Tomkins Super In Advance Auto Parts Series 'Summer Sizzler' Win At Canandaigua Speedway.

Gary Tomkins continued his torrid pace Thursday night at Canandaigua Speedway, leading all but the initial 17 laps en route to a convincing win in the ‘19th Annual Super Summer Sizzler 100’ Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series event. The 100-lap triumph on home soil was the first Advance Auto Parts SDS victory of the season although his eighth at the historic Ontario County Fairgrounds oval in 15 races. Best of all, Tomkins pocketed the $6,000 winner’s share on Honeoye Auto Parts Night --- the primary sponsor of the no. 1 Bicknell big-block Modified entry that he drove which is owned by Honeoye Auto proprietor Doug Dulen.

“This is the first time I’ve ever won on my sponsor’s night, I usually have a bad finish with everybody in the (VIP) tower,” said Tomkins, 40, who overtook Tim Fuller on lap 41 en route to the tour victory last August at the ‘Land of Legends’ layout. In the recent ’06 edition, the Clifton Springs, N.Y. chauffeur passed Fuller on lap 18 and staved off every challenge made by current AAP Series points leader Alan Johnson to secure the popular win. Fuller finished third ahead of Billy Decker and Bert Hard Charger Brett Hearn, who started 19th in the 30-car field. “After I won last year Doug wanted to sponsor the event next time. I told him that might not be a good idea the way things have gone in the past. But everything went our way and we had another great team effort tonight.”

The night began with all eyes on the team of Alan Johnson, fresh off his tour-high fourth extra-distance victory Monday at Merrittville (Ont.) Speedway behind the wheel of the potent no. 14j NativePoker.Com-WPC Associates,Inc.-Pine Line Auto Sales/Bicknell entry owned by Jeff Rudalavage and Tony Laughing. Johnson set fast time (18.278 sec.) to earn the Integra Shocks qualifying award, then won the first heat race before drawing third on the grid to start the main event. Tomkins was eighth quickest under the clocks and placed second in his own qualifier to get into the pre-race drew where he grabbed the number starting spot.

With a full moon lurking high over turn three at the east end of the speedway, front-row partner Fuller charged out to take an early advantage with Tomkins in tow followed by Decker, Johnson and one-time track regular Mitch Gibbs, last year’s fourth-place finisher. The leaders reached traffic after a dozen non-stop laps around the smooth half-miler before Ryan Phelps slowed on the back chute to incur the first caution period five circuits later. The biggest wreck of the season took place on the ensuing restart with 11 cars scattered on the front straightaway in the aftermath.

It all began when Pat Ward was turned sideways rounding turn four in anticipation of the next green flag. Canandaigua regular Matt Sheppard and rookie contender Kevin Bates were right behind Ward with Vic Coffey getting turned around just shy of the starter’s stand. Car after car piled in leaving the main chute cluttered with bent up machinery and forcing head flagman Dave Farney to throw a rare red flag. Charlie Donk and Phelps sat tangled together near the infield with Danny Johnson, Justin Haers and Jeff Brownell also involved in the mishap. Clustered up against the front wall sat the cars of Todd Burley, Chuck Bower and Frank Cozze with Hearn wedged under Burley and Nextel Cup driver J.J. Yeley tucked right behind Cozze. It took the track crew nearly 15 minutes to clear the course, following the last laps of the night for Phelps, Donk, Sheppard, Burley and Steve Hulsizer while Hearn, Haers and Brownell continued on.

Just as Tomkins sped past Fuller on lap 18, yet another yellow flag flew, this time for Haers who got tapped from behind between turns one and two and slammed into by Butch Tittle as the pack searched for a way past. It still took two more cautions ---the first after Bates suffered a flat right-rear tire (lap 21) and the second for a slowing Danny Johnson in turn one (lap 24)--- before the drivers could settle down as just 20 cars remained trackside with only a quarter of the race in the record book. With 25 laps scored, Tomkins was chased by Alan Johnson, Decker, 15th-place starter Paine and Fuller.

