TWO IN A ROW FOR JENSEN AT THE AFTON RACEWAY
Afton,NY.....Friday May 15th 1998, it was True Value Hardware Stores and
Quickway Convience Stores Night at the Afton Raceway. Paul Jensen picked up
win number two in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modified feature event
before a packed house.
Earl Walrath and Steve Eldred would lead the field of 24 cars to the drop
of the green for the 30 lap NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modified event.
Walrath lead the first circuit before Tim French who started fourth would get
by to take over on lap two. Defending Co-Track Champion Robbie Green put his
machine in the lead on the next circuit with a pass of French in turn three.
Green would pull out to a five car advantage over French and Jerry
Northrup who was now up to the third spot on lap ten. Behind the leaders,
Mitch Gibbs and Paul Jensen were on the move. Gibbs who started thirteenth
was now up to the seventh spot and challenging Brian Waever for sixth.
Meanwhile opening night winner Paul Jensen was on the move from his
seventeenth starting spot and entered the top ten by lap sixteen.
Up front Green was starting to feel the pressure from Northrup for the
lead. On the move was Paul Jensen as he was now up to the fifth spot by lap
20. Green was in front with Northrup second, Brian Weaver third. On lap
twenty-two Jensen moved by Weaver for third and was catching the leaders.
Going into turn four to complete lap twenty-four, Northrup made a run to the
inside of Green for the lead.
This opened the door for Jensen as well as he would pull along side both
Northrup and Green going into turn one three wide for the lead. When they
exited the corner it was Paul Jensen as the new leader with Northrup second
and Green back to third. From here on it was all Paul Jensen as he would win
his second in a row at Afton. Jerry Northrup finished a strong second, Brian
Weaver was able to get by Robbie Green for third, Green crossed in fourth and
Jeremy Smith rounded out the top five. NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modified
heat wins went to Tim French, Robbie Green and Tony Pepicelli.
In the 20 lap Sportsman race, Steve Anderson and Bill Walters put on a
show for the fans as they battled for the win throughout most of the feature.
Anderson took the lead from Geoff Carner on lap two. After many laps of
keeping Bill Walters at bay, Walters grabbed the lead from Anderson on lap
eighteen and went on to record the win. Anderson was second, Aaron Excell was
third,Tony Ross and Gary Roberts completed the top five. Heat wins went to
Wink Hinkley and Geoff Carner.
Denny Smith led wire to wire to win the 20 lap Street Stock feature. Don
Newell was second, followed by Skip French, John Walker and TJ Fitzgibbons.
Heat wins were awarded to Butch Klinger and Denny Smith.
Dan Howe picked up his first win of the season in the fifteen lap Pure
Stock feature event and Dave Jaindl won the fifteen lap 4 Cylinder Stock
feature.
