Pauch $5000 Richer After Sweeping NES Twin 35's
New Egypt, NJ (Sept. 13, 2008) - Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, NJ got back on track Saturday night at New Egypt Speedway as he swept both ends of the "Twin 35's" presented by Mr. Bob's Portable Toilets. It was the Pauch's first trips to victory lane since mid-July ending a nine race winless streak. Pauch picked up $2500 for each win after qualifying by winning the B Main. Pauch stellar night overshadowed a great run by last week's winner Sam Martz, who finished second to Pauch in both events after also qualifying thru the Consi. The wins give Pauch 71 career Big-Block Modified wins at NES.
"We got real lucky in the first race," exclaimed Pauch in victory lane, "In that big wreck off turn 4 (Keith) Hoffman lost a wheel and spun and cars were going every direction, I saw (Frank) Cozze spinning in front of me so I checked up and got knocked into Keith's car and somehow we ended up coming thru and I was able to keep going. I thought about going in but didn't want to give up the track position so I decided to go for the win, and fortunately my tire that was rubbing lasted the whole race."
In the opening 35 lapper, Rick Holsten showed the way thru the first 6 laps while Pauch and Martz, who started all the way back in 19th and 20th respectively, were quickly charging thru the field as several yellows slowed the pace. On lap 7 Hoffman lost a wheel while exiting turn 4 causing a melee that resulted in Frank Cozze being upside down. Hoffman, who was just two points behind Pauch in the championship chase at the start of the night was finished for the first event while Cozze returned for the restart. Pauch wasted no time as he took the lead from Holsten one lap after the restart. Martz quickly moved into second but could not keep pace with Paquch. Meanwhile, Cozze, was driving like a man possessed as he came thru the field to 4th when the final yellow appeared on lap 26. The restart found Martz mounting a serious challenge for the win, only to fall 1 car length short at the end. Cozze came back from the early wreck to finish a very impressive third, followed by "Mr. Bob" himself Bob Drayton in fourth who also qualified thru the consi and Ken Carberry was fifth.
The second feature saw Pauch start 12th and get to the front quickly as he was running second by lap #3 behind Tim Tanner, Jr. Tanner proved to be a viable foe as he lead Pauch until lap 13. Once in front Pauch pulled away at will as Martz again grabbed second from Tanner. This race would be different than the first though as Pauch was on his game and won by over a straightaway. Martz capped off his night with another fine runner up finish. Drayton also impressed everyone again as he posted his second top five finish of the evening crossing the line in third. Hoffman, who had to go to his back up car and start last, showed what kind of a fierce competitor he is by driving up to a fourth place finish and John Miloszar got his first top five of the year finishing fifth after starting in 14th.
Gary Butler of Phillipsburg, NJ picked up his 4th straight victory in a row in the A-1 Sportsman division as he passed Rich Scagliotta on the final lap for the win. Scagliotta settled for second followed by Willie Osmun in third, Lou Farina III in fourth and John Romano, Jr. fifth.
Bryan Papiez bested the largest field of the year in the 15 lap Crate-1 Sportsman feature. Papiez was the best in the 17 car field tonight as he beat team cars Rob Stump and George Idell Jr. for the top spot. In the Outlaw Stock 20 lap feature point leader Rich Mongeau won his third feature event of the year over P.J. Oliver and Rob Longo.
Next Saturday night, September 20th, C & S Equipment presents Championship Night at New Egypt Speedway. All divisions will race with double point values up for grabs in all features.
