DECKER CONTINUES HIS WINNING WAYS AT BREWERTON
BREWERTON, NY.....Billy Decker continues to peak at the right time of the season. Leading the DIRT Modified point standings coming into Friday night's Jasper Engines racing program at Brewerton Speedway, Decker continued to build momentum by scoring another feature win in the 35-lapper at the "D-Shaped DIRT Demon." Sean Lias found victory lane once again in the IMCA Modifieds, Troy Van Allen continued his dominance in the Dwarf cars, and Lloyd Hinton returned after a few week's absence to return to victory lane in the 4 Cylinders.
A standing room only crowd saw Tim McCreadie jump into the early lead in the DIRT Modified feature event, with Pat Ward moving past Mike Hulsizer and Scott Prentice to challenge 'Leadfoot' for the top spot by lap 5. Decker was moving up from his 17th starting position and charging through the pack quickly. Prentice encountered problems on lap 6 and fell out of contention as McCreadie and Ward held a spirited battle for the lead.
On lap 13, Ward made the pass to take the lead with Decker following through to take over the second spot. Two laps later Decker moved into the lead and Ward battled McCreadie for the runner-up spot as Alan Johnson moved into the top five. In the closing laps of the feature, Alan moved in behind ward and grabbed second with six laps to go. Decker had the field covered as he took the checkers with Johnson behind in the runner-up spot. Ward came home third followed by McCreadie and Danny Johnson, who came up from the 20th starting spot. DIRT Modified heats were won by Ward, McCreadie, and Decker.
The 20-lap IMCA Modified feature event saw Don Alvord charge into the lead at the start of the race, with Sean Lias and Rob Keller moving up quickly. Lias grabbed second spot on lap 4 and began to put pressure on Alvord as Keller took third from Bill Klinkowsky. John Bell moved into fourth at the halfway point and joined the battle amongst the leaders.
At the lap 10 mark, Lias made the pass on Alvord to jump into the lead. Bell worked his way past Keller and camped out on Lias' back bumper for the remainder of the feature event. In a spirited battle right down to the finish, Lias held off repeated attempts by Bell to steal the lead and recorded the feature win. Bell was right behind Lias at the checkers with Keller close behind them in third. Dick Weiland and Cory Fachini rounded out the top five finishers. IMCA Modified heats were won by Alvord, Keller, and Bell.
The 20-lap Dwarf car feature began with Kevin Battelle and DJ Forbes swapping the lead back and forth while multi-time feature winners Tony Buffa and Troy Van Allen swept from mid pack into the top five. Buffa took the lead from Battelle on lap 5 and pulled away, with Van Allen moving into second one lap later.
As Battelle settled into a solid third position, Van Allen used an inside move in turn one to grab the lead from Buffa. Van Allen built up his margin after getting the lead on lap 8, negociating lapped traffic smoothly as the race progressed to the finish without any other yellow flags. At the line, Van Allen had a commanding lead over Buffa, with Battelle all by himself in the third spot. Ken Gamlen made a hard charge from 19th spot to fourth at the finish, with Dan Boyce also making a strong run from deep in the field to take fifth. Dwarf car heats were won by Battelle, Forbes, and Scott Nash. Gamlen was the winner of the Dwarf 'B' Main.
The 15-lap 4 Cylinder feature saw John Clark lead from his pole position and hold off Brett Hubbard and Bob Whipple in the early going. Lloyd Hinton started 14th and rapidly advanced up to the second spot on lap 4. Hinton's car was working very well on the tacky surface as he battled with Whipple for the lead while Clark fell back to the third spot. At lap 8, Hinton had taken over the lead and held on to the finish to record the win after being absent from competition for nearly a month. Whipple had his best finish of the year with a second, followed by Harvey Calkins Jr., Doug Battles, and Jim Olin. 4 Cylinder heats were won by Calkins, Hinton, and Roger West.
This Friday night, motorcycle stuntman Sky Lungston brings his exciting show to Brewerton along with a full program of racing for the "Fabulous Four" divisons. Gates will open at 5:30pm and racing starts at 7:30pm.
