A.J. Sweeps Labor Day Weekend With Advance Auto Parts Series Petrocci Memorial Victory At Rolling Wheels.

Mon - September 04, 2006 -- Rolling Wheels Raceway

Elbridge, NY

Author: Tom Skibinski, DIRT NorthEast PR Director

When Alan Johnson climbed out of his car in victory lane Monday night it was deja-vous all over again for the Phelps, N.Y. driver. Just one day after dusting the field at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, Johnson produced his second straight Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series victory in nearly identical fashion across town at Rolling Wheels Raceway. DIRT MotorSports NorthEast’s all-time big-block Modified feature winner set another track speed record, won his heat race qualifier, then led more than half the distance to score his second career win in the 35th Annual Robert N. Petrocci Memorial at the popular Elbridge oval. His latest $6,000 tour triumph was undoubtedly the most significant of the 2006 campaign as it guaranteed him a starting position no worse than seventh in the Eckerd 200 Championship scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 8 during Super DIRT Week. Tim Fuller settled for runner-up honors ahead of consolation round qualifier Gary Tomkins, Advance Auto Parts SDS points runner-up Billy Decker and Justin Haers, who also earned a guaranteed starting spot in the Eckerd 200 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

“It seems like its been awhile since we’ve won here so this obviously feels pretty good right now,” said Johnson, 48, who last reached the Rolling Wheels’ winner’s circle during the Independence day holiday in 2003 prior to scoring his 35th career victory on Labor Day. He placed 16th in the final RWR point standings last season with just one top-10 finish in four starts. “It’s great to be competitive here again, this car just seems to get better and better every race and makes you want to run it again and again.”

Johnson’s closest challengers in the 2006 points races chased ‘A.J. Slideways’ around the track once again and for the second successive night had little to offer the eight-time Rolling Wheels points king. The ‘Fast Track’ lived up to its name as Johnson was the fifth car to run under the clocks and scorched the 5/8-miler in a time of 20.029 sec. (112.337 mph). Wheeling the potent Jeff Rudalavage/Tony Laughing-owned no. 14J NativePoker.Com-WPC Associates,Inc.-Pine Line Auto Sales/Bicknell machine, he easily erased the previous track mark of 20.146 sec. set by Tim Fuller in July of ‘04. “The crew just hit it right on the nose again,” boasted Johnson, on the heels of his fourth fast time in the past seven tour stops. “But it will be another guessing game with the track and 100 laps is a long way to go around this place.” Eight laps was a much shorter distance and Johnson returned to win his preliminary event before selecting fourth in the pre-race draw among the top-12 qualifiers from six heat races.

Young guns Ryan Phelps and Justin Haers shared front row on the all-star grid that expanded to 31 cars with the addition of provisional starter Jimmy Phelps. Continuing the riches to rags saga in the aftermath of Phelps’ dramatic Advance Auto Parts victory the Wednesday before at Brewerton Speedway, the H&H Motorsports ’07 Troyer mount was patched together after rolling over in the Cayuga County finale. Sixth in the last heat and 12th-place (last) in the final consi after timing 36th forced him to re-fire in the rear when the annual century grind took the green.

With overcast skies prevailing throughout the day, heavy track conditions produced near record speeds throughout the show although contact among the title race contenders was inevitable as three-wide maneuvers proved to be the norm in the early stages. The opening circuit was yellow-flagged as Pennsylvania invader Rick Laubach got crossed up low in turn four then collected Chad Brachmann and Jeff Isabell as he slid in their path before parking sideways. Only Isabell was lost for the duration while Brett Hearn made a surprise appearance pitside without losing a lap. After five laps were completed Haers ran ahead of Decker, Matt Sheppard, Ryan Phelps and Alan Johnson. “I don’t know why but we always seem to drop off the pace on the restarts,” noted Johnson, who filled the starting line-up in third at CCFS before getting stranded in fourth he first third of the Sunday’s race. “I guess the car just isn’t good on cold tires.”

While it took 46 laps for Johnson to heat up in the AAP Modified main at Weedsport, the veteran pilot found the needed traction low in turns one and two five laps earlier on Monday to secure the point for good. He initially out-muscled Phelps for fourth on lap 11 then improved to third when Matt Sheppard lost the spot as he contacted the lapped car of Brett Tonkin on lap 17 which brought out the second caution period. Just four laps later Jack Johnson slowed to force another yellow following a three-wide encounter on the back chute involving low running Tomkins and middle man Dale Planck. Less than 10 laps later Johnson had wrestled the runner-up position from Decker and set his sights on the 26 year-old driver of the Haers Bros. black no. 3 Phelps Cement Products-SMV Motorsports-Jeff Jolly Masonry/Bicknell entry.

