McCREADIE AND FERRI TAKE CANANDAIGUA CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Tim McCreadie, from Watertown, NY and Adam Ferri, from Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada, were the big winners last Wednesday at Canandaigua Speedway. McCreadie took the $6,000 victory in the Advance Auto Parts 100, with his father Bob receiving the guaranteed starting spot at Syracuse for Super DIRT Week in October. Ferri won the 30-lap Western Region Sunoco Fuels DIRT Sportsman main event.

Brett Hearn, who set a new record of 100.083 mph in time trials, was lucky enough to redraw the pole starting position for the 100-lap feature. Hearn blasted into the lead at the drop of the green with Tim Fuller, Billy Decker, Pat Ward and Tim McCreadie in tow. As the second lap was going into the record books the yellow flew when Vince Vitale and Jeff brownell Jr. came together in the second turn and made contact with the outside barrier.

Hearn was able to build up a three car advantage over Decker on the restart, with McCreadie grabbing third. On lap nine, McCreadie made his patented outside move to pass Decker for second just before the yellow flew, lap 10, when Ron Cartwright Jr. came to a stop on the back stretch.

Danny Johnson, running in fifth before the yellow, made an excellent restart and moved into third. The yellow flew for the third time on lap 15 when Darryl Ruggles came to a stop in the first turn. A long period of green flag racing started with Hearn and McCreadie pulling away from Danny Johnson, Decker and Vic Coffey. Decker retook third from Johnson on lap 25.

On lap 36, McCreadie dove low in the second turn to pass Hearn for the lead in lapped traffic. By now the two leaders held nearly a half straight away lead over Decker in third.

The yellow came out on lap 44 when Gary Tomkins, who was not having the best night and had been lapped, slowed on the back stretch. Following the restart McCreadie blasted out to a half straight away lead over Hearn. At the halfway mark it was McCreadie, Hearn, Decker, Coffey, Danny Johnson and Alan Johnson.

The next yellow came on lap 56 when rookie Jeff Isabell, Shawn Beardsley and Brownell Jr. came together in the first turn. The restart came on lap 62, and just three green flags later the yellow flew when Chuck hebing brought the Troyer Experimental car to a stop just off the back stretch.

McCreadie set sail after this yellow to pull out a seven car advantage over Hearn. Decker lost third to Coffey on the restart, with Coffey nearly a half straight away behind the two leaders by lap 90.

Chuck Bower, running one lap down, suffered a flat tire. In a true act of sportsmanship, Bower nursed his car into the pits to avoid a yellow. The race looked to go green until lap 93 when Chad Brachmann slowed with a flat tire.

The race resumed on lap 97. As the field exited the final turn Alan Johnson was able to move outside of Coffey for third. At the finish line it was McCreadie, Hearn, Alan Johnson, Coffey and Decker. Bob McCreadie, who finished ninth, was the first non-Syracuse Super DIRT Week guaranteed car across the finish line. Bob McCreadie will represent Canandaigua at Syracuse during Super DIRT Week.

The 30-lap DIRT Sportsman Western Regional race saw Adam Ferri, winner of the first heat race, grab the lead at the drop of the green and never relinquish that advantage.

The tone of the race was set in the early laps with three yellow flags during the first three laps. The third lap saw a five car shunt in the first turn involving Stewart Friesen, Phil LaVare, Tony Pargarich, Scott George and Gary Smoker. Six additional yellows would plague the race.

Through out it all Ferri held off Brian Sage. In the closing stages of the race, local multi-time feature winner, Todd Henderson, moved into the picture. Ferri held a 1.3 second lead over George and Henderson with just three laps remaining. With just one lap to go the yellow flew for the last time when Russ Hefti slowed in the back stretch. This set up a one lap dash to the checkers with Ferri taking the win. As the field started that final lap Henderson was able to get around Sage for second. Sage came home in third followed by Richard Briggs and Eldon Payne Jr..

PIT NOTES: Thirty-Two modifieds and thirty-seven sportsman were on hand at Canandaigua under extremely threatening weather conditions. Rains again plagued the region for the sixth night in a row.

The small block, 358-Modified, Turning Stone Casino Resort Super DIRT Series comes to Canandaigua on Wednesday, August 20. The Pro Stocks will be joining the action for a 20-lap feature. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
