Alan Johnson Scored 2nd Straight Series Win In First-Ever Brockville Event
Tue - July 04, 2006 -- Brockville Ontario Speedway
Brockville, ON
Author: Tom Skibinski, DIRT NorthEast PR Director
Alan Johnson has been writing chapters in the DIRT MotorSports NorthEast history book for the past three decades and Tuesday night he added another page by capturing the first-ever Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series event staged at Brockville Ontario Speedway. Johnson’s second straight tour triumph in the Coca-Cola 100 to close out the Fourth of July holiday north of the border was worth $6,000 and vaulted him from fifth to second in the current Advance Auto Parts SDS standings through eight point races.
“The guys have given me probably the best car out there and all their work is paying off with some good finishes,” said Johnson, 48, following his division-high seventh DIRT big-block Modified feature win of the year. The Phelps, N.Y. phenom is the only driver that has posted at least one victory every year since DIRT was established in 1976. Brockville became the 43rd track to host an AAP Super DIRT Series event and it was the 15th speedway that Johnson has made his way into the winner’s circle. His 41st Series win in the Jeff Rudalavage-owned no. 14J NativePoker.Com-WPC Associates,Inc.-Pine Line Auto Sales/Bicknell ride improved his DIRT career-best win total to 336 in big-block competition.
Canadian favorite Pat O’Brien placed a solid second in his first tour appearance of the year to earn a guaranteed starting berth in the Eckerd 200 Championship during Super DIRT Week XXXV, Oct. 4-8, at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. Reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT Champion Tim Fuller, current Advance Auto Parts Series points leader Billy Decker and Pennsylvania veteran Frank Cozze filled out the final front-five at the 37 year-old Brockville speedplant.
Host promoter Paul Kirkland boasted a track-record 52 open-wheel entries with Quebec pilot Pierre Berthiaume topping Integra Shocks Time Trials turning in a single-lap best clocking of 14.475 sec. for an average speed of 62.176 mph around the banked quarter-miler. Johnson was 33rd fastest with a time over a second slower than Berthiaume, and his fourth-place finish in the second of five qualifying heats relegated him to 17th position on the 30-car starting grid for the 100-lap main event.
Regular tour campaigner Steve Paine selected the pole in the customary pre-race draw and jumped out to the early lead aboard his yellowbird no. 7x Tallmadge Tire-Terrell’s Potato Chips-Geneva Homes-J&M Roofers/TEO mount. With five laps complete, Brockville’s only big-block season points champion led current track DIRT 358-Modified points leader Danny O’Brien and his older brother Pat O’Brien, ’05 small-block points king at the BOS. Utilizing a big-block powerplant under the hood of his no. 6 Gypsum Logistics-Newells Garage-730 Truck Stop/Bicknell machine, Pat quickly disposed of Danny on lap nine and a handful of circuits later nosed ahead of Paine as they crossed the stripe side-by-side following a lap 14 restart. Tour invader and last year’s 358 Super DIRT Series race winner Stewart Friesen and Brockville weekly runner John Mulder tangled high in turn three to force the first of eight cautions the lap prior.
Back under green, O’Brien was able to increase his lead while his younger sibling made a move high around Paine for second on lap 22. Decker was the man on the move as he had cracked the top-five from his 12th-place start and with a quarter of the race over ran fourth following a close battle with New York nemesis Danny Johnson. Two more yellow flags for minor spins only offered a momentary slowdown for O’Brien as he was able to maintain his edge on the field at the halfway mark. But gradually working his way through the pack was Alan Johnson, and with 50 laps still to go the four-time Mr. DIRT titlist was carving his way among the fast five and looking for even more room to maneuver.
After shadowing Danny O’Brien for nearly 20 laps, Decker moved into the runner-up slot on lap 54 and set his sights on Flyin’ Pat O’Brien, who was in search of his second career Advance Auto Parts SDS win with his lone victory registered at Can-Am Motorsports Park in the summer of 1990. ‘A.J. Slideways’ took over third on lap 60 and it took another 12 circuits to grab second from Decker using his trademark move on the low side of the speedway with a quarter of the race left to track down the leader. A second caution period for a spinning Brian McDonald on lap 77 brought O’Brien and Johnson together and the final yellow flag kept them that way with only a dozen laps remaining to decide the outcome. That last slowdown was all Johnson needed as he ducked under he eldest O’Brien on lap 89 to forge the final lead change although positions directly behind were up for grabs until the checkered flag waved. O’Brien finished comfortably in second 10 car-lengths behind Johnson while Fuller edged Decker for third on the final circuit as Cozze watched intently in fifth. Danny Johnson and Danny O’Brien came next followed by 21st-place starter Gary Tomkins and fellow Super DIRT Series standouts Jimmy Phelps, Pat Ward and Matt Sheppard, who began 25th after qualifying through the consolation round.
