Johnson & Fuller Take Double 53s At Cayuga County
Posted Sunday, Aug 19, 2007
Weedsport, NY — August 19, 2007 – Tom Skibinski, Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series PR Director
Former Weedsport track champions Danny Johnson and Tim Fuller bested stellar fields en route to $3,000 victories on Sunday in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series as they split DIRT Hall of Fame Classic Big-Block Modified Twin 53s presented by Owasco Beverage, Budweiser and Labatt at Cayuga County Fair Speedway.
Johnson took advantage of the first yellow flag on lap 37 to erase a 2.5-second advantage by leader Jimmy Phelps, then swept around the team Troyer driver three laps later and held off a late bid by Advance Auto Parts Series points leader Brett Hearn to score the popular victory steering the Thompson Motorsports no. 27J Chiefs Tobacco & Gas machine. Phelps maintained third despite a lap 52 caution period bunching the field, with Steve Paine and Fuller filling out the front-five.
“I didn’t think I’d get by Jimmy tonight but the caution got me on his bumper and I just muscled my way through there,” said Johnson, following both his fourth win of the year in the Advance Auto Parts Series and at Cayuga County. “This was a real good run for our team and I can’t thank Dave (Thompson) enough for getting us here in victory lane.”
Vic Coffey out-dragged pole-sitter Steve Paine and took command early with fourth-place starter Johnson in the hunt from lap one. Phelps joined the fray with 10 laps complete and the open-wheel veterans jockeyed three-wide until the H&H Motorsports no. 98H Mohawk Northeast-New England Race Fuels/Troyer driver snatched the lead away from Coffey low of out of turn two on lap 14. At the halfway mark, Phelps had opened up a comfortable margin with Johnson regaining the runner-up spot and Hearn charging into third ahead of Coffey and Paine.
Cayuga County weekly runner Tom Juhl slowed on the front stretch to finally force out the first caution on lap 37 and just two laps later turn one contact resulted in Alan Johnson sitting sideways to require a second slowdown. Younger brother Danny seized the moment on the ensuing restart, grazing the turn two wall up high on consecutive trips around before taking his first lead of the night out of the fourth corner as the leaders crossed the line to complete lap 40.
Hearn grabbed second from Phelps on the lap 42 restart after Steve Hulsizer came to a stop low in turn and had one more chance to surprise Johnson when Shannon Whaley vaulted over the turn three wall to set up a lap 52 restart. But when the checkered flag flew on the next circuit, Johnson had successfully sewn up his 65th career Advance Auto Parts Series win while Hearn’s only consolation was extending his tour points lead to 30 over Fuller.
“Jimmy seemed to have a really good car tonight and I really didn’t think I’d get by him, I just kept digging,” added Johnson, who proceeded to draw the #8 in victory lane which inverted the front-four rows to start the second 53-lapper. “I just have to thank my owner and the crew for giving me the equipment to get me here. I’m just ecstatic being able to get another win out here, everything just came together at the right time.”
When the green flag flew to begin round two, front row starter Billy Dunne out-gunned pole-sitter Justin Haers to set the early pace in the 53-lap nightcap. Fourth-place starter Fuller needed 23 laps to track down Dunn before scoring his second Advance Auto Parts Series win in two nights to pull ahead of Brett Hearn by 10 markers in the tour point standings through 20 races. Billy Decker settled for third-place in front of Phelps and Haers.
“We really haven’t been that good here since ’04 and ’05, last year was kind of mediocre so to come in here against the series competition and pull out a win is really great,” said Fuller, the 2004-05 Big-Block points champion at CCFS, who now has 18 feature wins in the Weedsport recordbook. “This series is just so hard to keep everything going and keep up with the maintenance and all the travel. If it wasn’t for John Lazore and the whole crew I couldn’t come out here and have fun.”
Drama unfolded even before the race got underway as Danny Johnson failed to fire on his own in the pits and was relegated to the rear. He voiced his displeasure to chief starter Dave Farney on the front straightaway as the capacity crowd looked on. But once the green lights were turned on, Johnson bumped and banged his way to the front and with half the race gone was already contending for a top-five position.