Chad Phelps parked his mount in the middle of turn to bring out the fourth yellow flag as Haers led a parade of experienced open-wheel veterans that included past Mr. DIRT champions Johnson, Decker, Fuller and first consi winner Tomkins. Two-time RWR points champion Brett Hearn ran 13th but that proved unlucky as he suddenly pulled to the infield on the lap 36 restart with his trusty Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-BPG Racing-Kruger-WLR/TEO ride coming to a stop inside turn two with a broken driveshaft. A quick caution was thrown just one lap later when Vic Coffey suffered a shredded right-rear tire on his own no. 32C Sweeteners Plus-CME,Inc./Bicknell ride to bring an end to his night. It was on the lap 41 restart that Johnson ducked low entering the first corner and by the time the lead duo rounded turn two had taken command of a race he seemed destined to win from lap one. “I never saw if Justin had a left-front going down, I was too busy looking at my own front tires the whole race,” Johnson said post-race.

The second half of the race went just as planned for the Native Poker personnel, with Johnson able to build up big advantages every time a yellow flag flew. Chuck Bower (lap 65), Frank Cozze (lap 81) and Tom Sears Jr. (lap 92) retired in order under caution with mechanical problems as Fuller, Tomkins, Decker and Haers were left to fill front-five positions. Contact between Bobby Varin and Jeff Brownell Jr. in turn three collected Danny Johnson and extended the distance one circuit beyond the prescribed 100-lap distance. Fuel consumption was an afterthought as Johnson mirrored Sunday’s mastery of the Modified field to score his sixth Advance Auto Parts SDS victory in 19 starts and boost his career tour total to 45 which ranks him fourth all-time. He extended his Series points lead from 56 to 71 points in the process with just a half-dozen races remaining.

“We made a lot of changes since last night and had to chase the track a lot today,” said Johnson, who improved his career DIRT mark to 344 big-block feature wins since DIRT MotorSports was established in the Bicentennial. The second-generation driver is the only one to score at least one Modified victory every season since DIRT’s debut in 1976. “The track was a lot tackier than usual so we were guessing with the set-up all night. The team just keeps making the right changes when it matters most and here we are again. Winning races never gets boring this time of year.”

Despite a left-front tire turning soft in the closing stages, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT points king Fuller held on to finish eight car-lengths back in second --- one position better than last year’s weather-plagued event that also tested both man and machine. “I saw the tire going down so we got lucky tonight staying up front near the end,” said Fuller, 38, who was among just 13 of 31 drivers to see the final checkered flag with each completing all 101 laps. The no. 19 JL Motorsports(Native Poker)-Chiefs Tobacco&Gas-G&R Auto Parts/TEO machine has carried the Edwards, N.Y. pilot to six top-three finishes in the last nine Advance Auto Parts outings. “Second is still pretty good in this field. Just about any other year it might’ve been a first but there’s Alan again. We just keep rolling on, we’re still coming along and there’s a lot of big races to go. Alan’s having one of those years, all we can do is move on and get ready for the next one.”

For the second straight night defending Petrocci Memorial champion Tomkins was relegated to the consolation round where he came away with victory before rallying to third in the main event. “I just need to qualify better,” straight-lined Tomkins, 40, who started 22nd on Sunday before charging into fifth in the final rundown. The Clifton Springs, NY speedster pulled Doug Dulen’s no. 1 Honeoye Auto Parts-Pillsbury/Bicknell entry into the 19th starting slot at RWR. “I can’t complain, third is great. I knew we were down on motor out here so we managed to make the best of it. I didn’t want to tighten up the car too much after the heat, being more afraid I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere early on come feature time. We passed a lot of cars and finished in one piece, that’s plenty to be thankful for tonight.”

SKIDMARKS

2006 Tour 12: For the second straight year DIRT MotorSports™ has signed up the best big-block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series show. The list of a dozen contracted drivers (in alphabetical order) includes popular Pennsylvania pilot Frank Cozze, four-time and defending Eckerd 200 titlist Billy Decker, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller, all-time Advance Auto Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn, DIRT’s winningest big-block Modified driver Alan Johnson, five-time DIRT MotorSports NE Driver of the Year Danny Johnson, Canandaigua (NY) Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, second-year tour mainstay Jimmy Phelps, first-year full-time Series follower Dale Planck, rising star Matt Sheppard, former Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins and 30-year open-wheel veteran Pat Ward.

