PLANCK BECOMES FOURTH DIFFERENT MODIFIED WINNER AT BREWERTON
BREWERTON, NY.....Dale Planck became the fourth different winner in four events so far in 1999 at Brewerton Speedway, capturing the win Friday night at the "D-Shaped DIRT Demon". Sean Lias and Tony Buffa took their third wins of the year in the IMCA Modifieds and Dwarf cars respectively, while Lloyd Hinton won his second consecutive feature in the 4 Cylinder division.
Chuck Hebing shot into the lead early in the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature event and pulled away from Jeremy Corcoran and Tim McCreadie, who were fighting for second and third. A few laps into the feature event, Scott Prentice and Danny Johnson hooked together and tagged Bob McCreadie, bringing out a yellow flag. Prentice was forced to retire with front-end damage, while Johnson and McCreadie were able to continue, with McCreadie making a stop in the pits before rejoining the field.
When the green flag flew again, Hebing again jumped into the lead, while Chuck Bower moved up to challenge Tim McCreadie for position. Dale Planck had also moved into contention, getting into second spot by the halfway point. From the rear, Danny Johnson and Bob McCreadie made tremendous charges through the field to advance into the top ten. Planck caught Hebing as the laps began to wind down and the lead pack entered lapped traffic. As Tim McCreadie faded back through the field, Billy Decker advanced past Bower to move into third and began to catch the leaders.
In traffic, Planck got alongside Hebing, and after a couple of thrilling side by side laps, passed him on the inside in turn one. Decker also slipped by Hebing a couple of laps later. Decker ran down Planck, but could not get past him as Planck recorded his first ever big block DIRT Modified win. Bob McCreadie's dramatic outside line charge brought him to third at the checkers, followed by Hebing and Danny Johnson. Modified heats were won by Jeremie Corcoran, Jimmy Phelps, and Dale Planck.
Bill Klinkowsky took the early lead in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature event, but spun in front of the entire field a few laps in. Everyone avoided the spinning Klinkowsky, who restarted in the rear of the field. Sean Lias moved up to challenge Bob Bradt and Dick Weiland for the lead by lap 8 as Tim Murphy joined the race for the lead.
Lias took the lead just before the halfway point and stretched it out over the second half of the race to record the win, his third of 1999 at Brewerton. Bradt was second, followed by Weiland, Murphy, and Les Hubbard. IMCA Modified heat wins went to Klinkowsky and John Bell.
Shawn Hort grabbed the lead at the start of the 20-lap Dwarf car feature, trailed by Ken Gamlen, Kevin Battelle, and last week's winner Troy Van Allen. While that quartet diced for the lead, Tony Buffa, who started near the back after an ignition problem in his heat race, was picking off spots every lap. Gamlen took the lead at lap 6, only to lose it to teammate Van Allen two laps later. By the time the first yellow flew on lap 10, Buffa had cracked the top five.
After a quick spin forced a lap 11 restart, Van Allen pulled away while Buffa took off past Gamlen and moved into third. On lap 14, Van Allen slowed on the backstretch and fell out of the event, while Buffa was passing Battelle for second. That turned out to be the winning pass and Buffa stretched out his advantage to get the win over Battelle, Gamlen, Tom Juhl, and Pat Pontello. Dwarf car heats were won by Gamlen, Van Allen, and Dan Boyce.
Russ Cusson took the lead as the green dropped on the 15-lap 4 Cylinder feature, but the yellow flew just as quickly as Harvey Calkins Jr. and Roger Olchewske tangled on the frontstretch. Roger's car made hard contact with the frontstretch wall while Calkins was able to continue. When the green flew again, Lloyd Hinton moved into the second spot and began pressuring Cusson for the lead. Calkins was charging from the rear while Chuck Powelczyk moved into the lead battle as well.
On lap 7, Hinton moved past Cusson and pulled away to take the checkered flag for the second consecutive week. Powelczyk brought home the second spot while Calkins charged back to third at the end of the race. John Clark and Roger West rounded out the top five. 4 Cylinder heats went to Hinton, Cusson, and Powelczyk.
Women on Wheels winners were Lori Sponnable in the IMCA Modifieds, Pat Fourney in the Dwarf cars, and Amber Hines in the 4 Cylinders.
Next Friday night, a Rollover contest will join a regular show of DIRT Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, Dwarf cars, and 4 Cylinders. Gates open at 5:30pm with racing starting at 7:30pm.
