1ST WIN OF SEASON FOR MARK SCHOONOVER
Afton, NY…8/14/98...Craftsman Tools and Quality Hardwoods, presented a full night of
NASCAR Winston Racing Series action on Friday August 14th. Mark Schoonover,
Aaron Excell, Denny Smith, Dan Howe and Dennis Vroman collected wins on the
night.
JR Hurlburt and Steve Eldred brought the field to the start of the 30-lap
NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modified feature event. Hurlburt would jump out
and lead the first three circuits until Mark Schoonover would take over the
top spot. Caution appeared on lap four, as Jerry Northrup came to a rest in
turn two. On the restart, five cars come together in turn four keeping the
yellow on the speedway.
Schoonover who started in position number four opened up a six-car length
advantage as the field hit the lap ten mark. Mike Clapperton and Paul Jensen
were now pressuring Hurlburt, who was in second. Clappeton's fine run would
come to an end on lap thirteen as he came to a stop in turn one.
On the restart, Jensen was able to grab second from JR Hurlburt. Jensen set
sail after the race leader Schoonover. At the midway point, Schoonover leads
by seven car lengths over Paul Jensen in second. JR Hurlburt, Mitch Gibbs and
Earl Walrath complete the top five.
Brian Weaver was now making a run to the front as he was in a borrowed car as
he lost a motor the previous week. Weaver was now in sixth and challenging
Walrath for the fifth spot as the field completed, lap twenty. Weaver took
the fifth spot away from Walrath on lap twenty-two and was now looking for
fourth around JR Hurlburt. Up front, Paul Jensen was slowly reeling in
Schoonover to challenge for the lead.
Schoonover who has had his share of motor problems in the 1998 season, was on
rails and was looking to collect his first win of the season. By lap twenty-
five, Jensen pulled to within three car lengths of the leader as they started
to encounter slower traffic on the speedway. This was to be Mark Schoonover's
night, as Jensen could not get any closer than three car lengths as the laps
ticked down.
At the checkers, Mark Schoonover collected his first win of the season. Paul
Jensen had to settle for second, Mitch Gibbs, JR Hurlburt and Brian Weaver
completed the top five. Heat wins on the night went to John Kollar, Mike
Clapperton and Mark Schoonover.
Tim Ross took the early lead of the 20-lap NASCAR Winston Racing Shortrack
Series Sportsman feature event. Ross would lead the first six laps before
Bill Walters was able to get by. Walters stay at the front would be short
lived as Aaron Excell took command of the race. Excell would open up a quick
seven-car lead that would never be relinquished.
Excell would go on to collect the win his second of the season in the
Sportsman ranks. Bill Walters crossed in second followed by Tim Ross, Steve
Anderson and Wink Hinkley. Heat wins went to Tim Ross and Arnie Slade.
Denny Smith collected his fifth win of the season in the Street Stock
division. Bill Harris was the first car across the line with Smith finishing
second in the 15-lap feature event. Harris's car failed a post race
inspection giving the win to Smith. Skip French was second, Butch Klinger, TJ
Fitzgibbons and John Walker completed the top five. Heat wins went to Bill
Harris and Denny Smith.

feature event. Bill Cook was second, followed by Denny Decker, Neil Palladino
and Rob Facini. Heat wins were awarded to Dan Howe and Todd Hurlburt.