Early on, Dunn set a consistent pace with Fuller, Decker, Haers and Phelps keeping the leader in their sights. The night came to sudden halt for Hearn when hard contact was made with Matt Sheppard and the first yellow flag was displayed after Coffey and Mitch Gibbs locked together on the back chute as the end result. Johnson was already breathing heavy fire on the field before the lap eight restart, blasting into 15th after picking up the pack in 28th-place following his pre-race setback.
Back under green, Fuller continued to hound rookie tour follower Dunn and remained relentless until forging the final lead change low out of turn as he used Juhl as a pick on lap 23. How far Johnson could go before his momentum fizzled out was the only question left unanswered as the lap counter clicked on. The ‘Doctor’ slipped past Paine on lap 34 yet was unable to join the battle for fourth between Haers and Phelps in the closing stages. Phelps finally cleared Haers low across the line on lap 47 and a half-dozen more times around it was Fuller celebrating in the winner’s circle for a second straight night.
“We’ve got a good team and have been at this for a while now so we know what it takes,” added Fuller, who moved back to the top of the Advance Auto Parts Series point standings for the first time since Hearn overtook him at Cornwall on July 22. “Billy (Dunn) has really been a burr in my side lately. He’s been running good and learning, that’s what it takes to go out on the tour. I took my lumps, took my share of getting beat by all the good guys….the Johnsons, McCreadie, they all beat up on me when I started. He’s good and he’s gonna get better, and the only way you’re gonna get better is to run against the best and that’s what you’ve got here.”
Dunn posted his first-ever top-five in Advance Auto Parts Series competition the previous night at Can-Am and followed up with easily his most convincing performance of the season in the Cayuga County finale. “If I can keep up with Tim then I’m really doing something,” stated a most modest Dunn, 23, who purchased his first DIRTcar Modified from Fuller following Super DIRT Week XXXI in preparation of his rookie season in 2003. He currently ranks 12th in points despite missing two of the opening 20 extra-distance events board the no. 49 Number One Speed-Fast Lube of Watertown/Bicknell mount. “We just started to get out on a little roll lately figuring out our program a bit better. Being out on the tour has picked up our entire program 100%, everywhere we go now we seem to have a top-10 to 5th-place car and every once in a while we can knock off a front-five like here.”
Dunn’s 7th-place finish in the opener earned him preferred starter status in the prestigious Rite Aid 200 Championship race on Oct. 7 of Super DIRT Week XXXVI at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse while Haers top-five run in the nightcap also gave him a preferred spot in DIRTcar NorthEast’s biggest event.
“We’ve been fairly consistent, we needed to do better earlier tonight in that first race but its so tough sledding. We were a little bit off tonight and it showed,” said Decker, who followed up a sixth-place effort in the opener with third in the second main event steering the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int'l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell entry. “The team works hard night after night, we’ll just keep plugging away and put or best foot forward and let the chips fall where they may. This (Series) is the type of grind that if you’re going good, things really go good and if you’re going bad it can be a real long haul. We’ve been down that road long enough so you come out every night thinking it’s a brand new race and hopefully we’ll have a good one. Winning and working on the car is about all that keeps the morale up this time of year,” Decker added.
In its second straight Advance Auto Parts Series stop, Cayuga County Fair Speedway stages another pair of 53-lappers on Sunday, September 2. The twin-bill in Weedsport over the extended Labor Day Weekend is followed the next day by the 36th Annual Robert N. Petrocci Memorial twin 50-lap Big-Block Modified main events slated for Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.

SKIDMARKS
2007 Tour Travelers: For the third straight year tour officials once again signed up the best Big-Block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series show. The star-studded group of drivers accepting contract extensions are reigning Mr. DIRTcar points king and winningest Big-Block Modified driver Alan Johnson, current Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series points leader Tim Fuller, all-time DIRTcar Modified win leader Brett Hearn, five-time DIRTcar NorthEast Driver of the Year Danny Johnson, ‘04 Mr. DIRTcar titlist Gary Tomkins, third-year tour follower Jimmy Phelps, Canandaigua Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, New Egypt Speedway points leader Matt Sheppard, full-time tour follower Dale Planck, Keystone State open-wheel veteran Frank Cozze, four-time Super DIRT Week Rite Aid 200 champion Billy Decker and Central New York talent Justin Hears.
