HOWARD HOT IN BRIDGEPORT MODIFIED THRILLER
BRIDGEPORT, NJ (April 16, 2005) – Defending Big Block Modified Champion, Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., completely dominated the 25 lap feature event, this past Saturday Night, collecting his 20th career feature win at the 5/8 mile dirt oval.
“These Dirt Wheels Race Cars really get it done here,” Howard boasted of the chassis manufacturer that has claimed all three Modified features held so far this season. “This is a good win. What a great way to start of the season.”
Wade Hendrickson, who through the luck of the draw grabbed the pole position for the 25 lap main event, immediately began to put on a show with Bob Sarkisian and Kyle Strickler following close behind. In a lap one altercation Kevin Hirthler’s #117 violently rolled up and over the machine of Jamie Mills, both men walked away unscathed. On the restart, Howard was a man on a mission, outsmarting Wade Hendrickson and grabbing the lead, as Sarkisian and Strickler battled for third. Two laps later, Strickler performed a complete 360 degree spin in the Fanslau Motorsports #125, he continued but a massive seven car pile up ensued ending the nights of Kenny Brightbill, Jimmy Chester, Fritz Epright and Don Barone. The final restart of the night saw Howard maintaining the advantage and grabbing the victory with Wade Hendrickson, Doug Hoffman, Rick Laubach and Ricky Elliott chasing.
It was an equally dramatic Sportsman event as Richie Pratt, Jr. battled side-by-side with Riegelsville, Pa’s John Pursell. On Lap 8, Pratt grabbed the lead coming out of turn four only to be ambushed by a lap car that sent the All-Time Sportsman Feature Winner into the guardrail and upside down ending his night. Pursell dominated and picked up the win with Sam Wescott, Bob Lineman, Jr., Ron Roberts and Jim Dallett rounding out the top five.
After rebounding from a flat tire to finish second last week, Laurel De’s Chad James picked up his first victory in the GM Crate Rookie Sportsman Division. The J&J Shop #27jr. held off Pat Hires, Jeff Walls, Tracy Rocap, and Forrest Peters.
Pat Conaway’s #US2 blitzed the field of the Outlaw Stock feature besting Gary Klimeczak, Jim Honaker, Tommy Alley and Ken Watson.
As the theme of the night, Pastors from five different assemblies gathered to participate in the “Faster Pastor Challenge,” with Mike Zito, from Pemberton’s First Baptist Church capturing the overall victory.
In the first of many Young Gun/Top Gun match races, twenty-one year old, Kyle Strickler stole the $700 reward, defeating his idol and mentor, Kenny Brightbill, in a dramatic one lap “Dash for Cash.” Sponsors such as Tabloid Graphics and Strickler Excavating donated to the purse which started out at $200.