Paying Tribute: The Petrocci Memorial has become a staple in area car racing during the past four decades. The big 5/8-mile layout was first mapped out by the late Bob Petrocci, once a competitor himself at neighboring Weedsport Speedway. One year following the August 17, 1969 opener, Petrocci lost his life in a freak accident while spectating at nearby Spencer Speedway in Williamson, N.Y. Sons Robert,Jr. and Donald inherited promotional duties and eventually signed up the second weekly track to join DIRT founder Glenn Donnelly and his fledgling motorsports operation. Rolling Wheels ran regularly every Friday night with big-block Modifieds and full-fender Late Models until ultimately trimming the summer schedule in 1982. Today, some of the greatest events are staged at the popular Elbridge speedplant. Canadian Terry Edwards won that Sunday afternoon August grand-opener and 386 Modified features have been contested since.

Johnson Journal: The numbers continue to add up for Alan Johnson following his three wins in four nights on the Central New York DIRT circuit. With his latest first-place trophies at Brewerton (Fri.), Cayuga County (Sun.) and Rolling Wheels (Mon.), A.J. has pushed his 2006 DIRT NorthEast-best win total to 15 in big-block Modified competition. Those same three track account for a half-dozen of those wins with 134 DIRT BB career victories recorded between CCFS (57), BRW (42) and RWR (35). He also recently clinched his seventh season points championship in Weedsport and netted his fourth Brewerton title in the past five years. He stands some 30 markers behind opening day Rolling Wheels feature winner Billy Decker with just one points event remaining in three weeks.

Fast Track Firsts: The 35th Petrocci Memorial attracted 62 drivers including 25 of the top 30 point-getters. Of those drivers signed up for Rolling Wheels’ Ferris Industries-Budweiser/Owasco Beverage-Finger Lakes Radio Group-Stafford Auto Group Modified marathon, seven first-time entries joined the open-wheel roster for the first time this season including Canandaigua regular Eldon Payne Jr., Fonda runners Mike Fusco and Ron George Jr., Can-Am Sportsman graduate Scott Webb, ’04 Cayuga County Sportsman points champion Bob Henry Jr., Western New Yorker John Pfeffer and Central New York traveler Terry Knoblock. None of the drivers qualified for the century grind as six heats and three consis were required to trim down the field.

Knoblock’s Modified entry carried no. 14 with the name Troyer emboldened on the side panels for good reason as it was an ’04 copy designed by Alan Johnson himself and Troyer head Billy Colton, according to Knoblock who purchased the frame and body from Jimmy Phelps in the off-season a year and a half earlier. Knoblock has been bouncing around this season between Can-Am, Fonda and Thunder Mountain in his own #109 Bicknell car and just last week at Fulton brought out the Troyer/Johnson creation, one positioning the motor further back between the rails.

Middletown Mayhem: A number of Orange County Fair Speedway regulars made the haul northwest to Rolling Wheels, most hungry for competition after rain had cancelled the past three Saturday cards at the historic Middletown, N.Y. oval. Two drivers left for home early after a heat race crash that made the highlight reel. On the opening lap of heat #4 second-generation pilot Donnie Wilson slid over the cushion exiting turn four and bounced off the front straightaway cement wall right in the path of Jim Secor Jr. The no. 734 TEO machine of Secor got sideways and dug in deep on the homestretch, performing two complete rolls before coming to rest in a pile of twisted sheet metal just shy of the starter’s stand. Both drivers climbed out of their vehicle while Secor was assisted into the trackside ambulance as a pre-cautionary measure. No injuries were reported.

RWR “Drags” Out ’06 Agenda: A brand new event has been penciled in at Rolling Wheels Raceway on September 9. The upcoming Saturday “Late Night” Street Drags special will offer single elimination dashes for Domestics, Imports, Cycles and 4-Wheelers with Shine-n-Show competition, db Drags and a Burnout Showdown headlining the evening agenda. Rolling Wheels’ gates open Sat., Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and drags pull off the line at 8 o’clock sharp. The entry fee for every event participant is $15.00 with the general admission ticket price set at $5.00 for all.