With green flag laps beginning to click off a rapid pace, Tomkins and Johnson managed to pull away from their closest pursuers while Fuller continued to fade as the race reached the halfway mark. With 50 laps complete, Paine had passed Decker for third while early-race crash victim Brownell harged back through to grab fifth in a hard-fought battle with Gibbs. Fuller, Hearn, Jimmy Phelps and Dale Planck rounded out the top-10 with Coffey, Bobby Varin, Bower and Ward the last cars counted on the lead lap.

The lead duo extended their advantage to nearly a half-track with 40 laps remaining with drivers swapping positions desperately trying to stay in the hunt. Gibbs forced out the fifth and final caution on lap 70 when his right-rear tire flattened in turn four, with the slowdown giving Johnson another shot at overtaking Tomkins in hopes of increasing his all-time win total to 114 in Canandaigua. But Tomkins stayed focused and never missed the mark as he once again took off and left his competition in the dust.

In the final chase for the checkers the top-two remained intact while Paine faded in the latter stages to open the door for Decker to move into the show position and Fuller to regain his front-five status. Fuller was still not content and stole third from Decker with 10 to go while Hearn cracked the top-five with a handful of laps remaining in the century grind. At the line it was Tomkins in the no. 1 Honeoye Auto Parts-Pillsbury/Bicknell mount over Johnson by a full 2.6 seconds with Fuller, Decker and Hearn coming across next. The same five pilots came into the Canandaigua event atop the Advance Auto Parts SDS standings and left putting further distance on the competition with 10 point races remaining to determine the overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT titlist for 2006.

“Wow, that was a long race,” said Tomkins, immediately following his 37th career win (6th all-time) at Canandaigua making it an even dozen on the demanding Advance Auto Parts traveling tour. “And the one guy I didn’t want to see behind me was right there all night. I was getting tight in the middle then just ran better at the end, I didn’t realize I had such a big lead until it was over. When you’re out front you can’t watch where everybody else is running so I didn’t know which way was the fastest other than down low in turns three and four was good. I’m the one getting interviewed here but tonight was a great team effort. When all the top teams come in you gotta defend your hometurf and you want to do the best in front of family and friends. And winning on your sponsor’s night, it just doesn’t get much better than this.”

While runner-up Johnson has racked up four tour wins and three fast time awards, DIRT NorthEast’s winningest big-block Modified driver has yet to accomplish both feats in the same night. His latest trip to Canandaigua kept that distinction intact. “My car was probably as good as it gets, I don’t really know what could’ve been done to win tonight,” said Johnson, 48, the only driver to win at least one feature every year since DIRT MotorSports was established in 1976. The Phelps, N.Y. phenom has reached the winner’s circle 340 times including a division-high 11 checkered flags taken this season. “Sometimes you hit the right set-up, sometimes you don’t. Tonight everything felt really good right up until the end, we just came up one spot short which isn’t too bad. In this series you have to be happy with a top-five in any race, there’s so many guys that can win and even more that can make a solid run on any given night.”

Fresh off his flag-to-flag triumph at nationally recognized Eldora Speedway on Aug. 5, defending Mr. DIRT kingpin Fuller was also content with his top-three tally. “Third here is like a win to me, I’m just horrible here all the time,” said Fuller, 38, whose best finish in the ‘Summer Sizzler’ was a third-place in 2002. The Edwards, N.Y wheelman made Canandaigua his Saturday night hangout from 1998-2001 and recorded just a single win during that time. “I don’t really know why we faded in the middle or why we came back at the end. We certainly could’ve done a lot worse, like gotten in that pile of crap on the front in the beginning. We’ve been a lot worse here before so right now I’m pretty happy. Staying consistent all year is the most important and we got that part out of the way here tonight.”

2006 Tour 12: For the second straight year DIRT MotorSports™ has signed up the best big-block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series show. The list of a dozen contracted drivers (in alphabetical order) includes popular Pennsylvania pilot Frank Cozze, four-time and defending Eckerd 200 titlist Billy Decker, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller, all-time Advance Auto Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn, DIRT’s winningest big-block Modified driver Alan Johnson, five-time DIRT MotorSports NE Driver of the Year Danny Johnson, Canandaigua (NY) Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, second-year tour mainstay Jimmy Phelps, first-year full-time Series follower Dale Planck, rising star Matt Sheppard, former Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins and 30-year open-wheel veteran Pat Ward.

