Jack Johnson Finishes 1 and 2 At Albany-Saratoga Speedway

MALTA - It’s only early June, but Jack Johnson is already showing that old
Jumpin’ Jack midsummer form. Johnson, the winningest driver in the history
of Albany-Saratoga Speedway, had one of his best nights at the Malta track
in a long time Friday night, picking up a victory and a second-place finish
in the double modified features. Johnson finished second in the first
35-lap feature, which had been carried over because of a rainout the
previous week, and then charged from the rear of the pack to record his 80th
career victory in the second feature.
The only thing that prevented Jumpin’ Jack from getting the sweep was
Jim Ryan, who clung to his first-row starting position for dear life and
came away with his first career win at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in the first
feature. A multi-car tangle in the fourth lap of the first feature took out
many of the top contenders, including Brett Hearn in the Brioschi-sponsored
small block, Don Scarborough and Gene Munger, who went into the night with
the point lead. Ryan finished with a comfortable 2.9 second margin of
victory over Johnson in the first feature, which carried double points.
Following Johnson across the finish line were Tim Laduc, Mike Ronca and Jack
Cottrell.
Johnson blew away the field in the second feature, finishing with a
half-a-track lead over Don Scarborough, Cottrell had another good run,
finishing third while Dave Camara was fourth and became the new point
leader. Don Ackner ended his short retirement and finish fifth.
Ken Tremont Jr. had another rough night. Back behind the wheel of his
regular Friday night ride, the No. 21 owned by his cousin Dennis, Tremont
was the last car on the lead lap of the first feature, finishing13th. Engine
problems in the No. 21 forced him to borrow a ride in the small block owned
by Sput Shaw for the second event, in which he finished sixth. Hearn’s night
was done after the wreck in the first feature, as he didn’t even start the
second.
Tony Ballestero held off Frank Hoard Jr. to win the 20-lap Spring
Championships sportsman feature. Ballestero became the sixth different
winner in as many races in the sportsman division.
Also winning a carried over feature was John Morris Jr., who triumphed
in the hobby division feature.
Steve Burega ended his run of bad luck with his first win of the year in
the regular 20-lap pro-street stock feature. Fred Little chased Burega to
the end, but had to settle for second, with Mike Paquin third.
Ryan Odasz, who hasn’t been a regulat at the speedway for a couple of
years, picked up his career victort in th regular sportsman feature.
Ballestero put on a hard charge to finish second, with Hoard third.
Ken Towne won the hobby division feature, while Jim Monroe
(four-cylinder) and W. Jon Smith (six-cylinder) won the cruiser features.
The Empire Super Sprints will make their first appearance of the season
at Albany-Saratoga Speedway on Friday night, joining an action pack card of
CVRA modifieds, sportsman and hobby stocks.
