, Vic Coffey, Jimmy Phelps and Pete Bicknell in the 99.3 The Wall World Series 75.
“I was told a long time ago that if you can’t draw good, you better be able to drive good,” recalled Ward after collecting $3,000 for his fifth career Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified tour triumph steering the LJL Racing no. 42p Gypsum Express, Ltd./Bicknell entry. “I knew it was going to be tough tonight after a poor draw but fortunately things worked out. It was too bad that accident knocked out a lot of guys, but even before that we were coming on pretty strong.”
Ward chased Matt Sheppard across the stripe to finish second in the second qualifying heat to help sort out the field of 42 drivers that signed in for round number eight of the 13-race Small-Block Series. But when it came time for the customary pre-race draw among the top-12 heat race finishers, the Genoa, N.Y, veteran selected “11” to fill inside row six on the 30-car starting grid.
Outside pole-sitter Coffey out-dragged front row partner Lazore to lead the opening circuit on the fast 5/8-miler, with Sheppard, Billy Decker and Steve Paine setting the early pace at the front of the pack. Lazore found the high side to his liking and the Hogansburg, N.Y. pilot inched by Coffey to assume his first lead on lap seven. Starting 10th in the original line-up, Brett Hearn was up to fifth by lap 15 as the leaders encountered heavy traffic with Ward right behind.
North country runner Bill Gill slowed in turn two to cause the first yellow to fly on lap 20 and just three more times around the caution lights reappeared when Sheppard’s no. 44s Magee Transportation Special suffered a broken drive-shaft to end his night. It was the lap 24 restart that brought the most attention as the turn three mishap included more than a dozen cars with seven unable to continue.
On that second race restart, Hearn attempted to thread the needle between high-running Decker and Coffey on the low side, yet contact with Decker midway down the back chute broke the rear-end assembly on the Vinny Salerno-owned no. 4 Four Star-WLR Construction-Kruger/TEO ride and sent Decker back across the track directly in front of the on-rushing pack. Car after car then came together in turn three and by the time the mangled machinery was untangled more than a dozen cars were accounted for sitting sideways, backwards and up and down with Rookie John Guarino and Capital District chauffeur Ronnie Johnson eventually pointing skyward.
Done for the night were Decker and Hearn, Johnson and Guarino along with Roy Tarbell, Lance Willix II and Mr. DIRTcar 358 points runner-up Carey Terrance. Returning trackside were Danny O’Brien, Alan and Danny Johnson, Mark Smoke, Mike Adderley, Dan Vauter, Pierre Dagenais and current Mr. DIRT Small-Block points leader Mario Cair.
The track safety crew required 45 minutes to clear up the biggest Series wreck of the new millennium, and back under green flag conditions Lazore once again showed the way with Coffey, Ward, Paine and Pat O’Brien in tow. Gill stopped for a second time in turn two and with caution laps now counting, Ward nosed ahead high around Lazore as the leaders completed lap 36 and proceeded to open a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Clair slid high off the track to necessitate the fourth caution period on lap 37 to erase Ward’s nearly straightaway advantage. Yet Ward never flinched as he regrouped to build up a seemingly insurmountable 5.5-second lead with still 25 laps left with 19 cars still running.
With three Series wins under his belt in ’07, tour points chaser Danny O’Brien looped low between turns three and four ton lap 53 to cause another slowdown before Clair suffered a shredded right-rear tire to force out the sixth and final caution period on the 62nd circuit. Ward was no match for the rest of the field as he opened up a 6.5-second margin of victory over the remaining 10 laps with a dozen cars scored on the lead lap.
“I had a great car tonight that could go anywhere I wanted,” said Ward, who bettered his runner-up tally registered in this same race run in 2004. His lone Mr. DIRTcar Series triumph at Rolling Wheels was logged just weeks later on October 8 of Super DIRT Week XXXIV on the infamous Moody Mile. “I was really good on the bottom and knew I was running down Brett early on. Fortunately, we were able to take advantage of that big accident and fast enough to keep it out front when it counted most.”
Lazore settled for a solid second-place finish after leading his first laps of the season. “I think Tim (Fuller, first string team driver) would’ve probably won with this car tonight,” figured Lazore, after leading 29 laps on his way to finishing second. “We couldn’t get a restart to go for us tonight. I tried low on that restart just searching for a lane and (Ward) got me and I couldn’t take anything back.”