“The whole show I was thinking about if I should’ve used a small-block tonight, but once the feature started the big-block set-up felt good right off the bat,” said Johnson, following his third career win at Brockville. His initial victories were scored in the Mr. DIRT 358-Modified Series events held in 2001 and 1998. “The car was just great from lap one and I thought it might get even better by the end. With the teams running out here today it doesn’t happen too often when you can come from so far back and pick up a win. The long hours the crew has been putting in are really starting to show, this car just keeps finishing races and getting better every time it does.”
Pat O’Brien reluctantly settled for runner-up honors although the four-time overall Mr. DIRT 358-Modified Champion finished in front of every other driver than Johnson that is regarded among the best in the DIRT big-block business today. “You can’t really expect to come out on top against these guys but its tough to lose out so close to the end,” said O’Brien, who ranks fifth on Brockville’s career Modified win list with 23 triumphs; his final five coming last year en route to the 2005 small-block season points championship. “I was doing all I could to hold Alan back at the end but his experience as a tour driver came through tonight. Its great running up against the top travelers, so with this being our first 100-lapper of the season a second isn’t too bad. I wish I could run a few more big shows around here, that might make it a little bit closer at the end.”
Fuller finished third to tally his fifth top-five finish in the opening eight Advance Auto Parts SDS events run to date steering the no. 19 JL Motorsports(Native Poker)-Chiefs Tobacco&Gas-G&R Auto Parts/TEO entry. “It feels real good to get out with a high finish at a bullring like this, so many things can happen with a lot of cars on a short track,” said Fuller, a two-time winner at Brockville in the 358-Mod class with his 2003 triumph a Mr. DIRT Series victory. “But it turned out to be a great track tonight. You could really get around and make some passes at the end. Out there you’re always when it comes to a new tour track. You try to go back to any notes you have for small tracks and just hope for the best. We were pretty close tonight and we’re happy to leave with another top-three, they never hurt you in the points.”

SKIDMARKS
2006 Tour 12: For the second straight year DIRT MotorSports™ has signed up the best big-block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series show. The list of a dozen contracted drivers (in alphabetical order) includes past Eckerd 200 champion Vic Coffey, four-time and defending Eckerd 200 titlist Billy Decker, third-generation big-block upstart Stewart Friesen, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller, ’04 Rookie of the Year Justin Hears, all-time Advance Auto Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn, DIRT’s winningest big-block Modified driver Alan Johnson, Canandaigua (NY) Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, second-year tour mainstay Jimmy Phelps, rising star Matt Sheppard, former Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins and 30-year open-wheel veteran Pat Ward.
Brockville Beginners: The roster of drivers registered for Advance Auto Parts SDS competition swelled by over two dozen in round seven at Brockville with nearly half the 52-car field newcomers to the 2006 tour. Many were among the host track small-block regulars participating in the big-block Modified special while others were gearing up for the return to Canada and Cornwall Motor Speedway the following weekend. Top-10 BOS point-earners on hand were leader Danny O’Brien, Bryan Rogers, Kyle Dingwall, Brian McDonald, Chris Jones, John Mulder, Todd Stewart, Mark Hitchcock and Paul Pekkonen. All but Rogers and Pekkonen qualified for the 100-lap finale with O’Brien (finished 7th), Dingwall (15th), Stewart (21st), Mulder (24th), McDonald (25th), Jones (28th) and Hitchcock (30th) finding their place on the 30-car starting grid.
First Fastest Then Finished For The Night: Florida Tour ’06 participant Pierre Berthiaume became the first Frenchman to set fast time during an Advance Auto Parts SDS events although the Joliette, Que. chauffeur emerged as the first-ever Integra Shocks Fast Timer not to qualify for the feature race held the same night. In past years the top-two time trailers were automatically locked into the pre-race draw for starting positions. The 2006 format lines up every driver in heat races. His best time put Berthiaume on the pole in the first preliminary event yet he proceeded to spin out on two separate occasions in his no. 20 B&G Performance-JM Racing-SD Performance/Bicknell machine and eventually placed 12th in the first consolation race to miss the cut. Joe Plazek from Caistor Centre, Ont. is the only other Canadian driver to set fast time as he earned the pole position start for the 1993 Eckerd 200 on the Syracuse Mile during Super DIRT Week at the New York State Fairgrounds.
