A DISQUALIFICATION FOR ALAIN BOISVERT AND THE TITLE FOR STEVE POIRIER
Granby, Qc., September 2, 2003—For the second time this season, Alain Boisvert didn’t get through the technical inspection with success and was disqualified. With a second place finish in the 40-lap feature in the Modified division Steve Poirier clinched the Carquest Auto parts title, last Monday at Autodrome Granby.
Boisvert who also won the last race of the season in 2002, took the lead on lap 7 and led till the finish resisting to two restarts with Poirier on his side door. Unfortunatly, at the technical inspection before going to the winner’s circle, Boisvert’s car was found illegal due to an underweight situation. From there, he went directly to his pits. Boivert had taken the lead when Mario Clair was forced to pit due to mechanical problems on lap 6.
As far as Poirier and Brouillard are concerned, they had a very good race. The new track champion was able to move upfront faster. Twelfth on the starting grid, he was fourth by lap 14 and second at the mid-race. Brouillard was slower in his ascension. Ninth at the start, he was able to get by Kayle Robidoux for the third spot with only five laps to go.
In this Carquest Auto Parts championship which was challenged till the very end, Poirier finished the season with 1189 points, 36 more than Brouillard.
In the Sportsman division, Jean Boissonneault achieved his goal with a fourth place finish in this 25-lap feature. Yannick Ledoux made it to the winner’s circle for the fourth time this season. He had the best on Sébastien Gougeon and Steve Bernard who is assured of the rookie of year honors.
By finishing second compared to a fifth place for François Becksted, Gougeon ended this season in second place with only a one-point margin.
On the last lap
In the Semi-Pro division, Normand Voghell to the lead over Alain Brochu on the very last lap to depriving Alain Brochu of a win before being crowned champion. Denis Tremblay was third.
A very exciting feature race in the 4 Cylinders class between the Bernier’s brother, Steve and François. Before the race, François was leading by only four points. Steve took the lead on lap 2 while his brother was able to move up in his rear bumper by lap 13. Two late restarts, in the 15-lap feature, kept the crowd on their feet and Steve crossed the finish line in first place to score a perfect night and clinch the track championship by only a one point margin.
$5,000 to win
The championships are over at Autodrome Granby, but there is still a big weekend ahead. Next Saturday, part of a doubleheader called “Festival du stock-car”, there will be a 200 lap Enduro for the Semi-Pro division and the second edition of the Leveillé 100 for the Sportsman drivers.
Then on Sunday, after time trials, a 100-lap feature is scheduled for the Modified division with a $5,000 dollars cheque to the winner. Also, there will be a 50-lap feature for the 4 Cylinders class.