After leading the first half-dozen laps, Coffey held on for the show position to leave room for further improvement in the coming weeks. “We just took too much gear out and that was the biggest difference,” said Coffey, who was buckled into the no. 7c Flexcare-Cerrone Safety First/Bicknell entry normally driven by Western New York pilot Scott Kerwin at Ransomville Speedway. “I feel fortunate to miss that big accident so this is a good way to start out the weekend. Whoever took care of the track and however they did it, I hope they’ll be back tomorrow, it was a great track out there tonight.”
Hearn turned the fast time in trials with a one-lap best clocking of 20.778 seconds (108.288 mph) while the top four drivers of Ward, Lazore, Coffey and Phelps earned guaranteed starting positions in the ITT Corporation-Goulds Pumps 358-Modified Championship scheduled for Oct. 6 of Super DIRT Week XXXVI at the NYS Fairgrounds.
Racing in the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series takes a brief break before returning for four consecutive nights of extra-distance activity during the annual Super DIRT Week extravaganza in the Salt City. Can-Am Motorsports Park kicks off the rare quadrupleheader on Wednesday, October 3 followed by successive shows at Brewerton Speedway (Oct. 4) and Rolling Wheels (Oct. 5) before closing out with the headline ITT Corporation-Goulds Pumps 150-lap ‘Salute to the Troops’ Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series Championship race on the Syracuse Mile.
SKIDMARKS
All eyes gazed wide-open as the familiar hauler of ‘Barefoot’ Bob McCreadie arrived late at Rolling Wheels. DIRTcar Racing NorthEast’s all-time popular driver wasn’t ready to compete, however, as his legendary no. 9 Kinney Drugs/Bicknell ride was locked inside waiting for Pierre Dagenais to climb aboard the following day in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Budweiser Triple 50s. A year ago son Tim McCreadie was the last to driver to compete in his father’s car in autumn at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway before suffering a blown transmission in the Enders-powered machine. On Friday night Bob’s crew was also in the pits helping out Dagenais with his latest tour effort…..With round #8 of the 13-race Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series in the record book, Frenchman Mario Clair has opened up a 69-point cushion over Carey Terrance in the current standings. “We’re just taking every race one by one, some of these tracks are brand new to us,” said Clair through a translator as the St-Edmond, Quebec driver prepared his no. 22 JDL-Motel Drummond/Bicknell entry for his first-ever Modified race at Rolling Wheels. Prior to the 2007 season, the younger brother of Gino Clair and son of still active driver Rene Clair raced Sportsman cars before at Rolling Wheels and Autodrome Edelweiss, and just spectated at events held at Lebanon Valley Speedway. “I’ve always dreamed of running a Big-Block but my tracks Granby and Drummond dropped them a few years back. It’s just too expensive to travel to the states every weekend so this might be my only chance to follow the whole tour, maybe a once in a lifetime deal. We did good throughout the year so we’re giving it a try and see how far we can go”…..Danny O’Brien is following a similar strategy in his bid to collect a first-ever overall Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship, although his older brother Pat O’Brien is a four-time title-holder of DIRTcar NorthEast’s highest Small-Block honor. “I’m pretty much on my own so I’m going to follow the Series until I run out of money,” declared O’Brien, who captured recent Series victories at Edelweiss, Can-Am and Brockville to elevate him into third-place in the Mr. DIRTcar point standings aboard the no. 17d Pat’s Radiator-1000 Islands RV Center-Stover Bus Line/Bicknell machine. “I m know most of the tracks so its just a matter of getting a little more good luck. We’ll just see how far this whole deal can take us”…..At the age of 17 years, Clarkstown South High School senior Johnny Guarino from Nanuet, N.Y. ---20 minutes north of New York City--- hasn’t logged nearly as many laps as his closest competitors yet the CNY Mini-Sprint graduate hopes to gain the needed experience in the coming years. “I want to do whatever I can to become a full-time racer,” divulged Guarino, who started racing at age 11 and picked up his first career DIRTcar 358-Modified win this year at Orange County Fair Speedway in his rookie season. At the age of 15 he scored a victory in a CNY Mini-Sprint A-Main at Cayuga County Fair Speedway in 2005. “I’d like to find a way to make a living at it but I’m still looking forward to going to college first. Something in aeronautics, maybe be an air traffic controller, that’s something I could learn to do and keep racing”…..Of the 42 drivers signed in on Friday, 19 were registered for their first Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series event of the season. That list included a dozen that qualified for the 75-lap main with winner Ward, Coffey and Phelps the most noteworthy tour newcomers in ’07.