Fairgrounds Firsts: Of the 35 teams signed up for Canandaigua’s Summer Sizzler, five first-time entries helped fill the star-studded roster including Nextel Cup driver J.J. Yeley, Fonda Speedway regular Bobby Varin and weekly Ontario County runners Charlie Donk, Jeff Brownell Jr. and Steve Gray. Brownell (6th) was the highest finisher and earned the guaranteed starting berth for the Eckerd 200 during Super DIRT Week in October. Varin placed 10th down one lap, Yeley finished 22nd in Billy Decker’s team car and Donk (28th) got caught up in the lap 17 frontstretch wreck that required a rear red flag situation. Gray was the only driver not to qualify from that group.

Yeley Fits Into ‘Legends’ Field: Exactly one year ago Nextel Cup driver J.J. Yeley competed in his first Advance Auto Parts SDS races at Canandaigua. Last August he teamed with Waterloo chauffeur Dave Rauscher and last night he was a teammate of Series veteran Billy Decker in a LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium International/Bicknell entry --- the same car that Decker finished second in at Eldora Speedway’s tour event on Aug. 5. “I remember last year really well … we crashed in the heat, won a consi and got up to ninth in the feature before getting a flat,” reminisced Yeley before buckling into John Wight’s ride for the first time on Thursday. “After we lost two laps in the pits we ended up out of the top-20 so we’re looking forward to taking another shot at it with John’s car.” The Canandaigua show marked Yeley’s fifth-ever appearance in a DIRT Modified. The former USAC champion and current Cup contender from Phoenix, Ariz set 20th fastest time (14th in ’05) at Canandaigua before finishing 22nd (21st n ’05) in the #91 Gypsum ride. The latest deal came together just the Wednesday evening before when Yeley’s agent contacted DIRT NE Marketing Director Cory Reed at the Weedsport office and said he was available. Reed in turn phoned car owner John Wight and the pair met for the first time prior to practice on Thursday. “We don’t race The Glen until tomorrow so I had two choices, play golf or race a big-block Modified so here I am,” said Yeley, who ran the Syracuse Mile during Super DIRT Week on two occasions while running a small-block at Rolling Wheels Raceway prior to his latest trip to Canandaigua. Yeley also won the ‘Salt City 100’ USAC Silver Crown Championship at the NYS Fairgrounds in both 2002 and ’03. “I love running dirt tracks, that’s where I came from. If I could I’d probably run a lot more but NASCAR keeps us guys pretty busy most of the year.”

No Paine, No Gain: Steve Paine entered the Super DIRT Series showdown at Canandaigua hoping to improve on his 27th-place finish from a year ago. The six-time defending track points champion was also looking for his first tour win of the season at the same place he claimed five previous Advance Auto Parts SDS victories. “We’ll be alright if we don’t get fenced like last year,” recalled Paine, whose last 100-lap tour triumph at the ‘Land of Legends’ came in 2003. “Some people say when the tour comes into town the regulars have a home track disadvantage. The track crew goes out and changes the race surface when the big show is in town. That’s not the case at Canandaigua, its usually pretty consistent and you know what to expect.” Holding high expectation at his home track, Paine got as high as third from his 15th starting slot before dropping to seventh at the stripe.

Gray Days Ahead: The last time Steve Gray competed in an Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series event he raced among the leaders, finishing third in Rolling Wheels Raceway’s 2002 Fourth of July special sandwiched between winner Brett Hearn, runner-up Billy Decker and the brothers Johnson, Alan (4th) and Danny (5th). For the past eight weeks the Rushville, N.Y. driver has been steering the no. 28p Proctor Roofing-Payne’s Tiltbed Service/TEO car as driver/owner Eldon Payne Jr. recovers from an injury. “Its been a struggle having problems with the set-up and then blowing up the motor a couple weeks ago,” said Gray, whose best finish this season at Canandaigua is seventh-place. “Finding the right combination is what its all about. But when Eldon comes back in a couple weeks everything will be up in the air again. There’s a second car but nothing’s concrete, I just don’t have the right finances to put together my own team. My future is definitely uncertain right now, I just may be looking for a new ride before the season comes to an end.”
