BACK ON TRACK, PAUCH BEATS WEATHER & HORTON BY INCHES
BRIDGEPORT, NJ (May 6, 2005) – During the last Friday night event at the Bridgeport Speedway, Billy Pauch’s #1 was towed off the backstretch of the speedway with mechanical problems. This week’s feature event would prove to be no different-- except this time Pauch would be towed out of Victory Lane.
“The Kid” grabbed the lead from pole sitter Jimmy Chester on the initial start. As Pauch, Chester and Kevin Hirthler battled up front. “The Ringoes Rocket” Ryan Godown blasted the Burkett Racing #27kc from 9th into 4th on the second time around. The real battle was in the middle of the pack: Jimmy Horton in the Grosso Trucking #42 and Wade Hendrickson in the Atlantic Wood Floors #2w battled Chester and Godown in three and four wide action. A lap nine yellow for the spinning Richie Pratt followed just two laps later for a caution involving Kevin Hirthler moved Jimmy Horton to second and setup the battle of the night. “The Kid” and Horton ricocheted from the top to the bottom of the speedway, cranking their cars into the corners. A late race incident set up a three lap shootout leaving the leaders stranded with "hotshoes" Ryan Godown and G.R. Smith right on their heels. Godown, making his move on the restart, stuck two wheels under the #42 of Horton; the All-Time Feature Winner shrugged off this valiant attempt and set his sights on the #1 spot. Pauch, all by himself, took the white flag while a relentless Horton rocketed out of turn two, almost breathing on Pauch’s bumper. Enormous amounts of smoked billowed from the Team 1 Racing Bicknell entering three; the two shuffled through turn four as Pauch’s motor expired on the exit allowing Horton to move to the outside of the speedway. The two crossed the line side-by-side with Pauch gaining the win by mere inches. Godown settled for third with G.R. Smith and Richie Pratt wrapping up the top five.
A behind-the-scenes battle between the “JD3Graphics Young Guns” and “The Outlaws” was played out on the speedway in the GM Crate Sportsman feature. In a borrowed ride, Eric Korman, fought with, Young Gun, Jimmy Horton IV side-by-side for fifteen straight laps both demanding the top spot. Horton, in his sophomore season, looped his #43 Teo entering turn three taking himself out of contention. Korman convincingly grabbed the victory with John Pratt, Mike Fattori, Todd Kuhl, and John Micek following at the line.
Andrew Weygand led the early stages of the 600cc Micro Sprint feature until Rick Steif and Phil Meisner Jr. made their move on lap 13. Steif and Meisner battled in and through lapped traffic. Steif grabbed the win and Meisner settled for second with Davey Sammons, Glenn Heveron, and Andrew Weygand following the top two.
Don Matney dominated the 270cc Micro Sprint feature leading flag to flag following at the line was Jimmy Cammock, Jeff Hartman, Ross Robinson and John Blanda.
It was family first in the 4 cylinder stock feature as Mike Hughes defended the first place spot against the Father-and-Son teams of Dave Bentley Sr. and Dave Bentley Jr. and Gary and Jeff Walls. Hughes grabbed the win with Bentley Jr. grabbing second followed by Jeff and Gary Walls and Dave Bentley Sr.