Veteran Field For Cayuga County: The Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series returned to Cayuga County after the DIRT Hall of Fame Classic was postponed due to rain during Memorial Day without any first-time Series drivers signing in pitside. However, Rob Bellinger, Mike Bowman, Eldon Payne Jr., Vic Coffey, Shannon Whaley, Jeremy Smith, Steve Hulsizer and Ryan Phelps were newcomers to the event after missing out back on May 27.
More Eyes On Phelps: 2007 has been a break out year for Big-Block Modified driver Jimmy Phelps and his position atop the Cayuga County points standings is no surprise to the opposition with four wins to his credit this season. Thus, his stature at CCFS on this occasion for the first time was one of favorite going into an Advance Auto Parts Series event. To add more drama to the scenario, the Baldwinsville, NY pilot was entered in the white H&H Motorsports no. 98h Mohawk Northeast-New England Race Fuels/Troyer tour ride instead of his familiar red no. 99j J&B Installations/Troyer car seen on Sunday nights in Weedsport. “I know we have just about the same set-up with both cars and the motors are fairly close too,” said Phelps, 32, who finished 7th in last year’s Hall of Fame Classic when it was 100 laps in distance. “The competition has been good but when the travelers come into town it just raises the bar all that much more. I feel real comfortable at Cayuga County and have been real good so far at Rolling Wheels. In the next four races there’s a lot that can happen in a very short time. At Cayuga County I know what I’m looking for as in how the car should feel but the other guys know what they need too. Nobody can really explain the tire deal and everybody has spent countless hours trying to figure it out. A lot will depend on who gets to the front first and hits the right combination at the end.”
Series Rookie Dunn Having Fun: Coming into the 2007 season Billy Dunn had scored a pair of feature wins at Can-Am and Thunder Alley near his north country home and added another checkered flag this year at Cayuga County. Dunn is yet to reach victory lane on the demanding Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series, yet a pair of top-five finishes in the past two extra-distance events already have provided a winning formula to build on in the months that lie ahead. “Our goal used to be to start on the pole in a consi, now we got a top-10 and just had our first front-five so we’re already way ahead of anything we could’ve planned for,” said Dunn, whose father Norm Dunn, Number One Speed proprietor, owns the operation. “To get a fifth at can-Am was really rewarding considering we’re probably one of the least funded teams following the whole tour. We keep bringing a basic set-up to each track knowing we’ll be decent and then just go from there trying to fine tune it.
“We might have done even better at Can-am but we found out at the end of the night that we broke a torque arm in the first one. I thought it was something internal, I could feel it, but still did decent in both runs and it once we found out the problem it wasn’t hard to fix. We’re time trialing good just about everywhere we go now, though Can-Am was the first night we really “raced” out there. I hadn’t been to the track since early in the year so that’s the best we ever ran there on a slick track. Hopefully, we can continue to improve, there’s a lot to learn on this Series and we’re just taking everything one race at a time and liking every bit of it so far.”
Pot Holes: Company officials from Aramark Uniform Services were in attendance, as were those from Dig Safely New York as the Advance Auto Parts Series event doubled as an F.X. Caprara Car Companies/Dig Safely New York ‘Five Star’ Series event for DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds at Cayuga County on Sunday. Led by team “captain” Tony Lema, Aramark reps not only took in the action from high atop the VIP Tower, they went trackside to compete in a special 5-lap match race to the delight of the capacity crowd. Larry Bishop was on hand from Dig Safely NY…..Dale Planck just about done with his second no. 77x Bicknell car that he hopes to debut in a shake-down session Saturday at Fulton Speedway…..Steve Paine has had a couple cars at his disposal in 2007 and on Sunday entered his regular orange no. 7x Oz car in the Advance Auto Parts Series showdown at the fairgrounds. His yellow Troyer machine is saved for Saturday night competition at Canandaigua with yet another typically reserved for the traveling tour…..Sean Beardsley, still without his customary no. 18 Town Mechanical ride after suffering a blown motor a couple weeks back at CCFS, was provided a ride by Jeff Isabell in his no. 7j JIR Motorsports TEO car for the night…..