From Full-Fender To Open-Wheel: DIRT MotorSports sanctions three premier touring divisions of short-track racing across the country --- World of Outlaws Sprints, World of Outlaws Late Models and the Advance Auto Part Super DIRT Series for big-block Modifieds. In some instances drivers cross over between classes and on rarer occasions they display an ability to be competitive. The WoO Late Models made their inaugural appearance at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Sunday, July 2 prior to Brockville’s Super DIRT Series event and big-block Mod mainstays Billy Decker, Tim Fuller and Vic Coffey all made the full-fender feature field. In time trials, Fuller (3rd) and Coffey (5th) were among the fastest five out of the 35 cars running under the clocks and Decker was 16th quickest. Decker improved to place eighth in the ‘Star Spangled 50’ finale while Coffey (14th) and Fuller (15th) finished further back. Oh yes, part-time DIRT Modified chauffeur and current Outlaws LM championship contender Tim McCreadie was fourth-best in qualifying and settled for third in the 18-minute A-Main. Decker and Fuller continued their short-track assault as they ventured on to foreign soil for the most recent AAP Series event at Brockville. “There’s just no comparison you can make with the Modifieds and Late Models,” said Decker, who leads the Advance Auto Parts standings by 77 markers over Alan Johnson and is also ranked 16th on the WoO LM points chart with a pair of top-10 tallies to his credit. “Running a Late Model at Weedsport on Sunday might have kept me a little sharper but there’s nothing you can carry over on how the car handles or find a good set-up with both cars. I just wish we had a few more LM races closer to home, their fast and a whole lotta fun. I think the fans like ‘em too.”
The O’Brien Factor: In any Modified race at Brockville the brothers O’Brien ---Pat and Danny--- must be figured somehow in the final rundown. Five-time BOS champion Danny is the current track leader in the Saturday night points chase and three-time champ Pat captured the 2005 track title when Brockville ran Friday nights. The popular pair from Kingston, Ont. played major roles in the Advance Auto Parts Series debut Tuesday evening at the Thousand Islands oval, with Pat utilizing a big-block powerplant while Danny stayed with his proven small-block engine. “It’s a pretty big disadvantage running the big-block weight and using a rev limiter box but hopefully we can just keep the tires under us and find something in time to be around at the end,” said Danny, 38, the winningest driver in Brockville history with 37 open-wheel victories; all but two have come in DIRT-sanctioned big & small-block racing. “We went out for practice and the set-up we normally run isn’t quite working. Right now the tack is getting more slippery so we could be in a lot of trouble if it starts to take down rubber. This is our first 100-lapper of the year so the big-block boys have an edge as they usually know what to do.” Added Pat, 41, who now runs a big-block at Can-Am on Saturday despite Brockville switching the 358 program from Friday nights. “We ran terrible at Brockville with the big-blocks here in 2004. I looked into using the 358 motor tonight but at the same time wanted to send more time getting laps in the big-block. The track was a little drier tonight and being our first 100-lap race we’ll try and go after a basic set-up. We don’t have as much experience in the longer races but hopefully our track knowledge can help us out a little in the end.” The third member of the O’Brien trio that was the only one not qualify on Tuesday was 24 year-old Tim. “That would have been the best thing about the whole night if we all could’ve qualified. We’ll get another chance this weekend at Cornwall if things work out, that’s what we’re shooting for.”
Paines Taking Trip: 2004 Brockville DIRT big-block points champion Steve Paine also hopes things work out better for him this coming Sunday at Cornwall. Pat O’Brien edged Paine by .005 seconds to claim heat two before the ‘Hurricane’ grabbed the number one slot to start on the pole for the nightcap. But after leading the opening 13 laps, any luck he may have salvaged went right out the window as the Waterloo, N.Y. pilot faded to 13th-place where he was found on the final scoresheet. “The track is a lot more slippery than when I raced here a couple years ago. Its till got the same banking but that’s about all. I didn’t feel too good in hot laps, I’ll just have to make a few more changes and hope for the best. There’s a lot of laps so anything can happen. Being around at the finish is what its all about and that’s what we’re looking to do.”
