PAINE TOPS CANANDAIGUA MOD RUN
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Steve Paine, from Waterloo, NY, nearly
lapped the entire starting field on his way to winning his second
DIRT Modified feature of the year at Canandaigua Speedway last
Saturday. Lance Dusett earned Canandaigua Sportsman victory
number 12, his first time back in victory lane since April 2000.
Jipp Ortiz won the Pro-Stock main while Adam DePuy continues as a
dominate force in the Street Stocks. Kaylee Schrader rocketed to
the victory in the first woman's "powder puff" race of the year.
The start of the 35-lap DIRT Modified main saw the yellow
immediately fly when Jeff Brownell Jr. slide off the speedway in
the first turn. He returned to the back of the line up and
continued.
Steve Gray was the early leader with Derrick Podsiadlo in
second. Gray built a two second lead over Podsiadlo as Charlie
Donk and Ray Bliss battled for third. But coming through the
field, from his 18th place starting spot, was Steve Paine. Paine
was fifth by lap nine and, in what seemed to be one move, passed
Podsiadlo, Donk and Gary Tomkins for second on lap 11. Two laps
later he dusted off Gray and started to build at lead.
By lap 17 Paine had pulled out to nearly a four second
advantage over the field and was in heavy lapped traffic. Donk
was now second followed by Tomkins, Vic Coffey, Gray and Chad
Brachmann. The final laps saw Paine lap all but the top seven
cars in what amounted to a high speed driving school lesson.
Tomkins passed Donk with ten to go to take second.
At the finish it was Paine followed by Tomkins, Donk, Coffey
and Brachmann. Randy Chrysler finished sixth and was the first
358-modified in the finish. The last car on the lead lap was
Justin haers in seventh.
Lance Dusett lead all 25-laps of the DIRT Sportsman feature.
He pulled away from the field, with Steve Doell, Phil LaVare, Rob
Bussey and Rick Miller, all in hot pursuit. But none of them
could keep up with Dusett. By lap 10, Lance held a six second, or
over a full straight away lead on Doell in second.
Scott Schrader seemed to be the only car faster then Dusett.
He took second from Doell on lap 11. One lap later the yellow
flew when Frank Wadsworth looped out in the first turn. This
would tighten the field up for the restart.
Schrader immediately started to challenge Dusett for the
lead on the restart. On the back stretch he tried to duck low,
but Dusett still had enough power to hold Schrader off.
The yellow came out for a second time when points leader
Eldon Payne Jr. spun in the first turn. A two car spin, Loren
Lincoln and John Plumb, in the third turn slowed the action one
lap later.
Finally a six lap dash to the checkers was in motion. Dusett
held on for the win, beating Schrader to the line by .526
seconds. Paul Guererri worked his way into third followed by Dan
Weisner and Dick Park Jr.. Dusett averaged 90.726 miles per hour
for the victory.
The start of the Pro-Stock feature saw three different
leaders in the first three laps; Wayne Ellison, Brian Thompson
and Roger Chrysler. It would be Chrysler who could pull away and
start to take command of the race. On lap five the yellow flew
when Thompson, running in second, spun out with a flat tire in
the third turn. This moved Frank Guererri jr. into second.
Guererri Jr. started to challenge Chrysler repeatedly. then
on lap ten, Jipp Ortiz entered the picture attempting to pass
Guererri Jr. on the high side down the back stretch for second.
This move failed, but two laps later Ortiz was able to make his
pass stick when the yellow flew for Matt Grubbe, who had spun in
the first turn.
Ortiz was able to pass Chrysler for the lead on lap 14 and
come home the winner. Chrysler held on for second followed by
Guererri Jr., James Henry and Kevin Smith. The average speed for
the race was 72.569 miles per hour.
The Street Stock main saw 29 cars answer the starter's call.
The start of the feature had to be aborted for a multi car tangle
in the first turn. The second attempt to start the feature was
much better with Mike Minutolo taking the lead followed by Jason
Whipple, Mike Murphy and Randy Peters.
Lap five saw Nick Dandino slow to a stop on the front
stretch for the yellow. On the restart Mike Welch passed Minutolo
for the front position. Welch was now leading Murphy, Adam Depuy
and Minutolo. Depuy finally passed Welch on lap 10 for the lead.
Dandino, who had returned from the pits two laps down, was
now the cause of a red flag. As the field exited turn four the
car of Steve Faulkner was hit and disabled. Without steering his
car drifted high across the front stretch. Dandino had no place
to go, slamming the outside wall and flipping over the Faulkner
car. Both drivers emerged uninjured.
With just three laps remaining Depuy led the field down to
the checkers. Welch finished second. A torrid battle for third
saw Rocco Conte drift high and make contact with Blane Smith in
the fourth turn of the final lap. This sent both drivers spinning
and wheels flying. Minutolo weaved through the accident to take
third. Murphy and Nick Rizzo completed the top five finishers.
The ladies races saw Kaylee Schrader pass both Laurie Hixson
and Jill Mott to win her first "Powder Puff" race of the year.
This Saturday Autogenesis and Canandaigua Chrysler-Dodge
will be hosting the racing action from the "Land of Legends". A
full program of DIRT Modified, Sportsman, Pro-Stock and Street
Stocks will be added to by the Central New York Mini-Sprints.
Also new this Saturday the Street Stock division will be running
qualifying heats, like all other divisions. A special B-Main for
non-qualified cars will then be run separately, with points
awarded in the B-Main also. Starting time for the evening events
will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
