Robbie Green Returns To Winning Form At Accord
By: Brett Deyo
ACCORD, NY- Popular veteran Robbie Green returned to winning form Friday
night at Accord Speedway. Green, of Newburgh, NY, grabbed the lead early on
in the 30-lap DIRT 358 Modified feature, then pulled away for his fourth
victory of the season.
Chris Moore led the field to the green flag in the No. 40, but it was
Green powering into the top spot in his Gross Graphics No. 69 by the time the
field reached the backstretch. As the laps clicked off, Green was able to
increase his lead at the front of the field, while a wild battle for the
runner up spot raged on behind him.
Green was nearly a straightaway in front of Rich Ricci, Jr., who had
taken over the second spot, when the caution flag flew on the ninth lap for
Steve Walsh and Scott Frack, who tangled in the second turn. On the restart,
Green edged back into the lead while Joe Winne, Jr. and Rick Mill powered
into second and third, respectively.
Only one lap was completed before a tap from behind sent Ricci spinning
in turn four, necessitating another yellow flag. Once again, the steady,
smooth Green resumed his lead, increasing his lead over Winne and Mill, who
ran in close formation. On lap 19, lapped traffic began to play a big
factor, but several spectacular three wide moves through the slower cars
allowed Green to hold onto a comfortable lead.
A final caution with five laps to go bunched up the field, but on this
night, Green was unstoppable, picking up a much deserved victory, worth
$1,000. “The car was running very well tonight,” commented Green. “We got a
good jump on the start and I was able to open up a lead there. The lapped
traffic was pretty interesting at the end, but I got through it.”
Rick Mill made a bold slingshot move on the final lap to grab second in
his CV Machine No. 77, while second generation Winne had a fine run in third.
Jackie Brown, Jr. and Rich Ricci, Jr. completed the front five.
In DIRT Sportsman action, track champion Jimmy Johnson of Bloomingburg,
NY picked up a win in his D&J Used Auto Parts No. 77. After starting from
the pole, Johnson fought an all out war with Scott Ferrier during the mid
portions of the event, then pulled away late in the race for his seventh
overall victory of the season.
Johnson grabbed the lead on the start, with Ferrier, who started second,
running close behind in second. The race’s first caution flag flew on lap 9,
and that is when it got interesting. The two leaders made contact several
times on the ensuing three restarts, before Ferrier was finally able to take
over the spot on the eleventh lap.
Two laps later, Ferrier slid just a bit too high, opening the door for
Johnson, who slipped through on the inside and regained the lead, which he
wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the event. Ferrier was a strong
second, ahead of a rapidly improving Chuck Thomaschek, who rallied to a third
place finish in the No. 8C. Joe Sarvis had his best ever run in fourth, and
Pete Booth rounded out the top five.
358 Modified regular Jackie Brown, Jr. made a foray into the Street Stock
division, and pulled off an upset victory in the 20-lap feature. Starting
from second spot, Brown, of Hurley, NY, grabbed the lead on the second lap,
then fought off Don Williams for the victory. Don Palmateer was third, ahead
of John Roese and Ray See, Jr.
In the 12-lap Strictly Stock feature, Mike Deyo of New Windsor, NY earned
his first career Accord victory with the Champion Supplies No. 14. Deyo
grabbed the lead on the first lap, then pulled away in a dominating
performance for the much deserved win.
George Decker of Walden, NY won the heldover 12-lap Strictly Stock
feature, holding off a determined Dave Gerard for the win. Scott Hornbeck
was third, ahead of Ray Tarantino and Jay Smalley.
Jim Fugel of Olive Bridge, NY took an impressive win the 15-lap IMCA
Modified feature, outrunning rival George Catanzano for the win. For the
consistent Fugel, it was his fifth trip to victory lane at the speedway this
season. Catanzano, Bob Banks, Cory Fachini and Mike Brown trailed at the
finish.
Peter Sindt won the 15-lap heldover feature event for the 1200cc Mini
Sprints over Daryl Quackenbush, Rich Sennett, PJ Peworchik and Jeremy Vunk.
In the regularly scheduled Mini Sprint 15-lapper, Steven Boyd came from
tenth starting position for the win in his No. 75, with PJ Peworchik, Jeremy
Vunk, Joe Sanfilippo and Daryl Quackenbush rounding out the top five.
The racing resumes at the number one action track Friday night, September
21st with a 30-lap, $1,000 to win Mini Sprint feature. Also on the card will
be a regular show of DIRT 358 Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, Street Stocks, IMCA
