Podolak cleans up on Swiffer night at Brockville
BROCKVILLE-Ask any race driver which race they really want to win, and they will answer on their sponsor's night at the Speedway. Bobby Podolak did just that leading almost the entire race in his Swiffer sponsored number 7 in the 25 Empire Super Sprints feature on Friday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway.
Podolak using a new car he acquired a couple of weeks ago survived a number of restarts to score an impressive victory before the Proctor and Gamble faithful on hand at the fast quarter mile oval. Billy White was second at the finish line follwed by Luke Ericksen, former Sportsman driver Jessica Zemken and Alain Bergeron. There was one serious incident on lap 2 as Jeff Cook got upside down on the front straight. Cook was okay but his number 10 sprint car sustained suspension and wing damage and could not continue. Local favourite Rick Wilson went out early with gear problems.
"It's a race to the front between Danny and I and whoever gets there first usually wins." Those were the words of a happy Pat O Brien in victory lane as he captured his 6th feature win of 2005 in the 30 lap 358 Modified main event. The points leader admitted that the car was as good as it has been all season as he blasted his way to the front and then easily outdistanced brother Danny. Bryan Rogers was third in front of Chris Jones and Kyle Dingwall.
There was a new face in victory lane for the second straight week for the Sportsman division. Chris Herbison made some nifty moves in the early going and survived some scares in lapped traffic to hold off points leader Marcel Pecore in the 20 lap affair. Herbison returned to the track about 6 weeks ago and his team has shown steady improvement prepping for the Friday night win. Ryan Poole, Brad Kirkland and Chris Raabe were third through fifth respectively.
Adam Turner made a bold move on an early restart going three wide on the inside. Turner made it stick down on the bottom of turn 1 and took the lead from 4th on the restart and then fended off a late challenge from Peter Stapper for the win in the 20 lap Street Stock race. Shane Ray was third followed across the line by Charles Barkley and Jack Code.
There was one more move to remember for a win on Friday night it came on the last lap of the 12 Lap Rookie feature. Joe Banks running second powered around the outside of the track off of the final turn to beat Jesse Perrin to the finish line by a bumper length to take the victory. Stephen Smith was third follwed by Martin Bernard and Chris Bakker.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Friday night, August 26th with a full race program plus a visit from the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club. The green flag drops at 7:30 pm.
