Hindley, Moore top double 358-Mod mains at Accord

by Brett Deyo

ACCORD, N.Y. (July 20, 2001) - Tom Hindley and Chris Moore both visited DIRT 358 Modified victory lane Friday night at Accord Speedway. Moore, of Pound Ridge, NY picked up his long awaited first victory in the regularly scheduled 25-lapper, while Hindley put forth an impressive effort in the 30-lap heldover event, charging from deep in the field to the front for his second win in two weeks at the quarter mile oval.

In the evening nightcap event, Jeremy Markle jumped into the early lead, and he held on at the front of the field for five circuits before Jackie Brown, Jr. made a bold move to the inside to take command in turn four. Despite several caution flags, the second generation driver Brown went unchallenged during the first half of the event.

On the ninth lap, Moore burst into the second spot with the Downes Racing No. 40 and began to chase down Brown, when the yellow lights flickered on with ten laps in the books. Moore, running his best race of the season, ran door to door on the outside with Brown, but had to settle back into second as the lead duo crossed the stripe for the thirteenth go round.

One lap later, Brown slipped a bit high in turn two, and that was all Moore needed, as he quickly jumped to the inside and took over the top spot. From that point on, he opened up a sizable advantage on the field for an immensely popular and hard earned win.

"The car was really good tonight," commented Moore, also a Big Block Modified regular at Lebanon Valley Speedway. "I just worked on patience tonight in the second race, just trying to avoid the early accidents and it all came together."

Jackie Brown, Jr. was a strong second, followed by Barry Davis, Doug Tyler, Jr., and Robbie Green, who picked up the ride in Bobby Zwart's No. 103 after a crash in the heldover event sidelined his car for the night.

Several accidents delayed the start of the July 4th heldover main, but once it finally did get underway, it was Michael Murphy taking command in his No. 36, with Mark Pullen tucked in on his rear bumper. Murphy and Pullen put on an exciting battle at the front of the field for several laps before Pullen took over the top spot on the seventh lap.

Murphy made a bold move to the inside on the ninth circuit to grab the spot back, but the two cars got together and slid up the track, allowing Tom Hindley, who started fourteenth, to edge his Feder's Auto Group No. 17H to the point.

Points leader Rick Mill moved up to challenge Hindley just past the halfway point, but the Fair Oaks, NY driver was just too strong, and collected his second checkered of the season, worth $1,000. Mill rebounded for second after being involved in a few early jingles, with Murphy finishing a career best third. Mark Pullen and Doug Tyler, Jr. rounded out the top five.

In the time shortened DIRT Sportsman main event, Bill Deckelman of Fremont Center, NY took his first win of the season in exciting position. Coming from fourteenth spot in the 20-car field, the aggressive young driver made it to the point by the eleventh go round. Due to excessive cautions, the race was checkered on lap 13 and Deckelman was awarded his first victory at the track in over four years.

Jimmy Winchell finished second after starting back in the eighteenth position, while Mike Trautschold settled for third after leading the first nine laps. Rich Oxford was a consistent fourth and Jeff Hulseapple completed the front five.

Scott Liese of Port Ewen, NY was finally able to overcome his recent bad luck, winning a caution marred 20-lap Street Stock feature. Taking over the lead early on, the personable Liese held a comfortable advantage at the front of the field for the remainder of the distance in his Ruge's Parts Center No. 28.

Brad Curry had his best ever finish in second, while Jim Cronk finished third. Larry Temple, Jr. and George Christiana completed the top five.

George Catanzano of Hudson, NY won the 15-lap IMCA Modified feature for his second trip to victory lane this season. Jim Fugel was second, ahead of Bob Banks, Mike Brown and Fonda Speedway regular Keith Ackerknecht.

Billy White of Canaan, Conn. won the 15-lap 1200cc Mini Sprint feature, for his second win of the season. White won out in an all out war with Pete Sindt just past the halfway point, then drove away for the hard earned win. John Lieto, Daryl Quackenbush, Steve Lapine and Rich Parete rounded out the top five.

Bobby Brown of Old Greenwich, Conn. won an exciting 15-lap Strictly Stock feature over Dave Gerard, Ron Irvin, Joe Narok and George Decker.

The racing action continues at the number one action track next Friday night with the 55-lap Joe Winne Memorial Race for the DIRT 358 Modifieds, paying $2,000 to the winner. Also on the card will be DIRT Sportsman, Street Stocks, Strictly Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and 1200cc Mini Sprints.
