SWINEHART GETS THIRD ROGERS MEMORIAL AND KLINE EARNS FOURTH LATE MODEL FEATURE WIN AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
Bechtelsville, PA August 7, 2005 . . . Two time NASCAR Modified champion Ray Swinehart wheeled the P.K.Moyer Excavating No. 33 Modified to a resounding victory in the 50-lap Forrest Rogers Memorial presented by Stauffer Construction NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. Ron Kline, current Late Model division point leader, was able to wheel the Tom Oates Chevrolet No.4 Late Model to victory in the 20-lap main event for Late Models.
Tom Umbenhauer was quick to come from third to first at the drop of the green and lead the field into turn one. In fact Umbenhauer just kept leading the 29 car starting field lap after lap. At the 11 lap marker Umbenhauer was already lapping some of the slower cars with Barry Readinger and Kenny Gilmore following.
With 17 laps in the record book, Umbenhauer still in front of the pack, Barry Readinger, running second, brought out the red flag when his car caught fire and came to a stop in turn two. Readinger was not injured but his strong effort was done for the night.
On the restart Kenny Gilmore was running second to the blistering pace being sent by Umbenhauer.
At 26 circuits of the one-third-mile clay banked oval Shawn Reimert was now second after Gilmore spun in turn four and had to go to the rear of the field. Two laps later Ray Swinehart, coming from 10th starting spot, moved into second and started to reel in the leader.
At 35 laps Ryan Watt spun off the fourth turn and that brought out a caution closing the field behind Umbenhauer. On the restart Swinehart was able to shoot to the front off turn two and once in fron the commanded the rest of the 50-lapper to pick up his third in a Forrest Rogers Memorial and earn $10,000. The Bechtelsville, PA racer also won the 25-lap feature the evening before at Big Diamond Speedway.
In victory lane Swinehart gave credit to his sponsors and his hard working crew. He also made a point of saying thank you to his wife.
There have been 10 different feature winners in the modified division of competition this season with four point races yet to be run.
Second spot went to Umbenhauer of Richland, PA with Mike Gular (Harleysville) earning a third. Meme DeSantis (Temple), back in the Norm Hansell owned #357 for the night, finished fourth coming from 16th starting spot. Four time track champion and current point leader Jeff Strunk (Bethel) finished fifth after having started 19th.
The 50-lap Memorial is run each year to remember the man who had the vision and the plan and then built the one-third-mile, clay banked Grandview Speedway.
Former Late Model champion John Giesler lead the 24 car field down for the green and set the pace for the first lap of the 20-lap main event for NASCAR Late Models. On the second circuit Junior Grebe was able to put his No. 73 in front of the pack.
At 13 laps , after a caution, Ron Kline was able to put his mount in first and Junior Grebe headed for the pits with mechanical troubles forcing him from competition. Once in front it was easy pickings for the Green Lane racer as he won his fifth feature race of the season with the Tom Oates Chevrolet sponsored entry.
Second spot went to Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) coming from 13th starting position. Two time Late Model champion Lou Egrie (Willow Grove) finished third having challenged for the top spot a couple times during the event. Brian Shuey (Hamburg) was fourth and Steve Sennott (Gilberstville) finished in fifth place.
Late Model qualifying races were won by Sean Merkel, Junior Grebe and Mike Kellner while the Jim Brown Cash Dash went to Merkel.
Craig VonDohren won the first qualifying heat race with the rest of the qualifiers going to Jimmy Reppert, John Willman, Jon Kellner and Cliff Quinn. Consolation victories were earned by Jeff Strunk, Keith Brightbill and Ryan Watt while Willman picked up more than $300 for his win in the Cheers Tavern Cash Dash.
Coming up on Saturday, August 13th is Mavericks Motorcycle Night with the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified and Late Models being featured? Several special happenings during the night will raise money for charity.
A new event added to the schedule is the Jerry Glase/Chuck Sennott Memorial Late Model Championship set for Saturday, August 20th. The 30-lap feature race, paying at least $700 to win, will honor the memory of Glase, a 30 year employee of the speedway who passed away after a battle with cancer, and Sennott, a feature winning Late Model racer who was fatally injured at another speedway. Sponsorship opportunities and lap sponsorships are available for this event. The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds will also be part of the special night with racing starting at 7:30 p.m.
